Aloha
Im beginning to think that our tough closing schedule could be just exactly what this team needs. It seems lately like we get up for the good teams and let our guard down against the poor ones. Todays game was the opposite of the Wizards game. This 4th quarter the ball moved and everyone was involved and on the defensive end we locked in and shut them down. We out scored them 35-23. And the Cavs are a good young team that only gives up 104 a game.
There isn’t much left to say about LeBron. Too think he is in the running to win a scoring title at 37 is almost surreal. And he was more locked in on defense then I’ve seen him for a while. But it helps that Cleveland plays super big so he didn’t have to do a lot of chasing today. As for an overall game I actually thought this was a better in this pgame then his 50 pointers.
Frank made an ADJUSTMENT!!! After Garland has burned Austin and every other guard that drew him, Frank put Stanley on him and he shut Garland down he only scored 2 points on Stanley and I don’t believe he got an assist in the 4th. Plus they didn’t switch much and Stanley did a good job fighting through picks to stay in front of him. Stanley because he’s so strong often is slotted at the 4 or even the 5 but I sure would like to see him defending the perimeter more. He is our best perimeter defender. Stanley also scored all 12 of his points in the 4th.
Kids kids kids
One of the biggest reasons the team is playing better, is the young group are getting better. Austin, Malik, Gabriel and Stanley all played with energy, defended and chipped in on offense. Gabriel had another great game.I’ve always liked DJ. I have wanted the Lakers to sign him for a long time. He is just the a steady old fashion floor general with a really nice 3 point shot. He was huge tonight and he demonstrated that he can play off the ball when he’s out there with LeBron or Russ. Along with Melo, he is the other OG I want to bring back next year.
Has Russ finally figured it out? I sure hope so because we don’t stand a chance if he doesn’t. He has been really good offensively over the last several games. While he isn’t a a very good defender I’ve seen him at least hustling on the defensive end.
While Dwight didn’t get a lot of run I think it’s important to get him a few minutes just to keep him engaged.
For long stretches tonight we saw LeBron and the kids, and the kids delivered. The Cavs are a young group and have played well this year. But our kids went toe to toe with all of those high lottery draft picks. We are going to need that every night going forward.

Aloha,
So much for turning it around. Will this team ever learn that it’s a 48 minute game?

Aloha,
I became really steamed watching this game. Not because we played badly but because we competed with the kind of energy you need to win. They demonstrated that we can play hard. We would have many more wins if we had played with this kind of energy. We may not win but we should have been playing this way all year.
The last 3 games we had come out playing LeBron iso ball and if it wasn’t LeBron it was iso with Russ. When both LeBron and Russ got off to slow starts we got blown out in the 1st. Today bodies were moving and the ball was moving. We had 33 assists.
It’s no surprise that we shot the ball much better today. When the ball is moving and everyone is involved guys get into a rhythm of the game and the shots are in rhythm.
We started big today. I think the micro line ups we have been starting are okay as a change of pace but we have been getting killed inside. Dwight and Gabriel gave us the size to complete with the long Raptors. I think that Dwight should get more run for the rest of the year.
As for Gabriel, he was terrific. we need sign this kid this summer. I have been impressed with him since we signed him. He is long and plays with energy. He would give us another young player off the bench that we can develop.
Russ had one of his best games as a Laker. It would be great if he can gain some confidence for the rest of the year. I have thought all along that Russ didn’t need to be great, just good.
For me the best part of this game was that every single guy that played contributed. Let’s see if we can string a few of these kind of games together.
-
“I am angry” Michael you beat me to that one. I felt the same way. I kept thinking if they have been playing like this earlier in the season we would have won many games. All it took was to put Gabriel in the starting lineup. The energy he brought in to start the game set the tone for the rest of the game. Having Dwight also helped a lot. As for Russ, I am hoping this would be the confidence booster he needs. I thought I heard someone call him Russell Clutchbrook. That last three was unbelievable. Great effort by everyone.
-
LOL. I’m happy! I had the complete opposite reaction to tonight’s game, the great contributions early by Wenyen and late by Bradley plus the heroics by LeBron and the game tying steal and clutch three by Russ were all signs to me that the team was finally fighting through the malaise that had hung over them like a witch’s curse.
I love Lakers small ball because it’s stylistically small but sizewize it’s small ball on steroids. I hate the micro ball lineups where we are outsized at every position and doomed to lose the points in the paint and rebounds battle.
I was called for Frank to start Dwight and Wenyen two games ago and was thrilled to see that lineup last night. Not only did Wenyen shoot the three ball well but his defense and hustle along with Dwight’s allowed us to play real basketball for a change.
This was the season-cleansing game we needed. Russ’ redemption. Russ’ revenge. Great to see him get some flowers as a Laker. I thought he played great, getting into the paint but not forcing shots and hitting open cutters and shooters. This was winning basketball from Russell Westbrook. Could be too little too late or could be the spark this team needed to get hot.
-
I think you missed my point Tom. Of course I was happy. I was angry because we rarely play with the energy we demonstrated tonight when we are capable of playing hard. We would have a much better record if we had played this hard all year.
-
No, I got your point, Michael, and understand why you would feel that way. Not saying you weren’t happy. Why can’t we play like this every game? Of course, we’re all happy to see a win like last night. Wasn’t trying to infer that you weren’t happy. I just saw the win in a different light.
I haven’t bought in that the team didn’t care and that was why they were losing. To me, all the chaos, injuries, disappointment, and bad bounces had sapped the fire and heart out of this team. Every ball seemed to bounce in the other team’s favor. It was like the basketball gods were punishing us for trading for Russ. Tonight, it was like the curse was lifted.
Probably is just a brief hiatus in the horrors of this season but I think it could also be a turning point when the team suddenly starts to play at a much more consistent and higher level. At least that’s what I’m going to take into the next game. As an optimist, I know little things like Russ pulling out this win can turn into major moments. Just hoping that’s what happens with this game. It would be great to see and I feel it could change everything for Russ with the Lakers. This was HIS game!

