Okay Lakerholics, how many of you want Russ to take the most shots on the team? 9 for 21 with his normal half a dozen missed layups. LeBron wasn’t any better 6 for 18 with 6 turnovers. We can not win when our stars play like that.

And Frank didn’t help. Do we not have any plays? 15 seconds down by one and all we get is a forced 30 ft 3 by Melo. Did Frank not think that the Clips wouldn’t blitz LeBron? It’s the same thing every time. LeBron stands out there and dribbles the clock down and we get a bad shot. Down only one why wasn’t Howard in for a rebound? He dominated the glass all night. Then there was putting Russ on Morris. It was not from a switch, he was ASSIGNED to him and Morris backed him in and shot over him. Why wasn’t LeBron on him?

The only reason we were in the game was because we played good defense and Melo, THT and Dwight had good games.

    Are we doomed? Probably.

    • Very good observations as usual, Michael. What really caught my attention in your post was Russ taking 21 shots. For some reason, I didn’t notice that. I thought he was under control throughout the game though he looked tentative for the most part. His aggressiveness wasn’t there and that may help show why he had no turnovers and his assists going down as well. That shot by Morris over Russ is where we lost the game. He should never be assigned to a good shooter like Morris who also have height advantage. What really got me cringing was why we settled for a forced 30 feet 3 point shot when all we need is a simple basket to win. That was a costly play.

Kudos to Reaves. His hustle play in the second quarter against Reggie Jackson was the play that woke up the team and help turn things around. The Clippers were about to runaway for a blowout win before Reaves brought the energy that the team needs. Any loss to the Clippers is always the most painful. Forget about our 2 losses to OKC earlier in the season where we squander blowout leads.

I would like to add that I was very happy with how Dwight, Reaves, THT and Melo played. Ariza just needs to make his 3s and that’s all am asking for.

The more i think about our current situation, the more concerned I become. I remember the Cav’s last ditch move to try snd win and appease Lebron. We traded Clarkson and Nance to them. After the season, Lebron said thank you very much and gratefully stepped into the cap space that trade created and signed with the Lakers. He has done it every where he has played. there is absolutely no reason he wont do it again. Considering the Cav’s with their talented group of young players and only 43mil on the books in Lebrons free agent season, I’m sure that hasnt gone untoticed. I’m pretty convinced that Lebron will not be signing an extension with us is this summer.

so that is the primary reason I’m very hesitant to make an all out win now play to keep him. first of all I really don’t see us having enough amo to make any win now trades. it will cost us those 2 first round picks if we want to move off Russ. And it’s not going to bring back a star or enough quality role players to matter. And THT without 1sts attached won’t bring a lot back either.

when you think about it, AD will be 33 when the first comes do and 35 when that second 1st rounder comes do. considering the picks and pick swaps we spent to aquire AD it could make the Lakers irrelevant for a decade if Lebron leaves after spending every asset we have left to try and win now.

Some fans might figure we can just sign another superstar in free agency. Thats one of the reasons we are where we are now. we gave up young talent for scared cap space. How do you like the way PG and Kwai have been playing for us. lol. Truth is Shaq and Lebron are the only 2 superstars we have landed in the last 25 years. Most stars come through trades.

i think we have one chance. And that is to win big with what we have going down the stretch. It would be helpful if shocked the world and won it all. unfortunately I can’t see that happening even if we enter the playoffs with everyone healthy.

What i fear is what will probably happen. Lebron will not sign an extension. We will trade away everything we have left, but it won’t be enough and he will be playing for the Cav’s in 23/24. We will have a huge amount of cap space and perhaps we could sign another star, but even that will be hard to convince a ttar to come with such an dysfunctional front office. The stretch run will determine everything.

The stretch run will be Klutch.

    • I can always tell when someone posts from a phone (like I am now) as it’s fraught with weird typos. But I catch the gist of what you’re laying down, Michael. I tend to agree that our current assets aren’t enough to swing a major trade. Something else to consider is how long AD wants to stay here w/o LBJ. Signed for only 1 more after James’ last. Win now needed to be the mentality this last summer when we had a lot more tools to work with. Now, fewer tools and more bloated contracts which are harder to move. Especially when said player is likely to be in a decline of some sort. Hard for me to advocate mortgaging being competitive for the rest of the decade to try and squeeze something else out of LBJ and AD. Davis does not feel like a player who will age well. I love his defense and when he’s engaged and healthy he’s a two way dynamo. It’s just that those circumstances are not the norm. Is AD we’re 100% sure we want to build around is the real question. If so you have to find a dynamic playmaker who also opens the floor with their scoring to maximize the pairing. Nobody plays forever and one would hope the Lakers have already at least scenario

    • It’s always easy to jump aboard a Lakers doomsday train but it’s all just overreaction. Like Moma said, LeBron James loves living in Los Angeles and playing for the Lakers. He’s not going anywhere until his son is drafted in the NBA.

