Aloha,
Talk about a crazy year. When the schedule came out, it looked like the Lakers were going to be severely challenged. But we find ourselves the 3rd seed and 1. 1/2 games out of first with the 5th best record in the NBA.
I think JJ has proven that he is up for the job. Moving DLO to the 2nd unit has made a world of difference. It has balanced the team, giving us DLO and Dalton to go with LeBron. Now the bench is scoring.
There are defensive concerns but our offense has become one of the best in the league. Hopefully the return of Vando will help in that area. Adding Cam to the starters has helped our defense and it’s been pretty good during our 5 game winning streak.
JJ wants a 9 man rotation but I really think we should go 10 deep. I don’t think it’s wise to play LeBron and AD extended minutes every night.
Austin is shooting 36% from 3 but I think he will be better. If he can get it up to 38% or better he can be that 3rd star. He is flourishing in this offense and averaging 18 a game with nearly6 assists and 5 boards. The best of his career.
In Dalton we finally have that motion 3 point shooter. We have other guys that are good 3 point shooters but Dalton can shoot on the move which we didn’t have before,
Now if we can just get all our guys healthy at once perhaps we can figure out how good this team can be. Starting at the end of this month, through most of December most of our games are on the road. I think we only have 4 or 5 at home. That will be a real test. I hope we pass. If we get through that stretch on a positive note, this team might be contenders after all.

Aloha,
Buha reported that the Lakers are interested in Walter Kessler of the Jazz. 24 hours later there are no less than 7 sites reporting this, quoting Buha. First that’s not news. There were reports in July of the same thing. I like Kessler and wouldn’t mind landing him. He’s averaging 11 boards and 3 blocks so far. But here is the rub. Is the Jazz looking to trade him? Not a peep on a rather important detail. You can want a player all you want but doesn’t mean a guys going to be trade. It doesn’t become real until we hear that.

Aloha,
The Lakers start to the season has been impressive. Not just the wins but wins against quality teams. What’s more impressive is they are doing it while trying to learn a new system. There are a lot of kinks to work out but it’s great to win while you are still trying to figure it out.
Actually the Lakers could have blown all three teams out if they hadn’t shot themselves in the foot. If we shot even 25% from 3 we would have blown the TWolves out. We had good looks, just missed. While the Suns shot an insane percentage from 3 early, the 7 early turnovers were as responsible for that 22 point deficit as the Suns shooting. And last night 19 turnovers fueled the Kings transition game. I don’t mind a turnover when it’s due to a great defensive play but I hate sloppy turnovers. Austin and LeBron accounted for 11 of them. They are both gamblers but there were just to many forced passes into tight windows. I see turnovers as our number one problem right now but it’s nice to win even when we are turning it over.
LeBron had sat back and played a supporting role in the first two games. But the Kings were determined not to let AD beat them and doubled and tripled him all night. So LeBron said fine, be that way and proceeded to score 16 points in under 3 minutes, on his way to an impressive 33 point, 14 boards and 10 assists game. He reminded the league that you have to pick your poison. You maybe able to shut one star down but not both.
And AD, 30 points. That’s 3 30 point game in a row.Considering the effort the Kings put into stopping him, those 30 points must have been disappointing for the Kings.
Rui continued his fine play with 18 points and 9 boards. He is becoming quite the master at finding seams along the baseline for easy baskets. He’s also shooting 50% from 3 so far this season. Not bad.
DLO finally broke out of his shooting slump. He is to good of a shooter not to. 3 for 6 from 3 is more like it. I think he has been the biggest victim of the new AD centric scheme. I think JJ will need to find him a few more looks a game.
Austin was Austin. He continued to rebound, defend and knock down his 3’s. Just need to take better care of the ball. Those 6 turnovers were way too many.
Max continues to struggle while Dalton continues to shine. When Vando comes back he will be the 6th man and come in for LeBron. But it very well could be Dalton coming in for Austin when he needs a break. As long as Dalton can continue to compete on defense, his offense will win him the job.
When you think of 3 point shooting, which is more important. The Lakers made 14 on 34 attempts while the Kings made 15 on 44 attempts. It’s the made number that’s important.
So it’s the Suns next to begin a 5 game road trip followed by a tough Cav’s team. Thats 5 games against contenders, one back to back and a long road trip to start the season. The schedule makers didn’t do the Lakers any favors but we are still 3 and 0. Not bad.
-
Not bad indeed, Michael. Great post. You have to love how JJ has gotten this team off to a great start despite not having three important bigs is a testament to how widespread his impact has been. It’s rare to see so many positive signs in so little time.
What’s most impressive has been JJ finally engineering the long talked about handing over of the Lakers’ torch to Anthony Davis, with a cute reminder from the King that he can still be the GOAT whenever the Lakers might need it.
Reaves, Rui, and DLO all played great, as did Dalton and Jaxson. Christie won’t survive once Vando or Wood returns. Dalton will take his minutes. If Wood and Vando are both healthy, we may see a 10-man rotation. Wish we would get word how long before Koloko will be ready to play.
Lakers obviously still need a backup center and point-of-attack perimeter defender, although the presence on the roster of Koloko and Vanderbilt provide possible in-house solutions.
If Lakers look like legitimate contenders, Rob might spend the picks to after a couple of major upgrades that could be difference makers, like Marcus Smart and/or Robert Williams. At any rate, Lakers are in excellent position and may not need a trade other than one to dump JHS, Lewis, and Reddish and open up a couple of roster spots.
-
Tom, I don’t think that Smart is a smart move for the Lakers. He is an offensive liability. 11 points per, 39% from the field and 32% from 3 for his career. He is would destroy our spacing. Not to mention I don’t know who we would trade for him. DLO is a poor fit for the Griz because of his defense. When you have defenders like Vando and Gabe you can call on for D, we just don’t need him. As for Williams, he’s been out sense Oct 3 with yet another injury. His risk is not worth the benefit. By the way he has never even taken a 3 in the NBA.
-
We’ll have to A2D on Smart, Michael. I think he is still an elite point-of-attack defensive player, which is something we’re going to need, and a point guard. That’s a unique combination. A Smart/Reaves backcourt would be elite.
I also love Smart’s heart and think he’s the kind of player the Lakers need. He may not be as good a point guard offensively as Jrue Holiday but he’s just as good a defender and a perfect for the Lakers. Worth a pick imo.
-
Tom he’s not close Holiday. Holiday has an offensive game. Smart isn’t even a good assist man. 4 a game is not stellar. If you want to run the offense through AD you have to have shooters around him. Smarts man would be able to double AD, because no one fears Smarts shooting. We have defenders we can plug in if needed. I rarely say never but I believe that Smart is even on the Lakers radar. Besides we don’t have anyone the Griz would want. Smart is their lone starting perimeter defender. Not happening

