Under new CBA rules, teams are now allowed to negotiate with their own players beginning today.
Upcoming free agents or extension-eligible players can agree to deals now instead of waiting until the new league year in a few weeks.

I would like to see the Lakers negotiate a new contract with DLO. Maybe less money for more years. Cannot lose him for nothing to free agency. JJ should want to keep him. DLO w/b hard to replace.

How many more times do we need to see D.Russell play well in the regular season then stink it up in the playoffs? If he walks straight into Orlando’s cap space that’ll be a final F.U. to us.

Better to re-sign him and then trade him at the deadline. Otherwise, we lose him for nothing to free agency. Be very interested to see what JJ’s input on DLO w/b. Will tell us a lot about his priorities as head coach.
Orlando is likely to go after Klay Thompson before DLO and they supposedly do not want to pay more than he is making now. So there could be possibility of a S&T with Orlando. Jonathan Isaac makes $17.4M which is not guaranteed.
I’d love to trade DLO for Isaac. That could be a win-win for both teams. Isaac w/b great fit and can play 3/4/5 and stretch the court. Get CLO on a 1-year deal w/b better than letting him walk.

But don’t try to make it seem like we are in control of this situation. It’s more up to D.Russell than anyone else. ORL would be foolish to throw a buncha money at broken-down Klay.

It’s really the market that will determine what DLO does. The Lakers have two choices.
First is to do nothing and hope the market is so bad that DLO wants to lock up that $18M PO.
Second, is to negotiate with him and reach an agreement on maybe him opting in and getting a 2-year extension for $40M total.
Then we have a tradable asset at the deadline and don’t lose DLO for nada. And maybe just maybe JJ Redick can help him solve his playoff issues. Who knows. Hard to replace the vol 3-pt shooting and playmaking he provides.
We can control situation and get better outcome, even if it’s just a midseason trade.

Magic might be smarter to go after Klay than DLO. They want player for playoffs as well as regular season.

I’m just not sure he wants to go through 3/4 of the season languishing on the trading block once again. He’s admitted that it took a toll on him.