Aloha,
There isn’t much to say about last night. The game was over after the first quarter. While LeBron recovered he and Russ were as much to blame for that ugly blow out 1st as anyone else on the team. And of course Frank was slow to react as usual by not bringing in Dwight when we were being destroyed inside.
All season it has been injuries as an excuse. And of course it’s true, still watching the Suns with key players out dismantle us made it clear that even if we would have hadn’t had the injuries we never were going to be a true contender this season. Sure we would have a better record, we more then likely would have been a top 6 seed, but we just would not stack up with the elite teams in the league.
This franchise has been mismanaged since Kobe’s last years. We gathered a lot of assets during our losing stretch. And while we landed AD, we pissed the rest away and it still haunts us. Then of course we totally dismantled a championship team in two years. While you always want to look to improve a championship team, you don’t completely tear it down. AD said we would have beat the Suns last year if he wasn’t hurt and I agree. But we had a much better team last year. This years version has a collection of aging minimum contract vets, that rarely get in the game. When you are playing a two way guy like Gabriel and a G leaguers signing like Stanley over Trevor or Bazemore it’s telling. Austin was undrafted but plays while Wayne sits. This team never was constructed to win. Even if Russ had played constantly well this year, we didn’t have enough.
So this summer will be huge for the franchise. If management gets it wrong we could be losing for a very long time. When you look at the west it’s going to be a daunting task for this team to complete next year. The Suns and the Warriors have pieces in place to win big next year. The Griz are ahead of schedule but have the cap space to add quality veteran role players and the pieces for a big trade if they choose to do so. Denver’s injury bug rivaled ours and they will be very good when healthy. And speaking of health the Clippers could be as good as anyone. Of course they are dealing with the Clippers curse. The basketball gods were not happy with them coming to LA and rain injuries down on them every time they field a contender.
Even if we pull off one of Tom’s wildest trades, I can’t see it making us a champion. Any moves we make will need to be for players we can build with. I really don’t want us bringing in anymore aging vets for a last desperate stab at a championship. Want to trade our 2 first rounders? Fine go get Grant. Don’t use them to dump Russ. I know it’s always written that you can’t waste Lebrons remaining years but if a trade isn’t going to help win a ring, add a piece or two and see what you can add the following year. We could easily be a bad team in 2017 and 2019. I would hate to spend those picks on guys like Wall and Gordon who isn’t going to move the needle enough to help us win. Guys like Brogdon and Buddy would give us a better foundation to add to but probably not a ring. Management completely forgot what what it takes to build a winner and blew it up for Russ. We can’t afford to make that kind of mistake again.

Aloha, Michael,
Nights like last night are hard to handle for Lakers fans. Looked like a superstar and team that have given up on being able to win any games at this point. Just when you think this team has hit a new season low, they prove to you that they haven’t hit rock bottom yet. Just a terrible embarrassment for the Lakers. As the ultimate optimist, I had this game down as the last chance turning point for the season. Could the Lakers come together and beat the best team in the west. I had high hopes when we started out but then Russ took two ill-timed jumpers, which when bricked ignited fast breaks for the Suns and the rout was on.
You’re right that it’s not just injuries that have led to this dismal situation. I’m not even sure that it’s the roster below LeBron and AD that have been the problem. Frankly, there are more keepers on this roster besides LeBron and AD in Monk, Reaves, and Melo. The problem after those five, the talent fall-off is severe, and Monk and Reaves aren’t ready yet to be starters on a legit championship team.
It’s hard to defend the Lakers management, even back during Kobe’s last run. Getting LeBron and AD were huge as was the bubble championship. After that, however, the Lakers have shown a complete disdain for several key measures of a championship team. Namely, chemistry, continuity, and the power of size. I worry that we have not learned anything from the last two years.
We broke up rather than tweaked the championship team, understanding that we had an easy route and outlier shooting from a rested and healthy LeBron and AD. We went for more offense but Dennis was not the answer. Last offseason, we loaded up on vets who could shoot but not defend. Frankly, take away Klutch gifting us LeBron and AD and what has Rob done. Signing Monk was great but we were his only bidder. The Buss boys found Austin.
The problem to me is the different stakeholders on the Lakers. Jeanie and his inner circle of Kurt and Linda and Magic. Rich Paul and LeBron and Klutch. Then Frank and the coaches. And finally, Rob and his team in the front office. Rob must take charge and get everybody back on the same page or we will have a disastrous summer that could set us back for years. That’s really our only hope of surviving this summer. It’s all on Rob to get LeBron to sign an extension, get Jeanie to OK taking back multiple year salary to get better starters, and to pay whatever luxury taxes we need to build a championship team.