For that reason, the Lakers will make big improvements using Russ’ $47 million expiring contract and the two first round picks and LeBron will sign a two-year extension to remain with the Lakers.

Everything else is just posturing by the Lakers and Klutch to make sure the Lakers end up in good shape whenever LeBron does retire or leave to play his last year with Bronny.

What I do agree with is that LeBron would be in great demand were he to refuse to sign an extension or the Lakers decided to trade him. He may be 37-years old but he’s still a top-5 player.

    • What I find hilarious is the guys who never see the Lakers able to ever make a positive trade are always eager to throw their full opinions behind every crazy doomsday theory that has no basis in reality. The Lakers are not going to trade LeBron James. Get over it and just stop the stupid negative takes.

      • L.M.A.O. Lakers didn’t make any trade, despite all your LMAOing in just about everyone’s face for months and your absurd guarantees. Now, after the first mic put in LeBron’s face had nothing positive to say about his current team you both exalt how he’s going to stay a Laker AND drop trade proposal after trade proposal involving LeBron?! That is the definition of crazy my friend.

Here’s a prediction: it’ll go down exactly like I said last night: sign and trade with a team well-positioned and likely to draft Bronny. As we’ve seen now, Cleveland comes to the top of everyone’s list for a variety of smart, realistic, reasons.

Optimism is lovely and cool, but it’s not something you force feed people, Tom. Either they share it or they don’t. So you can please and thanks stop with the stupid passive aggressive…but super positive…behavior.

    Aloha,

Leave it Chris Paul to get injured on a team with a chance for a ring. They say he could be out a couple of months with that fractured thumb. At his age who knows for sure. I guess this another example of why nothing is ever a lock in sports. If we somehow enter the playoffs healthy, who knows what can happen. As the old saying goes, that’s why you play the games.

    Aloha,

Eric Pincu’s open up an idea that I hadn’t thought of.

LeBron to the Cav’s for Love, Allen and a 1st and 2nd. Note: I would love to include Sexton but he is a restricted free agent and a sign and trade would hard cap us.

    AD to the Raptors for
    Gary Trent Jr,
Anunoby, 2 1st round picks. and small filler

Russ and 2 first to the Pacers for, Brogdon and Buddy.

K Love and 2 firsts for Grant (2 firsts was the asking price)

Our line up would look like this
    PG Brogdon
    SG Trent Jr
    Center Jarret Allen
    SF Anunoby
    PF Grant

    Bench Buddy
    Nunn
    Austin
    THT
    Stanley

(Would love it if we could keep Malik)

Of course we would need a couple of smart Free agent back ups at PF and sF. Perhaps Melo?

Would this team be a serious contender? Perhaps but a lot of the guys are pretty young an may need another year.

Would this team be better then anything we can assemble keeping AD and LeBron? I believe it would.

    Fun with Trades

    • Trades are always fun, Michael.

I would preface this by saying I still think Lakers best move is to keep the Klutch alliance going. It’s a huge competitive advantage that’s not going to go away once LeBron retires. But if we have to trade LeBron and/or AD…

Yeah, I had Sexton, Love, Allen, and 2023 and 2025 firsts for LeBron and THT. But I think there’s even better deals to be if LeBron refuses to do an extension and forces the Lakers to trade him.

The Lakers could basically choose the next NBA champion because there are a half dozen teams who would become immediaete favorites if they could get LeBron for next season. Raptors, Pacers, Knicks comes to mind as well as Clippers, 76ers, Celtics, and Bucks.

One interesting dynamic is there is no better sweetener to get teams to take Russ’ expiring contract than also getting LeBron James for a year.

Finally, there’s the chance Klutch could push for Lakers to trade AD too. Lakers have to be very careful. Don’t let a difference turn into a squabble and then a disaster.

The truth is the Lakers cannot replace what they will lose if they trade LeBron James. No matter how good the deal might be. There is only one LeBron. Starting to think you’re better off without him is a sign you’re losing it.

      • You just can’t stop thinking Lebron is still that guy. He had one good year here when he had a motivated AD still contributing at an All-NBA level and bubkiss outside that. I don’t think anyone’s really racing to deal with the baggage of an aging superstar, much less a contender with either cap space or trade pieces to get him. So can we please dispense with the Klutch unholy union being some big benefit? They’ve got Lebron who’s fading and AD who’s damaged goods. Those two can barely get you a playoff berth together. They’ll push you to make dumb decisions like overpaying for other Klutch clients. Then force trades for other washed up bums as a hail mary to take some of the load of a Lebron who can no longer handle it. Then when these bad moves all come to fruition, they cut bait, blame everyone but themselves, and leave your franchise in shambles. It’s not too late to stop the bleeding. Dump all the Klutch Klowns and spend a couple of years in purgatory instead of a decade or irrelevance.

