    Aloha,
Trade details (expected to be done this afternoon):

    Lakers receive:
    – Rui Hachimura

    Wizards receive:
    – Kendrick Nunn
    – 3 second round picks.

This is a good trade. Rui is a young combo forward with size. He can score and rebound. Defensively he is a work in progress but we have a great development staff. I like him much better than Cam because he actually plays.

    Finally a trade

    • This is the kind of trade that makes sense. He is already good enough to contribute to this years team and he has a lot of upside. He has size and shoots the 3. Best of all we will have bird rights. He cap hold will only be 8 mil so we can fill out the roster and go over the cap.

      • Two of the three 2nd rounders are distant one. We still will have our own 2nd this year.

      • Hi, Michael. It was just yesterday that you stated “For me, the wing with size and rebounding should be our goal.”

We got a wing with size that could shoot both the 3 and midrange shots in Hachimura. Now we have to go get a rebounder and check both boxes. I applaud you for having that vision. This is a great move by Rob. Let’s see what else he got up his sleeve.

        • Actually Bubba, he is a decent. He has averaged 5 a game in 27 minutes for his career. For context, KD averages 6.7 per 36 minutes and PG averages 6 per 33 minutes. So he is right in line for a wing.

    • Really like this trade. Didn’t give up a whole lot and got a young dude with some upside & potential.

    • Excellent move for Rob to pop his cherry. Rui is young, big, and can shoot.

    • This makes sense from multiple angles. Did not give up a FRP, did add size and shooting, shipped out a little-used player for one that could take minutes away from some of our own guys.

    Aloha,

When I looked at the schedule I thought that the Griz were the team that we had the worst chance of beating with our injury issues. After all they were finally healthy and they were the hottest team in the NBA. Up to the steal by Dennis I thought we were going to lose. But we pulled it out.

This team plays incredibly hard. And that is a testimony to coach Hamm. Sure he’s made some mistakes but he has held this team together through all the adversity. If we had been even reasonably healthy, along with decent refereeing, our record would be reversed and we would be one of the top 6 seeds.

With the trade season in full swing, all the click bait posters have a variety of players for us to consider. And they generally are all geared towards the offensive side of the ball. Yet we are 7th in the NBA in scoring. Many of these articles have 3 point shooters as targets, as we are 27th in the league.

But there are reasons for that. First we were shooting around 22% over our first 15 games. Now we are up to 33%. Our biggest problem is who is shooting the 3. LeBron and Russ take 11 of our 30 threes a game. And they are combined 29%. LeBron is actually last in the NBA. Yes even worse than Russ. Take out those 2 and the rest of the team is shooting 36%. Good enough.

When you consider how we run our offense, would adding a 3 point sniper help that much. We rarely set up plays for a 3 point shot. Our 3’s are generated through drive and kicks and the open man takes the shot, regardless of how well they shoot 3’s.

Our biggest need was on full display against the Griz. We desperately need a wing with size that can defend and rebound. We generally get crushed on the offensive boards with our small line ups. And if that wing can hit a 3, that is a bonus. Bogdanovic is a popular name. But how many shots would he actually get with the way we play. Defensively his on only fair and is getting a mere 3 boards a game.

For me the wing with size and rebounding should be our goal. The only question will that guy become available. My feeling is, if one doesn’t surface, I would hold onto my assets because there will be a few available in free agency this summer. While if we were healthy I feel we would be pretty good, I don’t see a realistic game changing trade in this sellers market. The worst thing this team could do is make a trade that could keep us mediocre for years to come.

    What do we need?

    • “For me, the wing with size and rebounding should be our goal.”

Yes Sir! Those are the words of the day. Thank you, Michael.

    • Me likes Bojan and Miles.