Thinking about moves this summer, I’m wondering how much we can do with Russ and his expiring contract if he continues to struggle. Oh we can probably move him, using our 2 first rounders but I’m not so sure we can get enough value back to matter. The pipe dream of course is Brogdon and Buddy. While I will never say never after the trade the Trailblazers made with the Clippers, I will say it is highly unlikely. If Brogdon goes on the market, he will draw a lot of interest from other teams, especially the Knicks who can give the Pacers young players and picks. Just dumping Russ with picks would be a disaster.
So what is my ideal summer outcome, considering our limited assets? Well, the Pistons were asking for 2 first rounders for Grant. As soon as the season ends, I would contact the Pistons to see if they would consider the 2 picks and THT for Grant. THT has been up and down this year but has been trending more up than down lately and last night he looked like he has recovered from that nagging ankle sprain he’s been dealing with. If he continues to raise his level of play, the Pistons just might be interested.
At that point I would waive and stretch Russ. It would give of enough room to sign Malik. So in a way those two picks lands us both Grant and Malik. This would leave us with a starting line up of Reeves, Malik, LeBron, AD and Grant. As long as LeBron plays for the Lakers we don’t need a traditional ball dominate PG. That hasn’t worked yet, and won’t work in the future. Malik has shown enough playmaking ability to take the load off LeBron.
And remember we won a ring without a starting PG. Just 2 defensive minded shooting guards. We could have a bench of Nunn, who will probably opt in, Stanley, hopefully Melo, and perhaps Gabriel. With the tight money this year, there will be some talent that will float down to us. For instance, Damien Jones will be a free agent. He would be a nice get as a back up big. We just need a couple of guys that can contribute off the bench.
Is this a championship roster if we are healthy? Probably not. Still I think it is best the best we can do with the assets we have. Sure one can come up with trades on the trade machine but those don’t happen. I try to stay realistic. And with a couple of decent free agents and health, you never know. I actually like this better than a Brogdon/Buddy deal with the way Malik has been coming on. I think he has a lot of ceiling left. He also shoots the 3 like Buddy but makes plays and defends. Something Buddy doesn’t do. And Grant gives us a young defender with size, something we need much more than a PG in a LeBron centric offense. If we use our picks with the Pacers, Malik is likely gone. Malik and Grant are a better duo than Brogdon and Buddy.
-
Good post, Michael. Ironically, I don’t think Russ’ play will have much impact. His value at this point is his expiring contract, not his game.
OPTION 3
I also am warming to the idea of using the picks to add rather remove players, which means using a buyout and then waive and stretch of Russ to be able to use the cap savings to pay Monk the full $10M MLE to keep him even though we would be hard capped. Then use the 2 picks to go after Jerami Grant, as you suggested.
Only issue would then be no point guard, although working with Klutch we might see John Wall work a buyout and sign with the Lakers for maybe the BAE to fill the point guard role.
PG – WALL
SG – MONK
SF – GRANT
PF – JAMES
CE – DAVIS…
OPTION 2
The perfect scenario for me is obviously still the Pacers. Lakers would give up both picks, Russ, THT, and Johnson for Turner, Hield, and Brogdon. No increase in salary or luxury taxes.
PG – BROGDON
SG – HIELD
SF – JAMES
PF – DAVIS
CE – TURNER…
OPTION 3
Other scenario where I would give up both picks would be if we could get the Rockets to give us Wood, Gordon, and Wall in return, which would require Jeanie to incur major luxury taxes.
PG – WALL
SG – MONK
SF – JAMES
PF – DAVIS
CE – WOOD…
At any rate, it clearly is going to be critical decision time for the Lakers front office. Just hope we can somehow avoid the chaos and dysfunction and make the right moves.
Pacers should be #1 target and Rockets #2 target to get three starters. If they don’t bite, then #3 is W&S Russ so we can pay and keep Monk and go for Grant with kitchen sink and both picks and hope Wall can work buyout and join Klutch/Lakers team.
Three very possible options that would work.
-
There’s also an interesting dynamic surrounding the Rockets trade since John Wall is a Klutch client. First, it’s obvious the Lakers are through with Russ and his stubborn refusal to change his game. Second, both sides want to move forward with LeBron signing a two-year extension.
Committing to trading Russ and pieces and both picks to Houston for Wood, Gordon, and Wall could become the favorite option for the Lakers. They get a great starting lineup with a quality point guard in Wall, great two-way shooting guard in Gordon, and potential third star down the road in Wood.
I know you would prefer trading everything for Grant and then waiving and stretching Russ to keep Monk. I like that scenario too and Grant is a great fit. Still leaves us at least one and maybe two starters short. Hope Rob can pull something good off. We’re going to need it.
-
If LeBron James decides that fellow Klutch Sports client John Wall could be a better fit and is willing to push extremely hard for Westbrook’s exit, the Lakers might consider a deal with the Houston Rockets.
-
First Tom I do not believe we can get as much as you think we can. I view the Pacers deal as unlikely and I certainly do not believe they would throw Turner into the deal forTHT. Turner is 25 and fits with the other young players. They would now have to find a center. They made their choice and it was Turner. As for the need for a point guard, I don’t think we need one, at least a starter. LeBron ran the Heat. Wade adjusted to playing off the ball. Kyrie did the same. They both had the skill set to play more as a shooting guard. Wall doesn’t have that skill set. It would almost be like trading Russ for Russ. Wall is the same as Russ, a ball dominate guard that made his name with freakish athleticism. That’s gone. Like Russ, he can’t shoot either. .317 lifetime from 3 and he is not known for being a defender either. as far as Gordon, he is okay but he will be 34. i watched him, he wasn’t hurting us. it was the young guys that hurt us. as for Wood, that move require Lebron to defend the 3. This is where LeBron has aged. He cant defend the perimeter any more. Grant who is a much better player than Wood is a much better fit.
-
i firmly belive that Monk right now is better than either Gordon or Wall. Gordon does shoot .408 from 3 to Maliks .399. Not a big deal. but Monk is much more Athletic, has a better handle, can make plays for others and is defending his ass off. Grant is a perfect fit at the 3. so there are your 2 to 3 starters. I would start, Reeves as the other guard. He would be the perfect glue guy. A strong defender that can do a little bit of everything. A starting line up of Monk, Reeves, Grant, AD and Lebron we be a stronger line up on both sides of the ball. Plus, Lebron would be the only starter over 30. and as we have seen this year, that matters.
-
Aloha, Michael,
I’m a huge fan of Monk’s but …
(1) He’s not a point guard and we need a point guard to reduce load on Bron imo.
(2) He’s not anywhere near the defensive player or proven clutch shooter that Eric Gordon is.
That’s not to say we might be fine with Malik as our starting shooting guard. I would just prefer him as our 6th man killing off the bench.
Same with Reaves. He could start but we’re so much better if he comes off the bench.
Our problem right now is the bench sucks. That’s why we need three new starters so Monk and Reaves come off the bench.
-
-
-
-
-
Even as an expiring I now question what return a Westbrook trade could yield. Better option for both parties might be a W&S. Russ can choose his next home and the Lakers get the tools they need toner-sign MM while creating an artificial spending ceiling.
-
As much as we all hated seeing Deng in the salary list, there’s a good argument to use the 2 picks to add two starters rather than remove Russ. The bonus of being able to offer Monk the full MLE and being able to save luxury taxes could tilt us in this direction.
Need to first make sure we can’t end up with Turner, Hield, and Brogdon or Wood, Gordon, and Wall. I think both of those will be stronger and more versatile teams. Having said that, I would be happy if we could get Grant but we still need three starters.
-
Hard to see Indy trading MT now since Sabonis was shipped. Feels like they want to build a team with him at the 5, Brogdon is a different topic but Indy would need to get a ‘Wow!’ offer to move Myles now. He’s still on a fairly cheap deal. Westbrook does nothing for them, as well. They got better guards already. They don’t do rebuilds and they don’t need cap space since no worthy FA signs there.
-
We’ll see. The appeal of Westbrook for Indiana is getting out of over $100M in contracts for Russ’ expiring $47M. They were still taking offers for Turner after trading Sabonis. They’re not going to rebuild around him. Already did that and didn’t win. They may value two post-LeBron unprotected first round picks.
-
They may. Likely will wait until the deadline next season when he’ll be expiring and can do a trade and extend or whatever. I’m not saying it’s impossible just unlikely. Team’s like Indy don’t need to work as hard as the Lakers to clear space, and again for whom? They’re not likely going to sign LaVine this summer or any other top tier free agent. I’m still a hard No on Wall unless he’s willing to conduct a private workout, maybe gets an MRI so the team can see what he truly has left. Players who need speed don’t age well, just look at Russ. Speed goes down just a tad and suddenly less lift, no blow by power, and so on. Honestly would rather just do a re-do on Russ then bring in Wall but would (sorta) trust the team’s judgement if Wall did a workout

