Report: Ben Simmons and Doc Rivers’ relationship ‘suffered significant damage’ that some believe is ‘irreparable’ https://t.co/HIbR7uC53A

For all his flaws the 76ers need Ben Simmons. At this point, with all the bad PR out there, he has the leverage. It’s a superstar-driven league, Ben has taken Embiid-less teams to decent places. Yes, his game has flaws but they won’t get back good value for him now and with the flurry of PGs finding new deals a lot of those won’t be available in a trade until sometime in Decmeber. Would the Wizards trade Beal for Simmons? I don’t see why, same with Dame in Portland which is at least out of conference.
Doc Rivers is my name, killing players confidence is my game!
-
“Doc Rivers is my name, killing players’ confidence is my game!” Hahaha! That’s a good one, Jamie. Funny as hell. Not sure if their relationship can be repaired, but it certainly will require one of them to take a bow and apologize. Where there is pride there has to be a fall, and pride comes before a fall.
-
Well said Buba. It’s like being a child of divorce when your coach throws you under a bus 🚌 you can’t trust Doc won’t do it again.
I also agree with Buba, it will take one of them hat in hand (Rivers). That might not be enough…

I’m all for adding a backup point guard and two bigger 3&D wings who can defend bigger wing scorers. IT fits the backup PG role. Wes could be one of the wing defenders although I would like somebody bigger. Then there’s always Dudley and his valuable role. Be interesting to see what Lakers do.
The one thing I’m against is signing another center as that would only give Vogel a reason NOT to play AD at the 5. Otherwise, I’m open to anything for the last two spots, assuming we leave one open just in case somebody good gets waived.

Dennis, would you prefer to slink out of town with your tail between your legs for a charity offer from the Celtics?
Or go to Rob and say you’re sorry and are willing to stay with the Lakers to back up Russ on a 1-year deal for $10M.
That’s a win-win situation for Lakers and Schroder.
Lakers get a backup PG and Dennis gets his Bird rights. But depends on Dennis’ state of mind and acceptance.
Could only work if Dennis has his head on straight.-
-
It’s funny LT because you were the one harping over and over about how Caruso would cost over 3 times as much to keep and the Lakers would NEVER blow the tax bill out of the water for him and now you’re turning around and advocating for this team-killer to return while blowing the tax bill out of the water?
Head scratching…
-
Not really, Jamie. Two things changed my mind.
The first was finding out that 5 teams were going to pay more luxury taxes than the Lakers, including the Bucks and Jazz. That’s criminal imo. Lakers should never be outspent. We should have spent that money on Alex.
The second was my realizing that we were going to go into the trade deadline with only THT and Nunn as trading chips unless we were able to get a player or trade exception.
I am a little worried about having too many guards and maybe having guys who are unhappy with their minutes or role. Right now, we’re fine at 12 imo. Adding Dennis or another player who will win minutes could upset that.
Here’s the interesting question I asked myself. In retrospect, would I have rather we kept Alex or Dennis. Based on our treatment of them, both would have been trading chips but I think Dennis’ $10M w/b an underpay while Alex’s $10M was probably an overpay. Comes down to scoring over defense.
-
I could understand going deeper into LT hell for Caruso, who was part of an NBA championship, plays better defense than Dennis and hits the three better while being his equal as a ballhandling lead guard. Rob and Jeanie won’t be doing Dennis any favors for the reasons I’ve mentioned a few different times. That ship sailed when he kicked the more than fair (one would say generous based on what his market value has turned out to be since Caruso managed to find a roughly 10 million dollar deal and Dennis could not) extension to the curb.
As you said, we already have enough guards and so we’re basically overpaying for a trading chip it feels unlikely anyone would want to trade for. I don’t get it. We’re not big players at the mid-season trading deadline under Pelinka, anyhow. So we’d blow a bunch of money on a disgruntled player because…we really really hope the few minutes he’d play would enhance what is obviously a low value based on overall league interest? None of that makes any sense to me at all.