      • You are like Tom DJ. You don’t look at the whole picture. As the first option playing 31 minutes Bojon takes 5.9 3’s a game, makes 2.4 a game at 41%. He gets 3.6 rebounds a game and isn’t a great defender. How many 3’s do you think gets gets in this offense as the 3rd option? Lonnie is our current 3rd option. He takes 5.4 threes a game. He makes 2.1 a game 38% with 29 minutes a game. Troy averages 3.9 rebounds a game in 22 minutes. And he’s a better defender then Bojon, so is giving up a first round pick worth a 3rd option that makes .3 more 3’s a game and is not as good on defense or rebounding then Troy? I feel a wing with size that can rebound and defend is more valuable than that. Plus he is owed 19 mil next year, which limits what we can do in free agency.

    • My only hope is that we don’t trade young dudes or draft picks for anyone over 30 thinking they’ll help us make a run in the playoffs (we aint making a run). Time to roll up our sleeves and actually build a balanced roster. Kick Rob upstairs (they aint gonna fire him) and let the Buss boys do the heavy lifting.

    Aloha,

The news coming out of the Lakers camp is sound. It makes perfect sense to look for trades that will make them competitive for the next 3 years. Unfortunately it’s for the wrong reason. First, thinking we can land a super star this summer for what we have to offer is boneheaded. If LeBron falls for that he isn’t as bright as I think he is.

Now let’s assume Robb does pull a rabbit out of hat and secures a superstar. Will that make us true contenders? Hardly. Three superstars and a collection of minimum contract guys year in and year out won’t cut it. A team needs a strong supporting cast and some semblance of continuity to win a championship. Especially if your superstars are as fragile as AD and LeBron. Oh by the way the article mentioned Lillard and Beal, both of which are as fragile as our stars.

For me the perfect trade would be for a 3 and D wing with size under a reasonable contract. Kuz would be a good example of that. His cap hold would still allow us to add around 20 mil in free agents.

My perfect trade would be for OG Anunoby. His salary will be around 18 mil next year, allowing us to add a couple of decent free agents. Although the way he is playing he is probably out of our price range, even with both picks, which I would give up for him.

We could added several quality free agents this summer with our cap space. The worst thing we could do from a team building standpoint would be to bring back contracts for players that wouldn’t really make a difference. I would love to win another ring before LeBron leaves but the wrong trade could end any chance of that.

    • Aloha, Michael,

I agree with you that it’s foolish for the Lakers to pursue a third superstar. Not only does that make it near impossible to build a deep and talented roster but, even with three draft picks to offer on Draft Day, the Lakers don’t have the trade capital to match what other teams could offer for LaVine or Beal.

On the other hand, I think the Lakers should have excellent trade opportunities as we get closer to the trade deadline. The big difference is we’re past the half-way point, which means teams taking on Russell Westbrook’s contract only have to cover half of his $47 million expiring contract. While teams may have wanted one pick to take on Russ’ full contract last summer, there should be no reason now for teams to expect compensation for just taking on the $27.5 million for the half of year left.

Basically, the Lakers can offer two packages: one that includes Westbrook Jones, and one pick and one that includes $24.7 million in expiring contracts of Beverley, Walker, Nunn, and Toscano-Anderson. Each of these trades should include just one unprotected first round draft pick. They may need to add a young player like Reaves or Christie or additional second round picks but if they make the picks unprotected, they should be able to rebuild the roster to championship caliber.

      • Let us remember LBJ brought us a TITLE 2020 after 10 years of nothing, but watching Dear Kobe! Just like he said he would, same for Cavs and Heat.

    Aloha,

Yes we lost another game we should have won at the free throw line. But tomorrow when the NBA two minute report comes out it will say that Troy was fouled at the end of regulation. What really upset me it was blatant and the ref was 5 feet away. The report will also say that LeBron was fouled at the end of overtime. It’s shame to lose because two obvious fouls were not called.

I do like the way this team plays. It gives me hope that if we ever are healthy we may be able to put a run together. I particularly liked Gabriel’s game. 14 pts 7 boards and 2 blocks plus some really good defense. The guy can guard the 3. I would rather see him starting over JTA.