Aloha,
Last night was another example of how poorly this roster was assembled. It is a cautionary tale that illustrates how foolish it is to think you can get by with a lot 30 something minimum contracts vets with their best days way behind them. While most of the old guys sat and watched, the young guys scrapped and played with the energy it takes to win.
When Frank pulled Russ at the 8:30 mark in the 4th. We were up 4. Then we went on a run. DJ, who by the way I think was a good signing left a couple of minutes later and it was 4 young guys and LeBron closing out the game. Fortunately Russ never got back in.
Stanley, was signed from the G league Austin was undrafted, nobody but the Lakers offered Monk a contract, THT was a 2nd round pick and Gabriel who gave us some good minutes is a two way. By the way, I like Gabriel. They should consider giving him a contract this summer. He gives us size and switch ability we have been lacking.
This speaks to how great Jessie Buss and our scouting department is, and how poor of a job Rob has done filling out the roster.
Going forward we should win or lose with the Kids. They all make mistakes but they play the way you are supposed to play, hard. And I am seeing them developing synergy with LeBron. It gives me hope that perhaps we can have rotational young pieces in place for next year, so we don’t have to sign as many minimum probably old vets next year.
-
Great post, Michael. I’m with you on the value of Malik, Austin, Talen, and Stanley. The only probem is they should be the next men up and not the guys closing out games with LeBron.
Giving the kids big minutes and roles for the rest of the regular season is the Lakers’ best chance of improving the team heading into the playoffs. LeBron and AD will have to be healthy and playing great. If they do and the kids can raise their games to another level over the next month, the Lakers may give their fans something to cheer about before the season is done. It’s still possible we can make the conference or NBA Finals.
If the Lakers can find two or three new starters next season by trading Russ and his expiring contract and picks and pieces, then imagine a bench with Monk, Reaves, and Johnson (Assuming THT and Nunn have to be traded for their $10M and $5M contracts).
That’s the pathway to the Lakers returning to being a legitimate contender. Three new starters is what the Lakers need to be a legitimate championship contender next season.
-
Hi, Michael. Thanks for pointing out the obvious, which is to prepare our young players for the long haul by playing them more. The days of experimenting with the old veterans is over. Tom also echoed the same sentiment earlier today, and that is also my opinion. I think even the coaching staff are finding themselves on board with that. The young players bringing that kind of energy is absolutely what is going to help this team improve. Your take on Gabriel was on point and I think they should give him more minutes. We are still going to need an additional center and Moses Brown has always been my choice.
Too often we get manhandled in the paint. The other day, against the Spurs, Poetl made me feel like I was witnessing the second coming of Wilt Chamberlain. We lack length and height around the rim and that’s why I would like to see Gabriel get more time and let him mix it up with the guys until AD comes back. Yeah, you definitely made good points.

Why do I even watch the games? On a night that Russ actually played well, LeBron had perhaps the worst triple double that I have seen in a very long time. And why did LeBron pass out of a game winning layup? While 4 blocks may look good on the stat sheet but he doesn’t play enough defense. He had a team high -17. Just so disappointing.
Saddest Lakers team of my lifetime. Dysfunction. Fading former superstars. Injuries. Covid. Bad coaching and awful roster decisions. Ironic we’re getting a show about the greatest Lakers teams at the same time this sad excuse of a squad still suits up. Lebron is old, AD is epitomizing his streetclothes moniker, and calling Russ washed is an insult to the washed out there. Blow it up, get Klutch tf outta town, and do some deep soul-searching as to how the great Dr. Buss would’ve handled this.

Aloha,
After digesting another Laker loss, that easily could have been a win, I came up with 3 reasons Lakers lost. Hopefully they aren’t repeated today, especially if LeBron sits again.
1. So much for the “if Russ plays alone, he can be himself and lead the team “ theory. He had a miserable first quarter with 4 turnovers. His inept play helped build the Spurs lead. He was better in the middle but fell apart at the end going 1-6 in the 4th. 5-17 and 5 turnovers to 6 assists, won’t cut. 7-13 from the free throw line didn’t help. With or without LeBron he has to find a way to regain his confidence or even trading him for anything at all will be difficult this summer.
2. Franks inability to make the proper in game adjustments is simply mind boggling at times. He chose not to put Dwight back in when Pop inserted Poeitl back into the game. Pop exploited the mismatch and Poeitl destroyed us in the paint and on the glass. It was too much to ask of a Melo to ask him to check a player with that kind of size advantage. It literally won the game for the Spurs.
3. I’m not as concerned with this one as the other 2, but Melo and Malik our primary 3 point shooters went a combined 2-11 from 3. It happens, but our margin for error is razor thin and we can’t afford to have them both cold in the same game.
One more note. The officiating continues to be lopsided even with LeBron out. That no call on THT’s layup attempt was one of the worst missed calls I have seen this year. The guy wasn’t even close to the ball, hitting THT on the elbow. Of course the Spurs picked up the ball and hit a 3. A potential 5 point swing down the stretch of a close game. Unforgivable.

