Rob better be on the phone with Dlo right now. He has a 38 mil cap hold so his situation needs to resolved right away. Can’t do much until it is.

Aloha,
There is one new addition to the CBA that no one is talking about. Teams are going to be required to spend 90% of their cap space by the beginning of the season. This could mean there rebuilding teams are going to have to add at least a few veterans. This could mean more competition for decent free agent role players.

Aloha,
With only a day to go, there hasn’t been a peep about the Lakers plans for Mo and Beasley. Will they pick them up, waive or trade them? It’s just a little weird that there isn’t anything being said.

Aloha,
The Hawks just traded John Collins to the Jazz for Rudy Gay and a 2nd round pick. A clear salary dump, probably due to the new CBA. This is why I believe the Lakers will keep Beasley and Bamba. That’s 27 mil in expiring contracts. And while Beasley flamed out with us, over all he has been solid and should have some trade value. The new CBA will change the way teams view roster building.

ESPN Sources: The Hawks are finalizing a trade to send F/C John Collins to the Jazz for Rudy Gay and a future second-round pick. Atlanta’s largely unloading Collins’ three years, $78M for some roster building flexibility and alignment with looming changes to salary cap. pic.twitter.com/CpAfTNXKMq

In the podcast I did with LT I brought this exact scenario up. There will now be a legitimate way to acquire prime talent simply by having cap space and decent picks to send out. Utah looking to cut the “rebuild” short and vault back into contention in one short season. Honestly, had it not been for Wemby, they might have knocked on the playin door more seriously. San Antonio will be the other team along with maybe OKC to watch regarding this tactic. Instant flexibility will be very useful for the next 7 years, mark my words.

Aloha,
With the draft over, the next date that looms large is the 29th. This is the day that the Lakers have to decide what they are going to do wit Bamba and Beasley. I thought that there might be trades made during the draft. And of course there still could be. If I were one of our new rookies I would sign an apartment lease just yet.
Both Beasley and Mo could be waived. It’s a shame that this comes before the free agent period. The Lakers could at least get a feel for what free agents they could bring into the cap space. And I am SURE Rob isn’t talking to free agents reps. That’s not allowed in the NBA. Lol.
If Mo and Beasley were kept. That’s 27mil that could be used in trades. While Beasley could never get it going for the Lakers, I still see him as a good trade chip for a team that is in need of shooting. He has been solid before this last season and he is still only 26. Mo on the other had has never lived up to expectations and at 10.5 mil is over paid for what he has shown so far. Mo could be traded before the 29th and waived by the receiving team. So the Lakers have a few days.
If I were to guess I would say it’s 60-40 that they keep them. 26 mil in trade assets are valuable, especially since it’s broken into two contracts. And they need those expiring contracts in any kind of sign and trade deal that may arise. And with our limited cap space we probably could not sign anyone better than Beasley anyway. It’s going to be interesting to see what they do.

Aloha,
Over the last couple of weeks, the Lakers have been rumored to be keeping their pick, trading it for a veteran and trading back in the draft. Which means there are rumors for every possible scenario. In other words, nobody knows. I’m sure Rob and staff hasn’t slept much over the last few days. It will be interesting to see what they decide. At the very least it’s fun to finally have multiple options for a change.

I think it’s all on the table, thus impossible to guess. Lakers and Indy made a deal, just (as always) not the click-bait deal. Lakers moved up a few spots in the 2nd round and showed how the power of cold, hard cash can still be a useful tool in the NBA.
Phoenix is asset-strapped out, now. Golden State is betting on the next 1-3 years, Lakers trying to navigate an interesting path that both maximizes now but also extends the AD window with younger dudes.
Who knows indeed.

The Los Angeles Lakers are acquiring the 40th pick from the Indiana Pacers for No. 47 and cash, sources tell ESPN.While this is a little thing, in this draft it could be a positive move.

Aloha,
I have read that the Pistons are looking for ways to get into the mid first round. It got me thinking about how deep this draft is and how little difference there is between the 17 th pick and early 2nd round. I would consider trading the 17th and Mo for Alec Burks and the 31st pick that the Pistons have. Alec is a 6’ 6” combo guard who is very capable of running the point. He is a career 38% from 3 but has shot over 40% the last 2 years. And we could still find a good player at 31. While we could target Bogdanovic I don’t think we would get their 31 first back.

The Nets have 21 and 22. What would be even better if we could get Royce O’Neil or Finney-Smith and the 22nd. But while the Nets want to move up I don’t know if that’s a big enough jump for them, considering that there is not much difference between 17 and 22 this year. Although they could possibly use Mo, considering they have very little length on the team. They have an abundance of wings. So maybe.