    Aloha,

Saw a report today that besides Boogey the Lakers are also working out Myers’s Leonard. WTF? I have watched several G league games this year. And Jay Huff of the South Bay Lakers has impressed each time. He blocked 6 shots Las night. His season high is 7. He once blocked 10 for U Virginia. He also shoots the 3. I would like to give him a shot over a guy like Myers’s.

    • There’s no one out there who will make a difference. It’s just 10- day season.

    • Michael, I am glad you brought up Jay Huff. I am a big fan of his but I have no clue why the Lakers are not giving him a chance. He is too good for the G-League, and as you said, he can shoot the 3. He also rebounds well and can block shots. Honestly, I get upset not seeing him get a chance. Could there be something else that they know that we are not aware of? And how long can he be in the G-League before somebody snatches him away?

      • When rosters expand they’ll bring up a couple g leaguers, this is 10 day tryout season and since there’s no guarantee AD won’t have another stress reaction (seeing as it’s caused by running and jumping which Tom so eloquently poo-pooed a week ago) this is my guess as to why we’re auditioning centers. It’ could be, but is highly unlikely, to be a part of some epic trade. They know AD could go the rest of the season or part of a quarter. No way to know. If it does flare up again that should be surgery time.

    Aloha,

With so few players currently on the trade block I think the main reason you are not seeing any movement is price. The question for the Lakers and every other team looking to upgrade is how much are you willing to over pay for a player. Frankly the asking price for any available player is currently outrageous. And with so many teams clinging to playoff hope it will probably remain outrageous until the deadline. The Lakers need to hope they can get healthy and hang in there until prices drop, or a useful player lands on the buy out market. Our best bet for our play off hopes until February 7th is if role players continue to play at a high level.

    • With Thomas we may be able to keep AD’s minutes down to 33/ 34 a game with Thomas at center. And then maybe another 10 to 15 together. It could benefit LeBron as well. Another plus maybe Gabriel. He defend all thre positions so he could get minute against long wings. How it looks when AD returns will determine some of what we do this summer.

    • I will be the first one to say I did not see the West being this upI for grabs. Phoenix is maybe not surprisingly imploding. Minny has been beset with injuries like were last season. Despite that God-awful start this team is gritting it’s way into contention.

    • The biggest surprise for me is the downward spiral of the Clippers. I don’t know what their problem is but I do know if Frank Vogel had been the head coach he would have been shown the door.

    • And the Nets win (LOSE) KD down 2 weeks, Father Time is catching up, lol.

    • Very interesting stats. I am one of those who would like to see AD play with Thomas Bryant together. That, to me, would be a heck of a lineup.

    • Bryant is hustling his a$$ off for the team, for his next deal, and possibly to help return the Lakers to relevance. AD was playing like an MVP the difference is TB gets a lot of his production off of pure hustle and effort. He doesn’t get the same leeway Davis does where they’ll dump the ball in while he’s near or on the block and he goes to work. Nor should they with Thomas, he’s a P&R guards dream. He pick and pops 5’ out to the three, he has great hands, he’s more athletic than he looks and he has a quiet strength and toughness.

That’s why I think they could play well together with neither being crowded out. Put TB and 1 of 3 players in the P&R and kick it out to AD for three as the D collapses. Put TB on the strong side w/AD and the ball and let him work the glass. Either player should pull the defense that step out you want to get better driving lanes.

My biggest fear is coach Ham sending him back to the bench and getting too small and/or slow. Bryant keeps up with Russ and Schröder better and more ably than AD and is also better at getying back. Questions about his D have been answered and heres a news flash: he’s not perfect! Few are, especially for the vet min. He’s quickly turned jnto one of the “have to keep” players on the team.

      • You and I see the same situation with Thomas, Jamie. Guy is great on offense, so-so on defense. I would like to experiment with him in the starting lineup with AD. There are certain teams where the two bigs could be a great option for us and playing with AD would help cover Thomas’ liabilities on that side. Ideally, our backup center shoud be a rim protector. Also depends on whom we get to start at the three.