Aloha,
I almost didn’t watch tonight. It’s whale season here in the islands and they have been putting on a much better show than the Lakers in the early evening and I was tempted to go down to the ocean to watch. I am glad I didn’t.
What can you say about LeBron, obviously his best offensive game in a long time. But he’s going get all the well deserved headlines and stories so, I’m going to give a few shout outs to some of the other guys.
First Russ had one of his better games for a long time. Yes he had a couple of cringe worthy turnovers but he only had one missed lay up That I can recall. 20 points and he shot over 50%. He really picked his spots and used a lot of head fakes to get points in the paint. He needs to play this way every game. Not only for us to win but to recover some of his value.
Our +|- champs both had excellent games. Monk was a +19 and Austin was a +18. Malik shot the 3 well but he also had a team high 5 assists. He improves on defense by the game. He had a block and 3 steals. That steal he had on that on the out of bounds play was spectacular. He just skied. His athleticism has been the biggest surprise for me this year.
Austin is the hardest working guy on the floor. He just doesn’t back down from anyone, regardless of who it is. 2 blocks, 3 steals, 10 points 3 for 5 from 3. He just gives 100% all the time.
Stanley also is another guy that plays hard every minute. 6 boards, 4 assists, a block and 2 steals and the ability to stay in front of 1 through 5.
Those 3 guys bring the energy every night and I just hope they continue to get the minutes. There was one play down the stretch. Missed shot, Malik mange’s to tap the ball and Austin flys in to grab the board, finds LeBron who drives and kicks to Melo for the dagger 3. Melo gets credit for dagger but it was Malik and Austin’s hustle that made it possible. It’s the kids that will really decides how the season will end if they are given the chance.
Finally Melo is just steady. But he is in there to score but I’ve been surprised by his defense. He’s had some good defensive moments and
He rebounds as well. 8 tonight. So believe it or not, I’m worried about the next 2 against the Rockets and Spurs. It’s almost better if we were playing good teams. Hopefully they will play with the same desperations that they did tonight.
-
Man, I love the whale stuff you mentioned. Never seen that before. Not sure if it is the same as the orca’s shows which I have seen in certain cities across the country. But anyway, a great recap of the game.
I can’t tell you how satisfied I am with Reaves, Monk, and Stanley. You have been preaching for these youngsters to get more playing time for a long time now, and so far the results have been right there in front of our eyes. That’s our best route, just wish that was the case earlier in the season. The energy that they bring to the table can’t be ignored.
Just out of curiosity, don’t you think Vogel should find a way to give Wenyan Gabriel some playing time? How about we go after Moses Brown on our two-way? We need size and length and both would be a good choice while AD is out.
I am happy we have Melo to help with the scoring load. You are also right about him being pesky on defense. Now that was vintage LeBron. Enough said.
If we are assured of a play-in position then it would be wise to rest him before the playoffs start and with AD back. A seven-game series can go any way with a rested LeBron. Thanks for the recap.

thanks Buba, these are wild humpback whales that migrate to Hawaii from Alaska every year in the winter. Seems like everyone winters in Hawaii. They come into this cove and you can watch them from the shore. Last night I saw five or 6 pretty spectacular breaches. Think Malik’s is athletic? Those guys pulling all those tons completely out of the water is pretty amazing.
-
-
Great points about Monk and Reaves. While Malik is the offensive wiz, he’s showing he can also make plays on defense with his hops and athleticism. While Austin is the defensive wiz, he’s showing that, like Monk, he’s really a well-balanced player who can impact the game on both ends. Going to be hard to move these two Arkansas kids from the Lakers’ starting lineup.

Austin and Stanley played well in the 1st quarter. Took them out after 9 minutes. Malik played well in the 1st as well. Started the 2nd with nearly a 6’ 4” and under team. Bradley, Russ and DJ? Really? Austin and Stanley didn’t get back in until under 7 minutes in the 2nd. Malik didn’t get back in until 4 minute mark. So they wiped us out until our young guys come back and stopped the bleeding. WTF Frank? Yes guys needs a break but sitting all those guys that long? Plus a super short group? Hope we don’t see that again. Ever.

Aloha,
If the Lakers are looking for a move for Russ that brings a little something back, I think the point guard hungry Knicks might be the most likely place for Russ to land.they would have a year to see if he fits. I I like the idea of Brogdon/Buddy with the Pacers but let’s face it, Russ would be a fall back deal not the top of their list.
The Knicks would send us Fournier and Walker who they have been trying to move. Walker has been so bad that they are sitting him the rest of the year but Fournier could be useful as a scorer off the bench. Walker could be an end of the bench break glass PG or he could be stretched. His 9.5 mil left wouldn’t hurt much. The Knicks would have to include Taj Gibson. His contract isn’t guaranteed so we could cut him or hold on to him for depth. The final player and the jewel of the trade world be Cam Reddish. Thibs never wanted that trade for Cam. The Knicks have cap space so no more salary would be needed and we knock at least 12 mil off our cap. I wouldn’t even include any future 1st since we are helping each other. Maybe a couple of 2nd’s if Cam is included.
-
This is my preferred trade partner as it opens the door us to also keep Monk. Russ is a prototypical Thibbs player, as well.
-
The Pistons asking price for Grant was 2 1sts. If we could pull off a Knick trade without giving up a 1st, perhaps the Pistons would take THT, our 2 firsts and Walker who is expiring and could be cut for Grant.
-
-
Aloha, Michael,
I also like the Knicks as a trading partner and Reddish as our stealth target. The pieces aren’t as appealing as the Pacers pieces but there are more options on players. I would like to see if the Knicks were willing to move Rose if we took Randle. Need a point guard to replace Russ, which is why I like the Pacers trade. Also always loved Julius as a small ball point five.
The other team that’s interesting is the Thunder because we could get Favors, Muscala, and Williams while creating a $30 million trade exception that could be used for a player like Kevin Love or Tobias Harris.
The key is taking back contracts of players who woud be big upgrades over the minimum salary players we have starting next to LeBron, AD, and Russ right now. When healthy, that is.
Give me three new starters to replace minimum salary vets and Lakers will be back in contention.
-
Aloha Tom, when looking at the Knicks, I tried to stay with what they tried to do, find a point guard while shedding a couple of contracts they didn’t want. I doubt they would give up Randle. And Rose is Thibs guy, I can’t see them giving him up. My reasoning was we could make this swap and save our draft picks to land another quality player like Grant. I don’t like the OKC trade. While it creates a big trade exception, they are not as valuable without picks to send back. It’s unlikely that my proposal happens but if everything did i think we could be pretty good.
lebron is going to play his game until he retires so you dont need a great point guard. you need a hard nosed defender and secondary ball handler who can also generate offense and hit some 3’s. Nunn fits the bill. while the focus has been on AD and LeBrons injuries, Nunn is a good player and it really hurt us that he hasn’t played. at this point I suspect he will opt into his option. And with the tight money this summer its not a sure thing that Makik wont be come back for the mini mid level . he really appreciates the fact that the Lakers gave him a chance and there will be more money the following year. so along with the trades. if those 2 things happen we could look something like this.
PG Nunn
SG Malik, Austin, Fournier. Center AD
Forwards, Lebron. Grant, Melo, Reddish, Stanley. With the tight Market there will be some talent that will trickle down. sign a couple of vets. Maybe bring Damien Jones back. and maybe another young guy with promise. finding a couple of promising 2 way guys would be helpful. while this may not win a championship, it’s about as good as i think we could do considering our assets. and if we were relatively healthy, you never know.
-
Aloha, Michael.
I’m not sure the Knicks would like to get out of Julius’ new 4-year contract. The bigger question is would the Lakers be willing to take on his contract? Last year might have been an outlier. Anyway, we need good 4’s and 5’s because LeBron and AD are not enough.
You may be right about Nunn but I would guess 50/50 based on how the rest of Rob’s signings went. Availability is an important ‘ability.’
I think the Lakers need three new starters as I don’t think anybody else on the roster, including Monk and Reaves, is good enough to be a starter on a championship team. I don’t think Nunn can be one of those starters either although the Lakers paid him like they thought he could.
Anyway, I’m all in for being able to move Russ without giving up a pick and I wouldn’t mind splurging and spending the picks to get Grant. That is only part of the perfect solution though as we need a point guard. Think we could get Hield and Brogdon but it will take a pick for sure. Getting both would be GM wizardry.
Hield and Brogdon are more important than Grant although that’s debatable since we have LeBron on the team. We probably have enough left if we can get the Pacers to take Russ to maybe get Cam Reddish. Brogdon, Hield, and Reddish would be a perfect offseason.
Definitely like Damian Jones too. Bring back Melo, Monk, Reaves, and Johnson.
-
I must disagree on Nunn. I’ve seen him play. He’s a very good player and was widely regarded as the steal of free agency. And in preseason he was the talk of training camp. You can’t be great at every position, when you have superstars you just need to be good around them, and I think Nunn is about as good as we can get if we make other moves. Brogdon would be great but he will be highly sought after if the Pacers put him on the market. They can probably get more for him. And if we did make the Knick deal we would have Fournier which is pretty much a Buddy like player. A shooter that can’t defend. Although Fournier has a little more playmaking ability then Buddy. I honestly don’t believe we have the assets to add 3 new starts. We would be lucky to land 2.
-
I do agree that, If there’s a player on this roster who could become a starter, it would be Nunn. Just hard to count on a player who can’t even get healthy for a single game. I mean it’s not like he tore his Achilles or ACL.
My other concern is size. I love small ball but prefer it played by guards who are 6′ 5″ or taller. Same with small ball bigs who are skilled but also big. Small ball on steroids is the unbeatable style. It’s one of the reasons I’ve coveted Brogdon for so long. 6′ 5″229 lbs.