    • Sorry, but that team isn’t getting past GSW, PHX, or MEM in the west. And if I’m an up & coming young team I ain’t trading away my future for a year with LeBron. Cavs would be much wiser to stay the course..Gilbert has shown he will spend the money to build a contender and keep that young core intact.

You notice that most of these contenders are doing it through the draft and we have no picks. Exception is the Bulls but they made some shrewd moves with undervalued talent.

      We in trouble….

      • i want to make it clear that I am not in favor of trading our stars, that said, I’m even less in favor of our team being left in ruins like everywhere Lebron has left.

        • I’m in favor of all of it. It’s extremely hard to rebuild on the fly. It’s better to cut these dudes loose early rather than too late. Those years between Kobe & LeBron we had the worse record in the entire league.

          Burn it down.

      • Well, if it comes down to it, you’re never going to get value for even a 37-year old LeBron. I mean AD can’t even post a positive net rating when LeBron is on the bench. But there are a half dozen teams who could win a ring with LeBron on their team. So they can get some value. Better than losing him for nothing to free agency.

        • The problem is….what’s left of your team after you trade to get LeBron? Are you still a contender then?? And then where are you after he retires in a year or two? Somebody’s gonna get left holding the bag at some point…

    • No and no and heck no!

    • MH, wouldn’t pay $1 to see any those guys!

      • You must not watch a lot of NBA adJ. Jarret Allen was an all star center this year. Trent Jr and Anunoby are both on their way. Tent Jr is averaging almost 19 a game, in the last 10 he’s scored 30+ 3 times and 42 once. He shooter nearly 40% from 3 and is already considered a lock down defender. Oh and he’s only 23. Anunoby is also a great defender with length and is averaging 18 a game and he’s 24. Brogdon is a very good point, capable of running a contending offense. And we all know about Grant. 20 points a game and another lock down defender. He’s old at 26 lol. Regardless of what the Lakers do they would not be able to put a defense together that’s this good especially with an all world fender who rivals AD as a paint protector. I would definitely pay to see them play.

I don’t think anyone should be surprised by Lebrons recent remarks. He left for Miami when he didn’t think he could win in Cleveland. He went back when they acquired enough assets to win. Left for LA when the Cav’s were in cap hell and now that the Cav’s restocked he’s looking at them and thinking “I can win there”

We are facing a similar situation that the Cav’s faced. We are in cap hell with not a lot of amo left for significant upgrades. Now strange things can happen when it comes to trades. I personally thought that the Trailblazers could have done better than they did. But you can’t count on that. So I’ll leave the trade proposals for Tom and look at what can be done if we can’t find a trade that upgrades the team. I also don’t believe that the buyout market will save the season. There is only a week to go and there have only been a couple of guys bought out. Perhaps a name we can use will pop up but I’m not counting on that.

    1 No panic trades please.
Any trades made should be for a true up grade. Not an aging player with his best years behind him.

    2. We need to live and die with the kids. Malik, Austin, THT and Stanley play with the energy required to win. They all have shown great upside moments throughout the season. It’s time to give them a lot of run and see if they can find consistency. Over the last couple of games, Austin, THT and Malik were all tutored after making mistakes but they were also the reason we were in those games. Playing them more wont hurt our chances of winning a ring. That’s already unlikely. But they can develop into a quality supporting cast for next year or improve their trade value. Either way, it’s a win.

    3. One huge thing in our favor next year is the cap situation around the league. There just will not be a lot of money available for free agents. For instance there are only 7 teams with projected cap space to sign Malik to a full MLE and only a couple of teams that could go over the MLE. And he may not be a good fit for some of them. While unlikely, we still might be able to keep him. That’s why it’s important to start him the rest of the year. If offered the full MLE of 9.5 mil to come off the bench somewhere or the mini MLE of 6.1 mil to start for the Lakers would he take less to stay like Bobby Portis did with the Bucks? We have plenty of cap space in 2023 so it would be something for him to think about.

    4. With so little cap space available there will be talent that trickles down to the Vet minimum pay grade. Can we please try and find a couple younger guys that can defend instead of old guys with resumes. Last summer Hartenstein was available for the vet minimum to the surprise of a lot of NBA people. I liked him. But we signed DJ instead and the Clippers signed him and he has been great off their bench. Part of the reason the Clippers are still afloat is because of young guys they got cheap. Damion Jones is a free agent this summer. Let’s get him instead of a random 35 year old. And the first question should be, can they defend. A LeBron centric offense can generate enough points to win with a good defense. It can’t score enough with a bad defense. Hopefully the scouting department have other under achieving young guy like Malik on their radar.

    5. Russ need to find his role with the team and star in it. He has been better lately. If he can constantly play this way it will set us up to be much better next year or like the kids increase his trade value.

    5. If everything played out perfectly we could have a decent returning core. Imagine that, having player continuity. The silver lining in Nunns injury is he will probably have to opt into his player option this year. Which is a good thing because he is a quality player and we will need quality players. I would also like to see Melo come back for one more year. We could see a returning group like this.