Aloha,
Great win for the Lakers against a team many consider a contender in the west. I know it’s just one game, but I saw what I wanted to see. The Lakers regulars didn’t play a ton together in the preseason but when they did they looked very good and this was a continuation of what I saw in preseason. Just a few thoughts.
I wrote earlier that I was warming up to JJ and that trend continued. The Lakers busted their butts and JJ was completely engaged. He even called time out to slow some of the TWolves runs, something Darvin rarely did. For a first game I thought the teams executed extremely well.
Our new offense was on full display. JJ promised to unleash AD and boy did he. 35 points and 16 boards. He could have scored even more but he missed some bunnies early that he normally makes. But it was the ball and player movement that was even more impressive. Since LeBron arrived the Lakers have been an iso heavy team. Not last night. I really like how JJ ran the offense through AD. AD had 4 assists but he had a couple of others passes that led to players getting fouled and there were missed open 3’s as well. The offensive created good looks, we were just missing. We will start making them.
The defense also shined. People seem to forget about coaching staffs. Nate McMillan is a great defensive mind and his switching defense had his fingerprints were all over the defense. We gave the TWolves multiple looks and they could never quite figure us out. Ant man had 27 but on 25 shots, he was never comfortable. We also did a great job on Randle and Reed.
And of course offensive rebounds were an emphasis and we came through big time. Austin and AD had 4 and Rui had 3. We had 3 more offensive boards and 8 fewer turnovers. We had only 7. That’s 11 more shots right there.
I thought Austin had a great game. Beyond his 9 boards his defense was very good and he just seemed to be the glue guy on offense.
Rui also had a strong game. Mister irrelevant did what he did last year after he became a starter. Did what he did in the Olympics and in preseason. 18 points. Strong defense, with 2 steals and he blocked Rudy. He generally had either Randle or Reed and neither did much.
I liked Dalton’s run. He wasn’t a liability on defense and he showed off some of his play making skills. I could see him taking minutes from Max when Vando returns.
I came into the season cautiously optimistic. Based upon how good our starting unit looked down the stretch last season and in the preseason. I’m still cautiously optimistic. Yes it was only one game but I liked what I saw.