I think keeping Thomas is more important than Walker. TB’s size and hustle have a bigger impact and hopefully we can find a way to keep him for the MLE or via cap space if we keep Russ, which is another of those impossible to predict situations on this Lakers team. The last five games, Russ has been the Lakers best player as far as NetRtg and Plus/Minus. Russ even had 46 turnovers to just 22 rurnover for 2.1:1 A/TO ratio.

        • I think he’s average to a little above average on D. He doesn’t produce a lot of blocks or steals, true, but he’s stout and an excellent rebounder which is just as good. I think he’s the biggest reason this 5 gamer has come to be. He’s had a double-double in all of them, I think. He and D Schröder shooting lights out.

    • The Russ/LeBron pick and roll is everything we wanted the LeBron/AD pick and roll to be.

      • Thomas has shown this ability before. What’s changed for him is he has found a team that plays as fast as he does. His defense is a bit over blown. Our biggest defensive problem is our small 3 guard line ups where guys just shoot over us. If we could find a decent sized 3 to replace PatBev in starting line up that would do more for us. Even starting Troy again would help. Not sure I’d starting Thomas with AD would be the answer considering LeBron only plays defense in spurts. I can’t blame him, at 38 I don’t think he can do both anymore.

        • The defense is a huge issue. A few weeks ago on one of the podcast after AD went down I said I thought the Lakers had to choose to be excellent on one end of the floor and that they should choose offense. It feels like they actually made that choice. It’s the right one. Let Russ and Schröder lead the way. Those 2 and TB are a legit, regular season, option.

    • I wouldn’t make a trade for anything other than a forward with size. We don’t need guard or center help.

      • Michael, I agree with both you and Jamie. Thomas Bryant has been a revelation. The reason why I am not surprised by his performance is that I have been following him while he was with the Wizards. He is a keeper in my opinion.

    Aloha,

Like I posted before, I never believed this team was not as bad as their early record. We competed even when losing. I thought the ceiling for this team was perhaps playin or 6th seed tops, with a first round exit. Then a funny thing happened, even with all the injuries we have went 17-11 since the bad start. And we have went toe to toe with some of the best teams in the league.

Could this stretch change the front offices mind about giving up a 1st round pick? Yes, I think it could. But not the huge block buster trade that everyone was looking for. Because honestly we don’t need that.

First I have went from trade Russ to keep Russ. And I think they will now. He is playing again at an all star level. He is one of the reasons we are where we are. Will he turn in an occasional bone head play? Absolutely. But he has been a driving force in this run. If you have noticed, LeBron and Russ have finally learned to play with each other. LeBron defers to Russ a lot now and their pick and roll has been deadly.

Thomas Bryant is also playing at an all star level. Once AD returns, they have to find this guy 25 minutes or more a game. This can happen by playing them together when LeBron rests. LeBron mused about the 3 playing together and maybe they should try it if they can’t find a trade for a sF but Lebrons defense has not been great. If LeBron could defend the 3 in 5 to 7 minute bursts. Maybe.

Dennis has also been playing at an all star level. I had heard the rave reviews of of his Euro championship tournament and now we are seeing why. His numbers will go down some if we ever get healthy but he needs to maintain his aggressive play and it’s better then trading for someone else. It’s a shame he missed the first month, we might have a few more wins.

Once everyone is back we could have a solid rotation. Still we are one guy away from making some real noise in the playoffs. Unfortunately that one guy is a wing with size, that’s something everyone covets. But there are targets.

If you have read my posts you know I’m a big OG Anunoby fan. Of all the players rumored to be available, he is the only one I would give up both 1st round picks for. And that’s what it would take. He is playing all NBA level defense and he is a good shooter as well. The bonus is he is under contract at 18 mil for 2 more years. And at 25 he would still be in his prime when that 2027 pick rolled around. It’s the old bird in the hand scenario. Unfortunately he would probably cost us Lonnie as well, but he’s worth it.