Trying to bully a team that is offering you what it will because. come one guys, I really blew it a couple months back and completely over-estimated my value on the open market and that’s roughly 1/4 of what I was planning on!
Overseas is his best option for $$$, Celtics if he wants to stay in the NBA at all. See you, dude, no place for you on the Lakers. You blew it, now you have to live with it.

Lakers should offer Dennis $10M per year to backup Russ. He keeps his Bird rights, gets more money, and better place to rehab his brand. Lakers get backup for Russ and trade chip for deadline.
Note: I would only do this if Dennis was in the right frame of mind and understood and accepted his role. Lakers could work with him to find a better option for him on another team.
-
They didn’t penny-pinch with Caruso just so they could blow the tax bill out of the water with the guy who no-showed in the playoffs, rejected fair extensions (multiple times) and was a locker room distraction. We have a backup PG in Nunn and potentially THT. If nobody wants him now for $10 mil (which they don’t) nobody is going to want him at the deadline for the same price unless you give away picks to move him which we don’t really have many to spare. Frankly I wouldn’t be surprised of LBJ and AD were like “No Rob, let the man walk because we don’t want him in the locker room.” That wouldn’t surprise me at all. We’re done doing Dennis Schroder favors, or we should be, he can figure his future out all on his own at this point.

I don’t know who reps Dennis but I doubt it will be for much longer. If you didn’t have papers for this guy to sign minute-one of free agency on team _____ for either the desired $$$ or the role expected what was the sense in turning down the offer from LA? The answer is none. Now he won’t have any BR next season meaning the most he can be offered by the Celtics will be a 20% raise. No need for any other team to go higher so it will take plus seasons of working his azz off in the NBA to rebuild his value to what it was when the extension was offered. There’s a saying about playing with fire that seems apropos here…
Kind of feel for Dennis but this is a disaster wholly of his own creation. This one will sting for a few years but with luck he’ll find his way to that $$ bag in a season or two. Those Bird Rights have flown the coop and it takes time to re-acquire that status:
As is the case with every exception in the CBA, there are different kinds of Bird Rights. Here is how each can be broken down:
Full Bird Rights
A team gets a player’s full Bird Rights if they spend three years with their team without leaving in free agency.
It doesn’t have to be on a three-year deal. This applies to players on a three-year deal, players on a two-year deal followed by a one-year deal or players on three consecutive one-year deals.
Early Bird Rights
A team gets a player’s Early Bird Rights if he spends two years with a team without leaving in free agency.
Non-Bird Rights
A team gets a player’s non-Bird Rights if he spends a single year with the team.
From exact financial terms, non-Bird Rights allow teams to pay players up to 120 percent of his previous salary in order to re-sign him. For example, if a player is coming off a one-year deal that paid him $10 million, the team he was on can go over the cap to re-sign him to a contract where the first year is worth up to $12 million.Furthermore, Early Bird Rights are similar, but they allow teams to pay players either 175 percent of his previous salary or 104.5 percent of the average league salary, whichever is higher. (The latter is in place to protect players coming off minimum deals.) Hence, in the former scenario, a player coming off a two-year deal where each year was worth $10 million can be re-signed to a contract where the first year is worth up to $17.5 million, i.e. 175 percent of the previous salary, if the team wants to go over the cap when re-signing said player.
And finally, for Full Bird Rights, the only limit in place is the max salary the player can receive, be it 25 percent of the cap, 30 percent of the cap or 35 percent of the cap. For a recent example, just observe how star Denver Nuggets big man Nikola Jokic went from earning the minimum in 2017-18 ($1.5 million) to earning the max in 2018-19 ($25.5 million).
As far as trades and the transferal of Bird Rights go, if a player has been with a team for three complete years and he gets traded, his new team will acquire his Bird Rights.
However, if a player has been on a team for two years and re-signs for a third year, they automatically inherit a no-trade clause on that third season. Why? Because it gives players the right to have to approve a trade which would cause them to lose the full Bird Rights that were about to be available to them.

Yeah man, a cautionary tale indeed for young guys who want the big payday and scoff at a more than fair offer. If he gets injured, like IT did, it’ll be another sad tale in the NBA. ‘Cept IT balled his heart out for the Celtics and almost took them to the ECF, Schroder pulled a no-show and is healthy.