Aloha,
I have to admit, I nearly turned the game off at half time. I tried to think of things that I could do that would be more enjoyable. When I couldn’t arrange any evening dental work or a colonoscopy I gave up and watched the 3rd quarter.
And I was rewarded with a high energy fueled comeback that the team often teases us with. Like a sadist they dangle hope so we can be crushed at the end.
Let’s face it, a lot of our first half woes rested on the shoulders of our superstars, who neither looked super of even start like. They both played poorly.
I have been preaching play the kids more and all 4 of them played hard on the defensive end. I think part of the first half defensive issues was we overplayed Luka, leaving
Brunson to have a great first half. Frank made a good adjustment at halftime, yes Frank and let the kids guard Luka in single coverage. And all 4 of them rotated beautifully. Brunson cooled off and Luka didn’t accomplish much. LeBron looked like LeBron for a quarter and we turned a 16 point deficit into a 6 point lead by the middle of the 4th.So what happened? Well the inexplicable happened. Up to around the 6 to 7 minute mark left in the game, Luka had 18 points on 18 shots, 3 assists and 6 turnovers. In other words we did about as well as you can with Luka. But for some reason it was decided that we abandon what had been working and put LeBron on him. Over a 2 minute period Luka was 3 for 3 with 2 assists. Game over. Now did LeBron say, I have Luka? Maybe but it was the wrong call regardless and it never should have happened. LeBron was clearly gassed and had no business guarding Luka. Anyone who is in favor of adding another big and moving LeBron back to the 3 should watch those last 5 minutes. LeBron just can’t effectively guard the perimeter anymore. And he has apparently forgotten how to box out on the glass as well.
Of course Russ was his usual horrid self.how many 5 for 17 games can the coaches stomach? My sincere hope is that Augustine cuts into some of those Russ minutes and can provide a little consistent offense. Considering Russ is pretty much a defensive liability DJ’s lack of D won’t be much different.
Melo actually was the standard bearer for the oldsters. 20 points on 3 for 6 from 3. And unlike LeBron , he actually did a decent job on Luka when switched off on him.
On the defensive side of the ball I thought all 4 of the kids were great and their rotations are becoming better every game. Offensively it was a mixed bag. Austin continues to struggle and shot his way to a seat on the bench. Malik was 3 for 6 from 3 which was great but he caught a bad case of Russitis and missed 3 layups. THT was 3 for 6 but missed both of his 3’s. Stanley actually was the most efficient going 3 for 4 from 3.
Watching LeBron at 37 makes me wonder if we really want him to sign that extension. If this LeBron at 37 what will he look like at 39 when that nearly 50 mil contract kicks in. LeBron’s effectiveness will require a lot more help and I’m not convinced that we have the assets to provide it.
-
One and a half quarters has been our M.O. all season long. Hasn’t cut it for most of the season, hence our record.
I gave up trying to figure out what can fix this team when I came to the conclusion that age cannot be fixed. Not by a rotational change, not by a scheme and not by post-game comments for certain. I believe the will is there, this team simply lacks the gas.
It’s why Russ’ comments the other day to the point of the game plan is go hard at us and let the chips fall where they may. It’s a valid observation and a great strategy. Because we’re old. It’s why not keeping Caruso and choosing DeAndre Jordan as our 2nd back up big have been so completely detrimental to everything this team hoped to accomplish.
LeBron can’t be the two way guy, not anymore, probably not even in the playoffs. He needs elite defenders and guys who aren’t going to shirk from the moment. All these minutes at the 5 are wearing him down because he HAS to be involved on defense. 5 years ago he probably could have done it and won the MVP going away. At 37? Well, we’re seeing how possible that isn’t in real time.
Frank has resorted to the most desperate tactics…except the one that makes the most sense to me. Play the kids more, it’s not like they’re junking up our chances of winning because we’re just not winning. Too many old dudes on the roster gave Frank too few options early, Nunn not playing all season hurt more than I think we all realized since his deal was the 2nd biggest cost move we made after re-signing THT.
But now? This choice to go old down the stretch of games i mind-boggling, especially when you see the offensive possession stall out at the top of the key, some meaningless passes around the perimeter and shitty shot a little while later. Frank has always been a mediocre, at best, offensive coach but even he has to be able to see how bad this has gotten.
Hence I expect him to be gone. But I won’t guarantee it’ll happen because, well, anything is possible.
-
Not sure why anyone thought LBJ would carry the Lakers at age 37, 38, 39. I didn’t after 2020, which was GREAT! He is a great player still, but like the Beatles sang, “Help, I need somebody, help!” He got ZERO this year!