Aloha,
The off season has arrived and of course the rumors and trade scenarios are buzzing around like an annoying swarm of flys. I tune it out except for the occasional realistic Lakers scenarios.
While the Lakers mantra is always championship or bust, I thought we had a very successful season. We had the best record after the trades and made it all the way to the WCF, I consider that a win. I do believe it took a toll on the team playing playoff intensity basketball for 2 months. Still while the Nuggets swept us, every game was a battle and we lost 3 games by 6 points or less.
This is why I do not believe we need a major overhaul. If you look at other playoff contenders around the league, the Lakers have more flexibility than most to make upgrades. This is the under appreciated part of the trades Rob made.
Unless something big materializes I do believe that Austin, Rui and Vando will be back for sure. It gets interesting after that. Our first order of business will be at PG, considering we don’t have one under contract.
This is not a good year for free agent PG’s. DLO is ranked 3rd and Dennis 5th. I will trust the insiders reporting that Kyrie is off the table. That leaves FVV. Of all the big name’s floating around out there, he maybe the only one Rob considers trading for. There are rumblings that a couple of rebuilding teams are looking to make the jump into playoff contenders, the Rockets being the most likely. FVV is a Klutch client and could say he wants to go to the Lakers or he will walk to one of these other teams. We could then arrange a sign and trade with the Raptors for DLO if, big if, Dlo agrees. My only problem with FVV is he worth the money he will be looking for. He is solid and an upgrade over Dlo but I’m not sure he is worth 30+ mil that he is looking for. I would rather keep Dlo and I believe they will. We don’t make the playoffs without DLO. He had a terrible Nugget series but then Jaylen Brown shot 16% fro 3 and had 25 turnovers to 24 assists against the Heat and he was all NBA. Shit happens.
There is a lot of noise around CP3 but it’s looking like it may not be as simple as the Suns cutting him so we will see. I did hear on a pod cast that If they do waive him any contract he signs reduces the amount the Suns have to pay him. That doesn’t sound right to me but if true there isn’t a real advantage to signing say a MLE, at least in the first year. The Lakers will have to make a decision quickly because DLO has a 38mil cap hold that makes it hard for the Lakers to do anything until that’s resolved.
After the PG issue I see depth as the primary goal. After Rui’s playoff run I think Vando comes off the bench. So we him and Max for sure off the bench. After Austin went to the starting unit our 2nd unit offense fell off. We will need a scorer, along with a PG. I would love to keep Lonnie. We won’t find a better scorer in his price range in free agency. We also need to find a back up center that can go 15 minutes to help AD and another combo forward for LeBron.
It will be interesting to see what they do with Beasley. I was a fan but he fell apart with the Lakers. But he has had a solid career and maybe a valuable trade chip for a team looking for shooting. Mo could be also used and could be waived in after a draft day trade. If they can’t find a trade I’m not sure what the Lakers will do. Do you let them walk? I don’t think so unless something unexpected comes up. As we saw last year, trade chips are nice to have.
As for the draft. This will be the first one for a while that will be interesting for me. Just looking at who they are working out and what is being reported, it seems like the Lakers are either looking at moving back in the draft or may have a trade on the table involving the 17 th pick. This is a very deep draft and if you look at the scouting reports, there isn’t much difference between 17 and the Pacers picks at 26 and 29. The Lakers have been working out, primarily older players that could be plugged into a rotation. There are quite a few of those guys in this years draft. I think that may be due to losing playing time to the pandemic. Probably won’t see this many quality upper class men again. With 3 two way contracts available and our great scouting department, it could be a big year for undrafted players.
With so may options available this could be a fun off season. Rob pulled off a great deadline but he hasn’t won me over yet. He has made too many bonehead moves in the past. Let’s see if he can follow up the trade deadline with a great summer.

Two teams are now out of the D-Lo list: Washington and Phoenix, more likely to come. Ironically D-Lo and Kyrie are in mirroring situations in that there will likely not be a long list of teams pining for their services. If teams like GS, Milwaukee and other contenders value continuity over adjustments the list shrinks even more. Free agency gonna be wacky.

Aloha,
I saw the list of rookies that the Lakers worked out today. And like before there wasn’t a name that projected to be in the Lakers range. So far most of the guys they have worked out seems to be 2nd round at best guys and undrafted guys that they will look at for two way deals. I only recall two players so far that are considered 1st round picks. It makes you wonder if they are planning on trading that pick or perhaps the name players will be coming in this last week before the draft.