    LeBron
    AD
    Russ
    Malik
    Austin
    THT
    Stanley
    Nunn
    Melo

When is the last time we brought back 9 guys that know how to play together? With good health that team would be a top 6 seed for sure. And depending on development of the kids and a couple of good free agent signings maybe more.

And who knows if it comes together by the playoffs this year, we could even make a little noise. I know the Warriors don’t want to see us. It took bad games from AD and LeBron for them to win. And with our size advantage we are a bad match up for them. Anything is possible until you’re eliminated so who knows? Every team the Suns faced in the playoffs last year had an important player or two missing until the finals. That’s why you play the games.

    Aloha,

The words coming from LeBron lately leads me to believe he will be gone after next year. Just a few of what he’s said.

With the All-Star game in Cleveland, Jason Lloyd of The Athletic asked LeBron if a return to the Cavaliers was possible.

“The door’s not closed on that,” James told The Athletic Saturday following the East’s team practice on the campus of Cleveland State. “I’m not saying I’m coming back and playing, I don’t know. I don’t know what my future holds. I don’t even know when I’m free.”

    And

My last year will be played with my son,” James said. “Wherever Bronny is at, that’s where I’ll be. I would do whatever it takes to play with my son for one year. It’s not about the money at that point.”

So why wait? He brought this on himself and now he’s trying to blame others for the utter failure that trading for Russ was. We can be left with nothing or be proactive.

Trade LeBron for Jarret Allen, Love and a 1st round and 2nd round pick. Toronto has been searching for a skilled big. Send AD to them for Achiuwa, Anunoby, Tent jr and 2 1st rounders. Detroit wanted 2 firsts for Grant, send Love and 2 first rounders. Now you have a young talented group and once Russ falls off the books, more cap space and picks. But, that probably won’t happen, he will leave the team in shambles like he normally does.

Maybe it’s time to cut bait.

    • The only problem with that is the same you always have with trades. Not going to happen. I can’t envision a scenario where the Lakers trade LeBron and AD, as logical as it might be.

I think what we’re seeing is the Lakers trying to distance themselves a little from Klutch Sports and LeBron putting on the pressure already to make major moves this summer or else.

Problem is I don’t see Rob Pelinka trading LeBron. Bronny won’t be eligible to be drafted until 2024. Lakers will try to make sure to somehow draft Bronny, even if it costs them picks, to keep LeBron and Klutch happy. And trading AD would be foolish.

Could it happen? Man, anything’s possible and the Lakers don’t have strong, intelligent, problem solving ownership and management right now. That’s the difference between the LeBron transition being an opportunity or a danger. That’s what worries me.

      • I agree that’s why I said it’s probably not going to happen. But it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t. And as far as trading AD, I don’t think it’s foolish. He hasn’t proven that he can be a true number one guy. He’s injured a lot and disappears to often. We could have a core of young rising stars, cap space in another year. Extra draft picks and very tradable contracts. I fear in a year we will have AD and not much else after next year. And the 2023 free agent class is that exciting to me. We will probably go after another star on the wrong side of 30.

    • Like the man said….”Get busy livin or get busy dyin”. LeBron will be here for one more season…maybe two. He’s got no problem prodding Pelinka into tossing away those future draft picks especially since he ain’t gonna be here to deal with it. Then we’re stuck with AD and the Los Angeles Pelicans. I wouldn’t hesitate to start testing the waters for an AD trade right now..he can’t be the future face of the franchise.

    • In a star driven league, we’ve got 5 of the 75, but it’s not good enough. So we blame management? It’s their job to get stars, faded or not. Tis what it is…

    • At this point, I don’t know if any team would want to trade for AD anymore. He is just not durable at all. Trading him might just be the place to start. And that is if it’s possible at all.

    Would you take a look?

After a two-year ban for violating the NBA/NBPA anti-drug program, guard Tyreke Evans has been reinstated to play in the league.

Evans, 32, is eligible to begin negotiating with teams immediately and can sign a contract as soon as Friday at noon ET, the league announced on Monday.

Evans is considered to be in good physical condition and is expected to start making himself available to work out for teams. He averaged 15.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 594 career games.

He is 6’ 6” and has been a good wing player at both wing positions. If we don’t land one of the name players in the buyout, it be smart to at least have him in for a work out.

    Aloha,

Mark Cuban said that his biggest mistake as an owner was tearing apart his championship roster after they won. If only the Lakers had learned from others mistakes. A championship team should look for roster tweaks to improve but the Lakers over two season went above and beyond a tweak here and there. They burnt the roster to the ground. All in the name of maximizing LeBron’s championship window. What the accomplished was the complete opposite.

There is nothing wrong with a big 3, but it’s extremely hard to accomplish as both the Lakers and the Nets discovered. You almost have to have at least drafted on of your big 3. And a team has to have at least a couple of decent role players left after the dust settles. The last and maybe most important element is your big 3 all need to compliment each other like say the Bucks big 3 do.