Thanks, guys. I didn’t watch the game last night so I appreciate all the info you all are putting in here. It made me feel like I have a good idea of what went on.
The only thing helping me at this point during this season from hell is that I have accepted the fact that if you are expecting to be disappointed then you won’t be disappointed. I am not expecting anything good from this team for the rest of the season so I am at peace with reality.
My only pain is knowing my wish for the team to win a championship for Melo won’t come to fruition. He deserves one in his career and having one with the Lakers would make me happy for him. Thank you all for the recap.

Aloha, Michael,
Watching LeBron since the break has been discouraging. At times, he’s looked washed and uninterested. Is it the injured knee or is it Father Time finally catching up with the King? That’s going to become a question that’s asked more and more as this season painfully ends and we prepare for what coud be a franchise-defining summer for the Lakers.
It’s hard for me to understand LeBron’s reluctance to take time off, even a week, to let the knee rest and recover. While I expected LeBron to announce at some point that he’s shutting it down for the season, Bron says he’s not going to sit and still thinks the Lakers have a puncher’s chance of winning everything.
In the end, it really comes down to two questions: (1) Can the Lakers build a championship team this summer? (2) And if not, should they then trade LeBron as well as Russ or maybe even go all the way and trade AD? The article I wrote explored what most would consider to be a biased set of trades for Russ, LeBron, and AD but the team we could build is actually very impressive as Lakers get eight elite players and a net of 2 first round picks for their superstar big three.
Personally, I like the idea of trading Russ and LeBron and keeping and building around AD but that might not be possible because of Klutch. Anyway, I still think the smart move by the Lakers is to go all-in this summer to build a team that could legitimately contend the next two years. While LeBron may not be able to carry a team like he used to do, I still believe he can still be the catalyst to help the Lakers win #18.

It appears that the Lakers are trading one DJ for another. They are waiving Deandre and signing DJ Augustin. The dude can play some. He will definitely take some of Westbrooks minutes. Wish a 3 and D wing with size would shake free but those are in high demand. Not expecting any of them being bought out.
-
That’s some very good news for me personally. I have always wanted DJ Augustin for a long time now, just the same way I wanted Reggie Jackson. Unfortunately, my last memory of DA Jordan as a Laker would be the turnover he committed last night by heaving the ball into the stands ( errant lob pass?). Wish him all the best. Augustin is definitely a valuable addition and a favorite of mine.

Aloha,
The latest rumor circulating around the LeBron and the Lakers saga is that LeBron wants Sam Presti to replace Rob. Who knows if that’s true, but he certainly went out of way to praise Presti. While he might be an upgrade it really demonstrates how out of touch he is with basketball matters when it doesn’t involve action on the court.
From my view point Presti is the most overrated GM in the NBA.
Sure he drafted well but let me ask this. When the Trailblazers decided to draft Greg Oden, leaving Durant sitting there, how hard was that decision? I’m mean is there a amateur Lakerholic who wouldn’t do the same? And when the Griz passed on Harden for Thabeet, how hard was that? Is Sam Presti skilled or just lucky? It’s mid to late first round, 2nd round and undrafted players where the skill lays.Presti had KD, Russ, Harden, and Ibaka and only made one finals appearance. He was never able to put a good supporting cast around them, and traded Harden, although that may have been the owner’s call to avoid paying him.
This is just another reason I really don’t care for GM LeBron. He needs a Gam skilled at putting a supporting cast around him, not a guy who had good fortune in the draft. Give me the Warriors front office any day. They built their core without a top 3 pick. Presti had 3 of them, found Green in the 2nd and constantly built a quality supporting cast. No wonder KD left for the Warriors.
-
Oh, I forgot to mention he had Westbrook, Pg and Steven Adams, along with Melo for one year. They won 48 and 49 games in the two seasons and lost in the first round each year. Again it’s apparent why PG wanted out. It’s interesting that Russ was part of both of OKC’s high profile squads.
-
LMAO. Come on, Michael. You know that was a baseless rumor from an unnamed front office person that was the result of LeBron praising Presti and people jumping on that as a slight to Rob at the least and proof LeBron wanted Sam as GM at the most outrageous. Nothing there and you know it.
-
There will be plenty of scuttlebutt from here in out unless we start putting up Ws. LeBron did himself no favors over the ASB, Frank hasn’t done himself a favor all season with all his weird rotation choices, and so on. Some things have been out of our control but the team’s energy has been bad all season long. We’ve underwhelmed at every opportunity. That’s why it’s hard for me to see a big turnaround. Like…what would change that suddenly we just start playing with better energy? If I thought firing Frank would fix that I’d back it right away. It’s just I don’t think he’s the reason. I think we’ve maxed out the roster.