Bogdanovic 3 point shooting would go a long way in helping this team. While he isn’t a lock down defender, he is smart and is serviceable on that end. He would also cost a first and possibly Lonnie as well.

We all know and love Kuz. He would bring size and defense on the wing that we lack. My only problem with Kuz is that he is in a contract year. While I don’t believe he has any animosity towards the Lakers and I think he enjoyed being a Laker, he has talked glowingly about his expanded role with the Wizards. He likes being the number 2 option and showing what he can do. I’m not sure he would resign with the Lakers this summer but that would be a must if we were going to spend a first rounder on him.

With the way the others have been playing, and if we are healthy anyone of these 3 could give us a real chance of making some noise in the playoffs.

    One player away?

While I don’t believe he has any animosity towards the Lakers and I think he enjoyed being a Laker, he has talked glowingly about his expanded role with the Wizards. He likes being the number 2 option and showing what he can do. I’m not sure he would resign with the Lakers this summer but that would be a must if we were going to spend a first rounder on him.

With the way the others have been playing, and if we are healthy anyone of these 3 could give us a real chance of making some noise in the playoffs.

    • Good post, Michael. I’d give up both picks for Anunoby too. I think either he or Bojan would be difference makers. Doubt Pelinka would have the balls to make that trade though.

Odd as it might be, I’m also now thinking Lakers may decide to keep Russ. Every game, there are a dozen shots, assists, blocks, or steals that no other guard in the league could make. What really swung me around was the physical defense Russ has been playing.

LeBron and Russ functioning as the Lakers point guards running pick and rolls with Davis and Bryant is rapidly becoming unstoppable. Add an Anunoby, Bogdanovic, or Turner and this team is a legitimate contender.

    • @Micheal

“First I have went from trade Russ to keep Russ. And I think they will now. He is playing again at an all star level. He is one of the reasons we are where we are.”

I have said before, he is the engine that propels this team. Last year, he, Lebron and AD only played in 21 games and there was no chemistry to be had.

At this point I am getting the feeling that this team should be given a chance to gel more. They have been playing hard even in losses. The emergence Thomas Bryant and Dennis Schroeder plus the rest of the supporting cast will only serve as a warning to any team out there.

Of course little trades here and there would be more than welcome, but care should be taken not to mess with the synergy being developed.

    Aloha,

Another fun game to watch. So how do win without AD, Austin, Lonnie and Troy? Well you have 3 guys in Thomas, Dennis and Russ are playing like all stars to add to LeBron’s stellar play. No defense but it was the 2nd of a back to back.

It will be interesting to see how they use Thomas when AD comes back. I don’t know if I would want to start him with AD, primarily because LeBron not great defending the wing anymore. But they definitely should play them together when LeBron rests. And of course he will give AD plenty of rest as well.

And Dennis is just scorching hot right. I never saw any of the Euro tournament but he was tearing it up and he’s playing like it again. It’s a shame he missed the first month. We may have a few more wins.

Now if we can just keep it going until we can start getting guys back, this can be a pretty good squad.

    • To use a food analogy, you can’t make barbecue in a microwave.

    • This team is like a box of Chocolates. You really never know what you’ll get game to game. Well, if they can keep it up, they probably won’t have an MVP, but MIP and 6MOY could be in store. Maybe the trade chatter will die down some if they can get and stay in the playin/playoff hunt.

Can’t say why they stunk it up so bad at the start of the season. New players, new system. Lebron looking like the decline was real, and in year 20, who can really be surprised? He’s still elite, but the outside shot is lacking. Seemed like a bunch of mismatched parts playing at career lows outside of AD, and when his typically injury hits, seemed like they were sunk. They’re showing some heart. Guys keep playing like this and there’ll be some tough decisions to make come the offseason.

Even Russ has shot decently and the boneheaded plays have somewhat subsided. Contract year bump? Could be.