Aloha,
There are only a couple of guys this year considered potential franchise players. But this draft considered extremely deep with good players. And the mock drafts reflect this. I can not recall a year where there was so little consensus beyond the first 7 or 8 guys.
I have seen Colby Buftkin coming to us. I have also seen him in the low teens and 20’s. A new mock is out today that had him at 8. I’ve seen Jett Howard coming to us and also a late lottery pick. And I’ve seen him at 30. A new mock has Lively coming to us. I have also seen him at 10, 12, 19 and 22.
If there was ever a year to trade back in the draft, this might be the year. There doesn’t seem to be much difference between drafting at 17 or 26. There are many players in the 2nd round that also show up in the first round.
We can now offer 2nd round players and undrafted player a 3rd year even if we are over the cap. Too bad that wasn’t in place for Austin. This could also be a year where some hidden gems go undrafted. The CBA gives teams 3 two way players now which is great for the Lakers because of our excellent scouting department.

Older I get, the less I pay much attention to the pre-draft talk. Everybody (agents, GMs, etc) is lying to the media to further their own agenda who in turn eats it up cuz they need content to fill the news cycle. And now with so many dudes coming from the experimental cocoons of G-League Ignite & Overtime Elite we really haven’t seen guys play in a traditional environment. And add that to the influx of foreign-born players. We as fans are just relying on highlight reels and hearsay…we don’t see these guys play in actual complete games like in the past.
So once we sift through all the lies & disinformation we end up with some poor kid still sitting in the green room 3hrs later and wondering what happened.
Yeah…I’m cynical..lol

OKC and the Nuggets made a very interesting trade. The Nuggets sent their protected 2029 1st round pick to OKC for the 37th pick this year plus the least favorable of OKC’s 4 first round picks and another 2nd next year. It makes sense for both teams. OKC has more draft picks than they can possibly use, s they are looking down the road. While the Nuggets are looking to add some cost controlled depth to their roster. I wonder if the Lakers would consider a move like that.
-
It’s a possibility if the Lakers have identified somebody they don’t want to use #17 to get but would be gone by #47.
I think it’s more likely that the Lakers keep and use the pick for a potential star player at either center or small forward. Really Lively or one of the dozen rare 3&D wing prospects this draft has. They know this is a rare opportunity to get a player they normally would never have a shot at. In the end, I think that’s the goal…unless the player(s) are gone by #17.
There’s also a chance they may trade the pick to get a player they want like Turner. That’s probably the only player I’d trade #17 for right now. Of course, that could change after #16 is picked.
-
Nuggs are in a much different position from where we sit. Their top 4 guys are locked down for multiple years and all under 30. Their window is open right now and probably for another 5 years at least so they wanna bring in those young, cheap role players immediately to build out the roster. The future is now.
Our best guy will be done in 2 years and who knows how many games is sidekick will show up for each season. Don’t trade away the future trying to prolong this thing. When you’re in the rebuilding process you need to bring in as many bodies as possible to sift through the inevitable duds.
-
The most remarkable stat from these playoffs is that Murray and Jokic now rank as the two players with the greatest increase in ppg from regular season to playoffs in NBA history.
Playoff Murray and Playoff Joker were #1 and #2 in upping their points in the playoffs. And Lakers could have beaten them if Russell had not tanked with his worst 4 games ever.
-
While some decent games from DLO certainly would have made a difference it wasn’t just him. AD was every other game AD as he went 10 for 30 in two of the losses. LeBron was 3 for 19 from 3 in 3 of the losses and Dennis average 5 points in 3 of the losses. And with the exception of Rui we got very little production from our 2nd unit. You have to give the Nuggets some credit but there were also a lot of missed shots that guys normally make, that was especially true with AD. He missed a lot of bunnies. Come to think of it LeBron missed more layups then I have ever seen him miss. Honestly, like Kareem mentioned, they looked gassed after having to play playoff intensity basketball for months. Adding depth this summer will be key.
-
Hi, Michael. I am in complete agreement with your analysis. But what I would like to add is that even though I get frustrated with AD’s uneven production from game to game I have come to realize that it is hard to engage 100% on defense and be 100% effective on offense in terms of energy. Defense requires more energy than offense.
AD has been a catalyst on defense throughout the playoffs. But to carry that same amount of energy from defense over to offense on a nightly basis requires determination and extraordinary strength. Not that it is undoable but it is extremely hard to sustain. Take for example AD is a very good free throw shooter but he misses more free throws at the end of the game than at the start. That is because he is gassed. Besides, a player expends more energy on defense than on offense. Others would argue that we don’t feature him on our offense in the second halves of games. I will not disagree with that but there were nights when he scores just 4 points in the first half.
So naturally he would not have the energy offensively occasionally but still very stout on defense. That same lack of energy is what we see in LeBron’s tendency to miss simple layups although some might attribute that to his age. That’s undeniable. The truth is we have been playing playoff basketball from the time we were number 13th seed all the way to number seven. That, in itself, takes a toll on your star players and especially your players with a high usage rate.