The justification for adding Russ was the same reason we acquired Dennis. To take the load of of LeBron. I didn’t mind the Dennis acquisition as much because it didn’t cost as much. The reality was that LeBron is going to play like LeBron plays until he hangs ‘‘em up. All the Lakers really needed was a point guard that plays well with LeBron. A decent secondary ball handler that can defend. Alex Curso anyone? Even Dennis was a better fit, at least he defends. It’s a shame Nunn has been hurt because he fit the mold perfectly. He would be slotted into the Avery role which would have been a real upgrade. If one went into a lab to create the worst possible fit as a co star for LeBron, after the smoke from the explosion cleared, Russ would walk into the gym surrounded by 10 mismatched minimum contracts. That isn’t the way to maximize Lebron’s. Window. Can you imagine how dismal the season would have been if we had not hit on Malik and Melo?

Unfortunately we will probably have a repeat next year, considering we are over the cap with just 6 players under contract, 7 if Nunn opts in, which he may have to since he has not played. Now with a reasonable amount of injurie luck we probably can be a decent team, but not a championship team next year.

2023 is our reset year. It is what the Lakers should be focused on. Only AD and THT are under contract and I think it’s very important that we do nothing going forward to mess it up. We will see how badly LeBron wants another ring before he retires. If he wants another max deal, I would cut him loose. The 2023 class has a lot of aging stars that I wouldn’t look seriously at but 2 names that jump out at me are Gary Trent Jr and Jamari Grant. Trent Jr is having a break out year and we all know about Grant. And they both defend their asses off.

We can start preparing for 2023 now by giving a lot of minutes to THT, Austin and Stanley. They all could develop into championship role players. If Nunn does opt in I would be very careful before I traded him and THT. There would need to be obvious upside there to give them up.
Another aging star? No thank you. I’m not sure if there will be a market for Russ this summer either unless he plays like he did against the Warriors the rest of the year. And even that may not be enough. I don’t see a Russ for Wall trade as anything more then trading one bad contract for another.

What we can’t afford to do is make anymore stupid moves in the name of winning now, because with what we have now in the asset department doesn’t add up to enough to help to win another ring, next year, even with good health.

I haven’t completely given up on this year. If we added a useful piece in the buy out market, the kids begin to develop and give us more good games, if AD can bring beast mode back on a nightly basis, we stay healthy and get Nunn back in time for him to develop a rhythm and Russ can play well like the Warriors game, we might make some noise. Yes that’s a lot and probably not enough to win a ring. But it could set us up for a better year next year, especially if some how we can keep Monk. Still 2023 should be the focus moving forward. Don’t let Rob mess it up Jeanie.

    • Aloha, Michael,
I don’t blame the Lakers for trying to upgrade the championship team. In retrospect, we benefited greatly from the four-and-a-half-month season suspension and the elite teams like the Clippers and Bucks getting upset. Yes, we were the last and best team standing but it was obvious that this team needed upgrades and that lightening LeBron’s load had to be a priority. I’ve always believed you never stand pat. You assume everybody else is getting better so standing still is not an option.

The problem last year was the same as this year: Pelinka didn’t execute by making the right moves. Instead of a game changer like Markieff Morris, last year we got Dennis Schroder, turned down the Lowry trade to keep THT, and landed Andre Drummond. This year, we scored big on Monk, Melo, and Reaves but missed badly almost everywhere else, especially with Russ and the lack of small forwards. Two years of essentially missing on most of our personnel decisions. The problem to me was not that we broke up a championship team but that we didn’t end up with a better team.

We see summer completely different as expected. I think Russ’ expiring contract and our two first round picks plus THT and Nunn could bring us a legitimate third superstar like Dame if he requested a trade to the Lakers or three quality starters to play alongside LeBron and AD. What worries me is I think the evidence is mounting that the three starters option might be a smarter route for the Lakers to go than the third superstar, although we already know what direction the Lakers will go. They didn’t resist trading the 2027 draft pick midseason because they ever expect to keep the pick. They just want to add it to the 2029 first round pick that they will be able to offer once the season is over. Two post-LeBron and possibly unprotected Lakers first round picks could be very attractive.

While the Lakers have obviously made a big effort to keep their salary cap open for 2023, I’m not sold that clearing cap space for then will continue to be important. The reality of two years lost from LeBron’s championship window should be enough to push the Lakers into a total win-now mode. They want a third superstar for next season and that’s what Russ’ expiring contract and two post-LeBron first round picks and filler can bring. I much prefer going after two non-superstar players like Gary Trent, Jr. or Jerami Grant via trade next summer rather than trying to get them as free agents.
The Lakers have mistakenly tried in the past to create cap space at the cost of not signing players to multi-year contracts. It’s what we’ve been doing since we got LeBron. What the Lakers need are valuable tradeable contracts that can help them create continuity and win basketball games. You can always find takers for those kinds of players if you need to dump salary. I would have no problem taking back Derrick Rose, Alec Burks, Nerlens Noel, and Cam Reddish for Westbrook and a draft pick. The kinds of players we should pursue are guys like Trent, Jr. and Grant. We need youth and we need players under contract for more than just a year. I think that would make the Lakers a better team than adding Damian Lillard.