Aloha,
I haven’t posted in a while. I went into NBA hibernation because this may have been the most uneventful NBA offseason I can recall. Not just for the Lakers but the entire league. The combination of the new CBA, the play in and the lowered lottery odds for tanking has created a truly boring offseason with very little in the way of trades. The few players supposedly on the trade block were being shopped at ridiculously high prices. Even moving players with 2nd round picks was pricy. It cost the Nuggets 3 2nd round picks to move off of Reggie Jackson. While I blame Rob for the position we were in going into the summer, I don’t blame him for not getting anything done under these circumstances.
Still I’m cautiously optimistic heading into the new season. JJ is growing on me. He has the players buy in. They seem genuinely excited to play for him. He has a few experienced former head coaches to fall back on. It’s the leadership and vision that counts more than X’s and O’s.
I like our starting unit. They were 21 and 8 down the stretch with the toughest schedule in the league. And everyone they faced has something to play for. When this group played together this preseason they still look very good.
While we didn’t add any free agents this summer, in a way we did. Vando and Gabe played very little last year and if they are healthy this years it’s like adding 2 tough defenders to the team. Wile I’m hoping Vando will be back soon, Gabe has looked pretty good in minutes he played. Obviously he was on some minute restriction as they eased him in.
So I think we are solid through the top 7. I think after that is what will tell the tale. Overall Max was pretty impressive, especially on defense. He is still young and does make young guy mistakes but overall I think he will contribute. I believe Dalton will make JJ go to a 10 man rotation. He looked very good. If Wood can rediscover his offense, he is a guy that played well with AD last year. But our biggest current need is a defensive minded center to back up AD. We were killed last year whenever AD rested. Perhaps Koloko can be that guy. If not, at some point we will have to trade for one.
I think if this team performs well, AD could be a MVP candidate. I believe JJ is going feature him more than any of the prior coaches. There will be no more 4th quarters where he doesn’t touch the ball.
A lot has to go right for this team to contend, health of course being number one priority. We will need our young guys to a take another step in their development. And I have already seen it. With the exception of 3 point shooting, Austin has looked better on both sides of the ball. Rui has as well. He is defending better and rebounding at a high level, to go with very solid offense. He was my candidate for MIP player in a poll I took part in. Max has grown and we will have to wait on Vando.
While the west is really tough and we have a hard schedule out of the gate if most everything goes right and maybe wrong for a few teams I think this could turn out to be an exciting year.

Aloha,
I was just thinking of the talent the Lakers have drafted or signed as non drafted players. It’s pretty impressive. I’ve included players received using a Lakers first round pick.
Guards
DLO
Lonzo
Austin
Hart
Caruso
Max
Dyson Daniel’s promising 6’ 8” pg picked by the Pels
Dalton KnectSF
BI
Jayden McDaniels TWolves
Deandre Hunter HawksPF
Randle
KuzmaCenter
ZubacThat would be a pretty good team. It’s a testament to Rob’s brilliant leadership that we don’t have more to show for it.
-
3 All-Stars (who probably didn’t really warrant it), none as Lakers. Guys they missed on have led their teams to championships. Just plenty of boneheaded decisions by management. Too much placating of Lebron and the Klutch Klowns. Sad management decisions likely spurred on by clueless ownership.
-
-
You could make that argument, but his own team would disagree. Of the 3, he’s probably the only one who was maybe worth an all-star nod. Knicks pretty much wanted to get rid of him at any chance and immediately regretted paying him. The NY cred bump is real. But yes, the idiocy of the FO letting him just walk was just as real.

The regular season can’t get here fast enough. I understand that paid clickbaiters need to write to get paid but come on man!
In the last two days I read a post where the Spurs land both LeBron and Curry! And another where the Lakers land the Greek freak!
Just stop the nonsense😂
-
Man, I thought I was the only one with enough clickbaiters to deal with. What is going on out there is too depressing.
-
-
I think the trade machine would slow down some of the nonsense….many of the proposed trades are by large name media or journalists…it’s just irresponsible to write garbage of nonsensical trades and intentionally title the articles to make it seem as though the trade is a done deal…and I check it out and it’s all a clickbait titled article and a garbage article going for views. We should be paid for every article we “read”…every article we click and linger over…..PAY ME, or let me BLOCK the articles.