Aloha,
Watching last nights game provided another reminder that in most cases, big three’s are fools gold, especially when the 3 are all super max players. Consider this, Morris, Kennard, Jackson, Batum, Mann and Harteinstein all cost less then Russ. Having the depth and mid range contracts also allowed the Clippers to trade for Powell and Covington. We complain that the Lakers don’t spend enough but the Clippers did all of this by only spending 4 mil more than the Lakers. The Clips not only beat us but are now at 500 with their equivalent of AD and LeBron out. Of course it also doesn’t help when one of your big 3 isn’t playing anywhere near his pay grade. The Clippers also demonstrated the benefits of a little continuity which the Lakers haven’t had since LeBron arrived.
Unfortunately it really won’t matter much what we do this summer. If the Clippers are healthy next year, they could be the best team in the West. The Suns will be better. As will the Warriors, and the Griz. The talk of course is trading Russ, which we should. But the best case scenario would be say, landing Brogdon and Buddy from the Pacers, and that’s hardly a lock, it’s more like the Pacers last resort trade.
It’s extremely difficult to build a big 3 and Rob was foolish to try with the assets we had. 11 minimum contracts is not going to win a championship. 3 of our “big” free agent signings sat on the pine last night.
So what can be done this summer? I would still pursue a Russ trade and see if we can pull off something like the Pacers example. After that? Hope. Hope that we can keep Malik. Hope that Nunn is healthy and opts in. After do not trade THT, Austin or Stanley. Here is something new, develop them. THT is starting to get. He is now having more good games than bad, especially on defense where he has been very good. Austin is growing defensively and is cool under pressure. And Stanley’s defense is very good, not every guy in a rotation has to be a scorer. That would give us a core. It’s the young players stepping up that has been fueling us. Money will be tight this summer and some talent will trickle down. It would be very nice to target a few younger guys this time.
I know it’s always “don’t waste Lebrons remaining years” but we did this year with poor roster construction designs to “win now”. I just don’t see any moves that could elevate us into true contenders. I think we should be aiming for the following year when we may have some cap space. Develop the kids so they are ready when the cap space opens up. If win now is impossible, than win the following year is the best option.
-
Aloha, Michael,
This season has convinced me that two superstars with a better starting lineup and deeper bench is better than three superstars.
The problem is multi-fold.
First, it’s hard to find three superstars whose personalities mesh as the Brooklyn Nets discovered this season.
Second, it’s hard to find three superstars who’s talents complement each other as the Lakers have found with Russ this season.
Third, paying for three superstars handicaps the team when it comes to improving the rest of the roster via free agency or trade. You basically don’t have any trading chips or cap space.
The only Lakers player we differ on is THT, whom I think will never be a good enough shooter or defender to be a good fit on this team. Only reason he could be kept is we can’t get value for him.
Otherwise, we do need to give all of the kids more minutes and more important roles. it’s the only way this team gets better quicky and sets the stage for long-term growth. Monk, Reaves, Johnson, and THT need to play big minutes.
Only other change I think we need to make soon is firing Frank Vogel. There’s no way he’s going to be the coach next season so why wait. Make Handy interim with instructions to play the right players. Then start a search for the next head coach now rather than trying to do that at the same time they’re building the roster. We’ve aready seen how having a coach who doesn’t agree with roster doesn’t really work.
-
I’ve never been one for team-building via slogans. Haven’t really been a proponent of multiple ball dominant stars on the same team since the NBA vetoed the trade for Chris Paul, which I thought then was a terrible deal. Kobe doesn’t need Chris just like LeBron doesn’t need Russ. It’s reverse logic that just about always backfires.
The only time’s it has worked is when all three take less than the max. Boston (Pierce, Garnet, Allen) and Miami (James, Wade, Bosh) are really the only two examples that come to mind. A big 2 with a solid roster around them is a much better way. Wish we had run it back from last season since that team made the playin without a lot of AD and LBJ. Could have used Dennis as a S&T, taken the hard cap hit like the season before, and seen what Trezz wanted to do (he would have opted in).
Anyhow, not sure we end up keeping all the young guys. I like the idea of continuing to develop them but I think Reaves is going to need to be used to move Russ. Since we have no picks of relevance Reaves is essentially a late first rounder/early second rounder right now. Who knows if he can take a step forward but if a team needs to have him included to make a Russ deal happen (and it’s a good trade, not some for John Wall BS) I can’t see a way to legitimize holding onto Austin at that point.
THT… Man, I dunno. I think he’s our most trade worthy player, honestly just because he shows some promise now and then. That’s the issue for me, though. I would rather have a guy who you can count on on defense every night and if he scores more than 10 well that’s just peachy. I don’t need volume three point shooters, or even guys who can hit the three above 35%, at every position. We need so much more than scoring right now.
Bottom line, I don’t even consider AD untouchable this summer. Honestly, if a good deal for James came down the pike I’d consider it. There’s no way to look at this season other than an epic disappointment. Thus, because the only things we have to work with are three max salaries and some role-players who have yet to define themselves in the NBA, I really don’t see anything as being off the table. The Lakers need to do right by the franchise. It should be the first priority this off-season.
-
My biggest fear is a panic trade. Russ was one and look where it got us. I wouldn’t even move Russ just to move him. It really has to upgrade our roster. We will have to give up picks so it better be for a few players that can impact our chances. And please no over 30 with a resume that’s is on the way down. I like the idea of developing the the kids because we need young legs that play with energy. I really don’t see how much value we can get in a trade. And if we include any of them to move Russ, we better receive some players back that can elevate us. I would rather hold on to young talent and live with their mistakes, than vets with marginal effect. As for THT, while his offense has been up and down it is trending in the right direction and I have felt his defense has been pretty solid for a month now. If he finishes as good or better than he has recently, we better be getting quality back for him. I I just don’t see any moves with our available assets of having a huge impact. If we can’t find deals that can make us true contenders than I would prefer to hold onto our assets until 2023 when some cap space opens up.
-
That’s fair but I think that, outside of Russ declining his PO for some reason we’re going to need to move him. Let’s say for a second that we truly roll it back in terms of anyone not on a vet minimum deal. That’s James, Russ, AD, THT, Nunn, Johnson and Reaves. That’s only 1/2 a team. Now let’s just allow ourselves to indulge in a reality where Monk re-ups with us for whatever our MLE is (I think we can offer him 5.5/6 mil this summer). OK, now we’re 6 vet minimum contracts away from the league roster minimum. To me that looks like the exact same boat we’re in now. Hoping THT takes a step, praying LBJ and AD can stay on the court, and thinking that the same talent level of ring chasers comes our way. We’re just going to be old and slow, again.
Rob needs to figure out something, it may cost us Reaves, THT or allowing Monk to sign into someone else’s cap space for an exception we can use to sign a different player but we’re going to need to get ridiculously creative this summer.

I’ve always liked playing against better teams when you need to get your game together to have to do it against better competition. Great teams always need great competition.
I loved how the team played tonight. The offense was elite, the balance between threes and points-in-the-paint was perfect. Just like against the Raptors and the first three quarters against the Wizards, the Lakers played like a team that could complete.
Wednesday’s game will be a challenge. Going to need Dwight to be better and the entire team to come out again and play like champions. We have now won 2 of 3 for first time since Feb 5.