I also haven’t completely given up on this season although it’s going to take luck more than skill to pull us out of this wormhole we’ve created. The biggest problem is there is no one individual we can count upon to get the Lakers back on track in the face of the daunting decisions they need to make. We’re just another let’s go all-in for another superstar to replace Russell Westbrook style move from crashing and burning as a franchise due to management dysfunction.

      • Well Tom, as usual we disagree on the value of our trade assets. THT would have to have a whirlwind of a final 25 and be big in the playoffs to get anything big for him in a summer trade. The surging Raptors will not give up a 23 year old 2 way player for THT. Trent Jr fits both as a rebuild piece and a win now piece. PlUs like Trent Jr THT also can opt out in 2023. There will be several teams with assets this summer that will be interested in Grant. Both the Trailblazers and the Pacers will be interested. Sorry but I don’t believe we will be able to trade for either. And then there is Nunn. Would he opt in if he’s going to get traded? Who knows but he is a Klutch client so there will be internal pressure to keep him. Which isn’t a bad thing because his trade value isn’t that high at the moment and he maybe better then anyone we could land. Of course Russ is the big one. While expiring deals can be valuable, one 47 mil contract would be hard to move. Even harder when it’s Russ. Would the Trailblazer trade Dame to the Lakers for Russ if he asked? Considering he is under contract for several more years I don’t believe they would. They have created the space and gathered assets that could be utilized to help build around him. Perhaps the Knicks would consider it but I doubt it would look like your trade package. Rose is Thibs guy, he’s not going anywhere, especially considering that Rose is better then Russ at this point. It would more likely look something like Burks, Walker, Fournier. Only Burks is interesting to me. Maybe Fournier for a shooter off the bench. However both Burks and Walker are expiring contracts and those are better size contracts for trades. To bad we didn’t have better draft capital to attach to them. What I don’t want to see is another high priced aging star, with nothing left to build a supporting cast with.

Watching the game last night I kept thinking one thing. The Warriors do not want to see the Lakers in the playoffs. The Lakers actually match up well with them. With AD and LeBron we can attack their lack of size. LeBron and AD are not going to miss that many easy shots very often. Of course AD would need to bring his aggressive A game to the game but if he did, we would have a real chance. Also the Warriors lack of rim protection allows Russ, Malik and THT to attack the paint. On defense, well there could be high scoring games. But for whatever reason Avery always plays Steph tough. I think that was why he started last night and it paid off with a good performance when he was assigned to Steph. If our young guys continue to grow over the last couple of months we are capable of giving the Warriors all they can handle.

    • I completely disagree with you on Avery Bradley having anything to do with Steph not having a great game. Did you actually watch the game. Bradley is nothing but a lot of noise in point of attack defense. He could not keep Steph in front of him partly because he was always trying to pressure him.

The eye test is confirmed by the advanced stats. The player with the worst defensive rating on the Lakers last night was none other than Avery Bradley with a 126.8 defensive rating. You must have been wearing your Frank Vogel glasses last night. Frank’s starting lineup had a -15 net rating and played twice as many minutes as any other lineup.

      • Then I don’t know what you are watching. I guess it’s just a coincidence that Steph scores when Avery is out and he doesn’t when he’s in. Nobody in the league keeps Steph in front of them Tom. But basic defense 101, you direct them into help. Steph kills defenses when he turns the corner on his man. He doesn’t do that to Avery. Plus part of the nothing “but noise “as you call it is to harass him at the 3 point line. I’ll take Steph going 1 for 8 from 3 any day of the week. Steph is one of the best to ever play. You can’t stop him completely only contain him and Avery did that.

        • Avery had little to do with it. Steph has been off all season long. LMAO.

          • Really? OMG. It wasn’t even just Avery, the game plan with whoever was guarding him was to harass him at the 3. He wasn’t getting clean looks, that was obviously part of the game plan. Part of “the noise”

I’ve noticed that you can never give a player you don’t like props even when they play well. I mean you are propping Austin and dont get me wrong, he had a great game. THT had 17 points, 3 for 5 from 3 7 boards, 3 assists. A block and a team high +8 to Austin’s -3. But not a peep because you want THT out of the rotation. Sometimes guys just have a good game. I would rather have Malik start at the 2 but I’ll acknowledge Avery when he plays well.

            • How would you game plan Steph Tom. Would you play back or would you send noise at the 3 point line? Would you shade him towards help? Or would you play him straight up or and let him turn the corner. Steph’s a great player. You can’t take away everything.