Bryant playing like a max guy. Shroeder playing like a guy who should’ve turned down 4/84. Lebron looking like he still could be 2nd team All-NBA. Even Nunn showing some signs of life. Once Walker, Reeves, and AD get back, you’ll have a too many guys problem.

As we approach the midway mark, there’s certainly more reason for hope than they had at the quarter pole. Hopefully they can keep this level of play up. Keep AD healthy and let everyone else round into peak form, and they maybe could make some playoff noise.

    Aloha,

The last couple of games have been a pleasure to watch. It kind of reminds me of watching the baby Lakers before LeBron. This team is playing incredibly hard from the vets down to 19 year old Max they are a joy to watch.

I never believed this team was as bad as its record. It took a perfect storm of this being a brand new team, a tough opening schedule, LeBron missing time early and an inexplicable team wide shooting slump to land us at 2-10. We are more like our record since then.

I have said all along that would be up to the others to determine how far this team could go and the others have been stepping up. And you knew the shooting would improve. While no one is a sniper they were much better career shooters than they demonstrated early.

You have to start with Thomas Bryant. Since he stepped in for AD in that Denver game he has been averaging 16.25 points, 9.9 rebounds. He is shooting over 50% from 3 and over 70% from the field. In only 28 minutes. That’s better than all but a few starting center in the league. This team needs to run to be successful. There are not many centers that run the floor better than AD. Thomas is one of them. Maybe the only one.

Then look at Austin who is the kind of glue guy every successful team needs. Lonnie has had more ups than downs. He had been playing hurt for awhile and they are finally resting him, which is smart.

Dennis is now playing how Rob hoped he would. Russ is a leading 6th man candidate and guys like Gabriel, Brown Jr and JTA play with a ton of energy. We have even seen the Heat version of Nunn the last few games and the T-Wolves version of PatBev.

This has led me to believe if we could solve our small forward problem and with reasonable health we could be pretty good. Now maybe not championship good, the parity in the west is an illusion, created by more key injuries to important players than I can remember. There are several teams if healthy would beat us, even with an upgrade at the 3. And a miracle block buster trade is not going to happen.

Still my wish is to build a contender as soon as possible and if we play our cards right it could be next year. Money will be a problem but if we found a 3 and D wing on a reasonable contract would go a long way in that direction. OG Anunoby would be the perfect guy and I would give up both 1st round picks for him and Lonnie for himZ He is an elite 3 and D guy. While as late as last year he was on the block, he had been playing so well that they may not trade him. And he is under contract for 18 mil. Plus he would actually still be in his prime when the 2027 pick is due. As they say a bird in the hand…

This next year might be the year it’s worth staying under the tax apron that being estimated to be around 162 mil. If we did that not only would we have 35 mil in cap space but a full MLE and a bi annual exception to use. That’s why I’m against bring back long term salary except for a guy like OG.

While we will not be able to keep everyone we have bird rights on Austin, early bird rights on both Gabriel and Nunn. I would love to keep several players. There is Thomas, Dennis, Lonnie, and Troy all would be great to keep. We have bird right with Russ as well but he is playing well and will probably receive better offers then I would be willing to give him.

The rest of the year will give us a better idea of the guys we should try to keep. And if they all play their way out of our budget at least we might make a little noise in the playoffs.

    Finally a little fun

    • Too early for evaluations of anyone, cept LBJ, IMHO.

      • Maybe for some but not everyone. Thomas is returning to pre injury form. We already knew what his abilities were. What makes him even better with the Lakers is they play at a pace that he excels at. The Wizards were not a running team.

As for Dennis he has shown this ability in the past. A former 6th man of the year. His first year with us was rough because of injuries and it does take time to learn to play with LeBron. I actually wish we had kept him at a reasonable salary and not brought in Russ.

Austin has shown me enough to believe he’s a keeper. He’s a glue guy that all good teams need.