Aloha,
I have been thinking about ways that the Lakers could pull off a trade that would help the team without actually hurting it. I read somewhere that Ainge covets the Lakers firsts more then the Knicks who offered two for Kessler because the Knicks picks more than likely will be very good for years to come making the picks closer to 2nd’s while the future for the Lakers is less certain.
The Trade would send DLO, Hood-Shapiro, a first and removal of the protections on the 2027 pick. The Lakers receive Colin Sexton and Walter Kessler.
Why the Lakers do it is pretty obvious. It solves their back up center problem with a skilled 22 year old that could not only back up AD but also get minutes with him. Sexton would provide the same scoring as DLO. While he didn’t shoot as many 3’s as DLO, he did shoot 39% he is not quite as good at assists but he is much more athletic and plays faster then DLO and he’s also a down hill threat. Plus he’s only 25.
Why would the Jazz do it? First money. DLO has an expiring contract, while Sexton has another year after this one. For whatever reason Sexton doesn’t appear to be part of their long term plans. Neither are very good defenders but Sexton played on a team that lacked good defenders. Hood-Shapino would give them a 21 year old 6’ 6” point guard to look at. The Jazz are heavy on bigs and only have one PG other than Sexton, is more of a combo guard. And he is a 19 year old rookie. After this year Hood-Shapino’s next two seasons have team options, so if he doesn’t pan out they can cut him.
I think this could be a trade that could workout for both parties. While it would hurt to give up a first, Kessler would be only be 27 in 2029.
-
Aloha, MIchael. I like this trade because the Lakers desperately need a rim protector when AD is on the bench. I still worry about replacing DLO’s volume 3-point shooting and elite playmaking and don’t see Sexton as a starter or a point guard. That’s why I would personally hold on to DLO until the trade deadline. I still want to see how playing for JJ could change his ceiling in the playoffs.
-
I look at the PG position as a wash. They each bring their own strengths. As for play making DLO averaged a little over 1 assist more than Sexton but he also played 7 more minutes a game since the Jazz were trying to tank. DLO took 7 3’s while Sexton took 4.2 and shot 39% again playing time had a little to do with that. Personally I feel we get the same offensive production while landing a young quality center.

Rui got ejected from the Japan France match up. The video showed, it was just a foul. With 5 minutes left and Japan down by one they tossed him Japan lost in OT. Rui had 24 points at the time. I guess they couldn’t let France lose to Japan, in Paris. Disgraceful. This will be controversial for years to come.

Aloha,
I have read so many articles on the Lakers inaction that I have drawn the conclusion that all of these writers do not understand that the league has changed and it will probably never be the same again. The 3 things that changed everything are:
1. The new CBA with all of its punitive penalties for exceeding the various caps. And rules that make trades more difficult.
2. The play in game. This has given many teams hope of cracking the playoffs making them more reluctant to trade good players. While it’s championship or bust for the Lakers, making the play in game would be a huge win for many franchises.
3. The new lottery odds that discourages teams from tanking.
I guess I am less disappointed than many Laker fans because my expectations were so low going into the off season. This was a relatively weak free agent class but the bigger issue is the lack of sellers and the abundance of buyers.
It’s Econ 101. Supply and demand. Is Walter Kessler worth 2 first round picks? Please. Jamari Grant is a name linked to the Lakers. The Trailblazers want 2 firsts for him. He’s a good player but he’s not worth 2 firsts and a couple of good players.
I’m sure the Lakers are doing a cost analysis, I know I am and I don’t see any of the names mentioned that move the needle enough to justify the cost. Perhaps a big center like Wendell Carter would be worth a first because he is only making 11 mil but a lot of other teams think so too.
I think the Lakers are smart waiting. There will be a new system. I believe Austin, Rui, Vando and Max all have room to grow. Of course Darvins miss management of the roster hurt. When Rui became a starter, the Lakers went 21-10 with the toughest schedule in the league over that period. This is a good team. I think it makes sense to see who they are with better health, especially Vando and Vincent. We didn’t get a chance to see that last year.
For me the biggest win of the summer is that we haven’t done anything stupid yet. But Rob is the GM so I do worry. The worst thing the Lakers can do is overpay for a move that doesn’t really elevate the team. A trade just to make a trade would be stupid. .
-

-
Hi Michael, it is good to know that we are both on the same page on the Lakers situation. For one, you won’t be disappointed if you are not expecting much. The same goes for me. You just don’t make a trade just for the sake of trade if the returns don’t move the needle. Three, we still have a team that went to the Western Conference finals just the year before. Fourth, we haven’t seen what the players you mentioned could have been. So, instead of rushing to make changes in this free-agency class that is not very solid, waiting for the right opportunity might be the best option even though that may get on so many fans’ nerves. I agree 💯 %.