            • I not only praise players whom I think are playing when other should but root for them to do well. Avery made most of his shots and worked hard on defense, stole a couple of passes, and competed. He is not the great defender he once was and has problems staying in front of his man and Curry had three or four straight easy floaters on him.

THT has an excellent game. Hit his threes and played as good a defense as I’ve seen him play recently. He is obviously feeling less stress. We need to pay Monk, Reaves, and THT more minutes. Their development as players and trading chips is a key goal the rest of this season.

I still don’t get all the love and support for Frank Vogel, who has done as much as anybody to undermine the development of this team with all the time wasted on Jordan and now Bradley while Monk and Reaves get fewer minutes despite playing better by every criteria.

Frank Vogel will not return as Lakers coach. He is a lame duck coach. LeBron and AD and the entire team are not listening to him. It’s not all his fault of course but he’s the easiest thing to change right now. Lakers need to turn the season around or they will pay the price this summer. Changing coaches is the only option left.

Every game we lose where the same problems continue will bring us one day closer to Frank’s firing. Lose two or three more and the vultures will start to circle.

            • As for Steph, I would not have replaced Monk with Bradley. We needed Monk’s offense badly with Melo out. While Bradley is certainly serviceable, the result when he starts is always the same: a double digit deficit.

Steph is shooting 34% from deep. Against us it wasn’t his 3-point shooting that killed us. It was allowing him to get into the paint with floaters and easy assists that killed us. We let a smaller team outscore us in the paint.

Steph was missing wide open threes, not contested threes. He was turning the corner on Bradley all game long. Avery had team’s worst defensive rating for the game.

    • One last thing. The Warriors run Steph all over the court setting multiple screens to free him for 3 point shots. How often was he able to shake Avery? Not often.

      • So where did I actually give Frank love and support? I did like the defensive approach to Steph. Yes he got floaters, he does against everyone, but he was shaded inside t words the help with AD and LeBron. That’s about the best you can do with a player like Steph. He’s going to score. You just have to make it as difficult as possible. As for missing wide open 3’s. Watch the game again. He was forced out of rhythm a lot. By the way the last I looked(yesterday) I believe Steph was shooting.386 from 3 for the season. Not Steph like but still pretty darn good. Oh should he have had the best defensive rating guarding Steph? Bradley draws the very toughest back court assignments because Russ can’t guard anyone. When you are playing all world players like Steph you have to have a team concept. You want him having to make floaters over AD. There isn’t a defender in the league that can stay in front of these amazing point guards. By the way, while I love your boy Austin’s potential he gets beaten off the dribble all the time. He made Ish Smith look like Steph. He had the defensive play of the game but he had to make the play because he got beaten off the dribble by Klay. Not exactly Steph quick. Austin will improve but Steph would have stole his lunch money. Just watch the game again.

    Aloha,

In a season of disappointing losses, this might be at the top. We played with winning energy but couldn’t stop shooting ourselves in the foot. 10 Warriors offensive rebounds were turned into 21 points but 11 of those points came down the stretch. Those were the back breakers. And of course 11 missed free throws. We lose by 2. This happens over and over again. There was a few really bad bounces that led to some 3’s but still we need to stop beating ourself.

One might look at the stat line and think LeBron had a good game. He didn’t really. . 26 points but on 27 shots. I liked his rebounding and playmaking but his shot selection just was regrettable. 2 for 15 in the 2nd half. One thing that is maddening is LeBron gets hit without a foul being called more then any player in the league. We don’t win many games when LeBron takes 10 3’s. Some sloppy turnovers, a couple missed bunnies and missing that free throw with the game on the line. On defense he had trouble with Kuminga. I remember one sequence where LeBron watched Kuminga stroll by him of a put back 2, didn’t even try to put a body on him.

AD played a good defensive game but disappeared for the 4th game in a row on offense. We cannot win if he goes 5 for 13 and 6 for 10 from the line. He had success when he attacked but He settled far to much and missed a bunch of little jumpers. He also missed some bunnies.

I thought Russ had a good game. Yes he still missed a few layups but he only took a couple of jump shots. Had only one turnover and generally played under control, that is how we need him to play.

So how were we still in this game?
Our big 3, our 3 guys 23 and younger. Austin, THT and Malik all played with great energy on both sides of the ball. Austin’s block on Klay was the defensive play of the game. He also went 5 for 5 for 13 points. THT has been shooting much better lately. He has 17 with 3 for 5 from 3. Add in 7 boards and 3 assists. What I like is he’s not forcing anything. He also played well on D for the most part. Great game. Malik had 12 and played with some great energy. Over all the 3 kids out scored the Warriors bench 42 to 20.

Have to give a shot out to Avery as well. When he was assigned to Steph, and gave him all he could handle.

So going forward, this is the way we have to play. They actually looked connected. We have to give as many minutes to the young guys as possible. I think they actually energize the vets. All 3 will make mistakes but we can win some games with their energy. It’s tough loss when you beat yourself.