And Gabriel plays so hard that he will be worth it to keep because he won’t demand a lot of money. And a low cost energy guys is something every bench needs.

    • You’re so right, Michael. It’s been a while since I could relax during a Lakers game. Quite a pleasurable feeling I’d like to enjoy more often.

    • “Finally A Little Fun”

Yes, a little fun indeed. I totally agree with your takes in this article, Michael. Fun to read.

LeBron had one of his best games as a Laker and it’s been well documented in the press. Thomas and Russ both had great games and that was praised to. But there was one little thing I noticed that didn’t receive much mention. With Austin struggling coach Ham went away from him and PatBev, especially in the 4th and turned to Troy and JTA both 6’ 6” wings and it really worked on the defensive end. And it helped that JTA hit a couple of shots as well. PatBev is a pesky defender but JTA and Troys size really helped us on defense and the boards. They got boards 8 between them but just as important kept the ball alive for Thomas to snag. 17 rebounds to be exact. I am really hoping we see more of them going forward because our 3 and guard line ups are just too small.

    Aloha,

I just read another article about unhappy LeBron. I have zero sympathy for him. He is a billionaire that makes around a 100 mil in endorsements a year. If he is truly the winner and that’s what he’s about he could have signed a new deal in the 30 mil range. That would have given us about 53 mil in cap space. And if wanted to be traded? It’s a lot easier to trade 30 mil than nearly 50 mil. You can sign several quality players with 53 mil. He also is partially responsible for the Russ fiasco as well. No sympathy and I tire from his whining.

    • Who dat built a School with College Scholarships? Who Dat B? Kryrie, KD, Joker, Steph, AD, Kareem, Magic, Michael, Joel, Giannis………………………………………………….? We also went Ringless for 10 freaking years till LBJ.

      • Yep and now the window is shut for another ring. You need a quality supporting cast to win another ring. There is not a trade out there that can do that.

        • There are deals that would make the Lakers contenders but none that they appear willing to make. It’s all about whether L.A. will make the picks unprotected.

          • There really isn’t. Trade machine fantasy without taking under consideration what the other team wants in return or what competing teams have to offer.

        • LeBron starting a school has nothing to do with him being a terrible shadow GM. He has always pressured trades that were bad for the team. Then he bales. That’s his pattern. And it looks like it will happen here.

    • It’s not LeBron whom you should be pissed at, Michael. It’s Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka. They’re the real culprits.

The problem with the Lakers right now is not LeBron James or Anthony Davis, It’s the dysfunctional and visionless Lakers ownership and front office and the terrible rosters they have doomed LeBron and AD to the last three seasons.

If you think it’s hard to surround LeBron and AD with size, shooting, and defense, then imagine how hard that’s going to be from scratch if you trade LeBron and AD. All that does is open huge doors for Rob and Jeanie and the crew to screw up more.

Lakers need to bite the bullet and trade Russ and the picks for players who are good fits with or without LeBron and AD. You can’t expect to win by surrounding them with a bunch of small point guard who can’t shoot or defend.

      • I think it’s fair to be pissed at all of ‘em. They all have their fingerprints all over this. Except, basically, Russ who just plays hard and fits poorly.

    Aloha,

The saddest part of this whole season for me is the what could have been. The Lakers front office is taking a lot of heat right now for not making a deal, but there currently isn’t any game changing deals to be made. That might not even surface. LeBron is complaining but I wonder how much of the Russ deal was on LeBron. He maybe one of the greatest of all time but as a shadow GM he has been a total bust. I believe the front office is smart in insisting that any trade they make giving up picks must significantly improve our chances. After all we tore a good roster apart in an attempt to take the burden off LeBron without realizing that a ball dominate PG will never work.

Of course we had the perfect PG for LeBron in Alex. He had an amazing chemistry with LeBron, could play off the ball, and was a hard nosed defender. I think our chances would be much better if we had Alex, Kuz and KCP on the roster. Plus their combined salaries are 13 mil less then Russ.