Aloha,
I have no idea what is going on. Like I said, I had very low expectations going into the summer but this is ridiculous. Now Robb probably didn’t think that all 3 of the minimum contracts he handed out last year would opt in. But they all for various reasons did. Now are hands are tied. We have a 15 man roster and are into the 2nd apron. I have no idea what Rob is thinking. The Spurs just sent a player to the Hornets with a 2nd round pick. The Hornets will waive him. Robb needs to do something similar. Any of our minimum contract would do the trick. Until we get below that 2nd apron, our hands are tied. We can’t combine contracts in a trade for an upgrade. We can’t bring back even a penny more in a one for one trade. We can’t sign any of the potentially helpful free agents still on the market. I just don’t get it.
One thing I do want to make clear. I do agree with the Lakers reluctance to give up one or both of their remaining 1st round picks. None of the realistic trade options are game changers. The Trailblazers want two first rounders for Grant. I would not give up even one. He maybe an upgrade over Rui, it isn’t big enough to warrant two first rounders and the contracts it would take to land him. Same goes for Cam Johnson and Finney-smith with the Nets. The Nets want a first for either. They both could help make us better. It’s rumored they would take DLO. But now you have a hole at PG, without a viable replacement, so we could actually be worse. What I want to see is moves around the margins. Save the assets for a true game changer or the inevitable rebuild that is coming.

Aloha,
So, the Mav’s trade Hardaway jr into the Pistons cap space. It creates a trade exception that allows them to trade for Klay. This creates a trade exception for the Warriors and they sign Buddy into it.
And our Lakers can’t even find a trade for a minimum expiring contract that we pay to land into some teams cap space. We have a team option for next year on Maxwell Lewis so even he’s an expiring deal.
A trade puts us under the 2nd apron and allows us to make some moves. Don’t you think Rob that you should do that while there are some useful players still available?

Aloha,
I am having a hard time figuring out what the Lakers are doing. I’m not at all upset that we didn’t get Klay. We didn’t have a chance anyway. The Warriors didn’t want to take back salary in a trade and Dallas had a trade exception. I’m also hoping that the Derozan nonsense has passed.
I’m not upset that we haven’t found a big trade. There isn’t many names that seem to be on the trade block. So naturally the sellers are asking a lot for them. I try and look at net gain in a trade. Does what we give up make us significantly better for what we gain. With the names out there I feel the answer is no.
No what is frustrating me, is we haven’t freed up a roster spot yet. The rumor is that LeBron would help keep us under that 2nd apron but currently we haven’t created the space. It’s not that hard. Pay a team with cap space to take a guy. Send Lewis into the Hornets cap space along with a 2nd rounder.
The inventory of free agents that can help is drying up. We needed center help and most of the best low cost centers are gone. Every year there are a couple of quality guys that have to sign for less but the longer the Lakers wait, the less likely it is that we will be able to land one.
-
Michael H wrote a new post
Aloha,
While the inventory is thinning out, there are still several guys that can be had for the mini middle level that could help the team. I have no clue what Rob is doing but he should at least be looking to free up a roster spot or two.
Assuming LeBron’s offer to take a pay cut was real, I hope him signing that new contract marks the end of the foolish Derozen pursuit. Just read that the Heat may get him. Come on Miami!!!!
I am not sure how the Lakers planned to replace Dlo if traded, considering that at the moment there doesn’t appear to be any available point guards. Unlikely as it is, but let’s say they have a plan. The Nets have said they are willing to take back DLO. I would explore Cam Johnson. That would give us a versatile group of forwards. Cam can play 2 through 4, although he has problems with defending big power forwards. Rui can play 3 through small ball 5. Vando can defend every position. Wood can play 4 or 5 and of course LeBron.
It would likely cost at least one of our first round picks and some seconds. And of course all the contracts we would send are expiring deals which would help the Nets and us. This is probably not enough but I know they have talked. Considering they just received a boat load of 1st rounders, our firsts may have more value to them than most rebuilding teams.

JJ has certainly been a breath of fresh air. I’m already confident he is going to become a great head coach for the Lakers.
I also agree with you on a 10-man rotation. Need to learn to win without AD and LeBron. I still believe we need a trade for a starting center (Williams or Kessler).
If we could get a defense first point guard like Smart, we could even start Dalton and have Reaves become the 6th man off the bench. Or maybe DLO will stay and be a 6MOY candidate.
Lakers in good situation. Big question is what will Rob do if anything. Next move is about championships this year and next, which are probably LeBron’s last two shots as a Laker.
