Consensus pick: Rockets in 7
Magicman pick: Thunder in 7
One team built from retooling not once but twice and Sam Presti did it wisely. He got SGA and picks, he acquired Chris Paul and picks. He has the 3 guard lineup (SGA, Schroder, CP3) I call the Ghidorah offense. Ironically, Ghidorah has an ability called ‘Thunder spark’.
Normally an offense with James Harden, specifically guard matchups, should give Rockets the edge. Not here, not right now. Russ is hurt, Gordon is not healthy.
Robert Covington is the key to the whole car running. He’s played well defensively, but his shot is well…SHOT! If he can’t hit the 3 on a consistent level especially if he’s bringing Steven Adams out of the paint trying to draw more space for Harden…he needs to hit deep shots, if he doesn’t, his effectiveness plummets because Adams gobbles up defensive boards.
Houston’s makeshift bench needs a shot in the arm. Gallo, Terrence Ferguson, Andre Roberson, can make a difference in tight games. Gallo is a particularly bad matchup for Houston. He can play a cutter/shooter/screener in the Ghidorah offense and Adams is a problem anytime he’s on the floor.
Rockets may be able to pull away, if CP3 and SGA and DS all struggle at the same time. Over a 7 game series, this is unlikely and I see as improbable.
Thunder in 7.