Oh and that first round pick we gave up for Dennis? That was used on Jaden McDaniels, a 6’ 9” combo forward know for lock down defense plus he’s shooting 36% from 3. Or perhaps you would prefer the pick after him. Desmond Bane. 6’ 5” 3 and D wing. Known for defense and shooting 43% from 3. This year he’s only shooting 39% on 8 attempts a game. He came in and played like an all star his rookie year. Things like this is where the misery comes from.

I actually do believe the Lakers will look for a trade but I doubt it will be of the trade machine driven blockbuster variety because those never happen. What I’m hoping for is a player on a reasonable contract that we could add to the roster for the future. I think that would be a win. I doubt that we will see a home run.

    • What could have been without our brilliant trades.

      PG Alex 6’ 6”
      SG desmond Bane 6′ 5″
      SF Kuz 6′ 9″
      PF Lebron 6′ 8″
      C AD 6′ 11″
      bench
      KCP 6′ 6″
      Austin 6″ 5″
      Lonnie 6′ 4″
      PatBev 6′ 1″
      Thomas 6′ 10″
isaiah Jackson 6′ 9″ combo forward (our pick traded in Russ deal and playing well)
      Troy 6′ 6″
      Gabriel 6′ 9″ combo Forward/C
      Christie 6′ 6″ Sg/F

think we might have a better chance with this group? a bit more size dont you think?

    • Well this is how it’s gone down with every Lebron team ever, so why did anyone think it was going to be any different here? Pillage all the assets chasing short term improvement in service to Lebron. Problem is this iteration of Lebron just isn’t worth that treatment.

At this point there’s no sense if fretting over what might have been. That ship sailed. Not making things worse should be the goal.

The fact they keep funneling in their Klutch clients, usually on an overpay, regardless of fit, and no one raises an eyebrow is beyond confounding. How that’s not some conflict, I have no idea.

    Aloha,

Anytime you turn the ball over 26 times for 31 points you deserve to lose. And to top it off 2 starters, Austin and Lonnie didn’t even score but we still had a shot, which maybe says more about the Heat than us.

I’m keeping this short, not much to talk about here. Still, JTA’s defense and work on the boards was great to see. It was a big part of the comeback. I feel for him because he’s either been injured or playing hurt most of the year. I’m hoping he can stay healthy moving forward.

The other reason we were still in the game was Troy Brown. 4 straight 3 pointers. He seems to have rediscovered his range the last two. My biggest problem down the stretch was Ham taking Troy out. Basketball 101 states, ride the hot hand. While we continued to get stops we couldn’t score ourselves. Why take someone that is red hot out? Especially when you can’t score. He was playing decent defense as well but he brought back PatBev. Too me this smacked of going with your preset rotation, instead of staying with what’s working. I have seen that a lot with various coaches and it always drives me crazy. Like I said, we didn’t deserve to win, still I wish Coach Ham had stuck with Troy. You never know in the NBA.

    • Great post, Michael. I was so pissed when he subbed Pat for Troy. Sit the hot shooter was a big mistake. Effing turnovers.

    • Michael, you are right. “ride the hot hand.” is simple logic and makes more sense. The biggest culprit in this game is the turnovers. There is no way you can win on the road on the second night of back-to-back games if you commit 26 turnovers. From the moment the game started and I saw all those turnovers I knew then that was the end of the game.

The Lakers look flat and unmotivated with no energy at all. All they did was show up and not come to play. This Miami team looks average and this was a winnable game but the Lakers didn’t have it in the tank. Heck, they could even lose to a G-League team with that lackluster effort. Add the fact that the coach doesn’t realize riding a hot hand in a tough situation like this might be the best move then you are staring at a loss.

Kudos to JTA for a surprising performance and hat off to Troy Brown for a newfound three-point shot. Overall, it was the turnovers that killed any hope the team may have had coming into this game.

    • Our usual inconsistency from our so-called team, with LBJ being the usual exception with his good to great play!
