Help me understand how Nets can trade for Harden and their total salary is at $165 Mil, GS is at $174 Mil and Lakers are at $138 Mil. Why couldn’t we have traded for Harden (not that we needed him)? Seems like several teams can spend whatever and we cannot.

Some teams have Monopoly money :). I’m willing to bet it’s just as good an explanation as the real thing :))

Trade exception allows teams to receive salaries up to 125% of what they send out + $100K even if over cap.

John’s right. It definitely can be. A luxury taxpayer $20 million over the cap could send out $25 million in salary to legally acquire a player making $30 million, ending up adding another $5 million more over the cap.