    Severely Disappointing

    Aloha

How to out out play your opponent and be down by 6, Lakers style.

    Miss 6 free throws
Miss 3 layups, 2 by Russ
    2 terrible unforced turnovers
3 missed 10 footers by AD
AD runs into a 3 point shooter at the end of the quarter

    At least there is energy

    Aloha,

What has happened to the Lakers? This makes the Jim Buss years look absolutely tranquil. First Magic steps down, ripping the organization at an impromptu resignation news conference. While he didn’t name names, it’s not a stretch to believe that Rob was the target of his wrath. Notice he never mentions Rob in any of his many tweets.

Then Rob says that AD and LeBron were on board with not making a move. Then it’s leaked that they very much were not okay with standing pat. The more I watch Rob, the more I’m convinced that he’s a slime ball. It’s no secret that he’s not well liked by other GM’s around the NBA. It appears he negotiates like agent. That’s good when you are an agent but bad if you are a GM. And you can not under any circumstances lie about your stars.

Then there is Russ, in his interview yesterday he said that his back tightened up because he is not used to sitting. Just lovely.

And finally the rumor that we didn’t make a trade that would have brought in two helpful players because of luxury taxes. Nothing more appealing to a free agent than a cheap organization.

So here is the question. If you are a bought out, do you, Choose the Lakers in 9th place embroiled in all of this controversy swirling around the organization? I have my doubts that top tier candidates will choose the Lakers. And it could very well spill into free agency this summer.

Laker excellence? Hardly. The solution? Jeanie needs to clean house this summer. First step fire Rob. Will she? After all he is a FOB. (Friend of Kobe). Hopefully Magic and Kurt will educate her. Most of his moves since the championship has failed. And then all this added drama. He needs to go. Then they need a new coach. Frank has lost the ear of the team and while it’s not all his fault, this has to be done. And it has to happen this summer. We can’t wait another year. Only AD and THT are under contract in 2023. It’s a chance for the team to build something new but if the organization is still in turmoil in 2023, who will want to come?

There isn’t much that the front office and Frank can do now. I always knew that we didn’t have the assets to land a star. I knew if the season was to be salvaged it was going to be up to the players. And that’s truer now then ever. At this point I’m looking more to the future than this season. And if both can happen, great.

THT, Austin and Stanley all have shown promise but all have been inconsistent. All three should get a lot of minutes. These players develop with be so important, whether as part of next years rotation and as trade pieces.

If Russ want to get paid after next year then he needs to improve his value, because he currently has very little value. And running his mouth won’t help. If need be Frank needs to sit him. And LeBron needs to get in his face and tell him to shut the f**k up.

We are a mess, and what happens over the last 26 games will tell us a lot about whether the Lakers can turn this organization around.

What the F**k is going on?

    • we’re finally seeing all of the dirt and dysfunction that Rob Pelinka has managed to hide over the past two years suddenly being exposed to the bright lights. Nothing has really changed. Lakers still run by a coalition of questionably qualified people in a informal mangement stand off not founded on any solid basketball philosophy or style of play criteria other than big names and big stars.

Sources: The Lakers, Knicks and Raptors have discussed a 3-team trade.

Lakers get Cam Reddish and Alec Burks.

Knicks get Goran Dragic and draft picks.

Raptors get Talen Horton-Tucker and Nerlens Noel.

Not a major earth shattering deal but This is actually bigger then I could have anticipated. I had posted about the possibility of nabbing Reddish and Burks is a good player. Love to see it happen.

Not season altering deal but still…

Just when you thought the Lakers couldn’t sink any lower. We have this monstrosity. The single most embarrassing loss of the year. The low point of what, the last 20 years? Enough said.

    This ain’t on Russ

    • Lakers don’t need a trade. They need a heart transplant.

      • A heart transplant is probably an understatement but one tells the whole truth about this team. The body language is very telling. The hunger, the fire in the belly, and the lack of sense of urgency are almost non-existent. And yes, heart transplant is the word indeed.

    • I have said it before, Russ might not be the solution in so many people’s opinions but he is certainly not the problem for this team either. I am glad he did not play tonight just so folks can find something else to chew on. If I were Russ, I would sit and rest my body til after the all-star break. Just be honest everyone. If Westbrook had played the entire story of this game would have been Westbrook’s errors, selected out in clips, stats. The full-on Westbrook hysteria would have been the story.

The narrative would have been how bad he played, which would have undoubtedly included a bunch of turnovers, missed layups, and a whole bunch of negative stuff. I am not here to defend Russ. I get really upset when I see those turnovers and missed layups. The same goes for LeBron when he missed three wide-open layups and the six turnovers to go with it. This team’s problems go beyond an individual player. It even includes a coaching staff who are baffled beyond comprehension and seemed more worried about their job security to the point of serious malpractice when it comes to utilizing players to their strengths.
