I’ll say this about that title: it’s a once-in-a-century accomplishment.
Much like the title the Spurs won in 98-99 when the season started in Feb, was 50 games (kind of compacted if I recall so a different kind of grind) and players like to decry it because 32 games were lopped off as a result of the strike. In some ways it was a amore grueling physical accomplishment than the Bubble title.
I feel like the Bubble was more of a mental accomplishment. The team with the most mental fortitude, ability to adapt game-to-game (which the Lakers nailed under Frank, LeBron and I will always credit Rondo a lot as well as the level of maturity and professionalism that team possessed) did the best. If you were a pro and got on your treatment post game you did yourself a favor. Or there was cards and fishing and Jimmy B coffee.
For me I never really bought into the * for San Antonio, they still had to go out and win games and everyone was getting the same schedule, same number of games, and so on. Same goes for the Bubble, if it gets an * it’s simply to acknowledge that, while a worthy accomplishment, everyone still had to go out and win the games after all, it can never really be replicated. It’s unique.
The mental strain of what was happening at the time shouldn’t be glossed over. Now it’s easy to look back through the current COVID lens, we’re inoculated to news about it with many opinions about the ins and outs of it all. For the players they went into a Pauly Shore-esque Biodome complete with distractions to take you away from the game. If you had problems back home of some kind, pause that. Sick relative? Need to make choice a la Avery Bradley. You didn’t know if everyone would get it and what did that even really mean? The biggest mind game of any NBA finals, IMO.
The break between is the true issue, for me at least. There will never be a three month break along with a tune up stretch on into the playoffs. It’s something that Rob hasn’t reacted well to, that makes us all question whether AD can do 82 into the playoffs and have anything useful left in the tank and if even LeBron would be gassed just getting a team to that point. I know I have my doubts on each of those topics.
Still, if it gets an * for me it’s not because it was easier or harder, just unparalleled. Yes, there is a banner on the wall, but unlike every other banner ever put up on that wall it has not been, and maybe never even had the potential to be, a harbinger of what’s to come. There was never really the threat of a repeat, the short break coupled with AD’s fragility along with shuttling off some key vets doomed that team. They did take the elite defensive identity forged in those playoffs but lost the leadership and brain power to get younger. We know what happened after that.

I’ll go as far as to say, the Lebron we got was the one I had the dreadful pit in my stomach over – the aging superstar version. The guy who still puts up impressive offensive stats, doesn’t play defense, has moments where he looks to be his old self, but really doesn’t have the gas in the tank to get it done when the stakes are the highest or you need him most. That still doesn’t at all impede him from acting like the league’s alpha, demanding his agency makes all key personnel decisions, and a salary meant for someone far more impactful on the court. The ridiculous notion that pairing him with a couple of decent role players, or even another mercurial all-star will somehow vault this team into legitimate title contention has set the Lakers back a decade and counting.
Were it not for the covid layoff, there’s little doubt Lebron would’ve led 4 mostly disappointing Lakers season. Last year was the absolute most regrettable Lakers season I’ve witnessed. Mostly a lot of self inflicted pain, driven by Lebron selfish moves. #1 get him and his clients paid, #2 lessen the burden on his inability to get it done every night by bringing in another playmaker. Sadly, they couldn’t get an actual contributor in that role.
People also often neglect to mention his first ring was also in a shortened season. Now, there’s no denying that every team played under that same conditions, but in all likelihood, Lebron’s championships will be bookended by abbreviated seasons.

Isn’t it perturbing when some have thoughts of this is wrong and so is that, but rarely if ever take a stand for what and why they critic with no solutions themselves. On a political issue like abortion, some think total outlaw on that, but have no earthly idea about what will be done with hundreds of thousands that will be orphan with no takers!

I just don’t have any idea. Kyrie could be a differ maker, but could be another Westy? Depends on his motivation of himself.

No more 6 in the NBA or 42 in MLB (cept for 1 special day). Should do same for Russell. What’s really weird to me is Number 99 should be retired in NHL (before he dies)!

Push in all the chips or fold. My stupid Yankees passed on Soto and swapped Montgomery for nuttin and he is 2-0 with Cards. Sheesh. Where are Jerry and George?

Lakers need to go all in with picks or ride out the year and say bye bye to LBJ and Westy, swap AD and start all over?
-
I will say ride out the year and go from there. I am not expecting a championship this year as presently constructed, so I’m at peace with my expectations. Going all in with the picks would only make our future rebuild murky and a bit more restrained. However, a home run gymnastics around the roster would change my mind.
-
I feel the same Buba. Using one pick is where smart stops for me. Using both basically relegates us to draft day deals or dangling picks 7 years out every other year. There’s not one smart thing about that situation.

In every full Lakers season, Lebron has proven injury prone, defensively disinterested, and when you absolutely needed a basket, he couldn’t be counted on. He’s never even made the playoffs as a Laker in an 82-game season. What changes with a trade?
-
It’s funny how the Bubble title is both one of the harder things in terms of it being an epic test of focus, mental fortitude, and excelling in inexpected conditions but also, because of the long break, has becone something if an asterisk to both Laker fans who are trying to figure out the worth vs. cost to retain LeBron and eventually AD. Problem with ending is it the Lakers track record of rebuilding aint great in modern times.
-
The bubble deserves no more of an asterisk than another shortened season, but simultaneously for the Lakers, exemplifies what even Lebron himself knows: he can’t carry the load in the regular season and AD’s health can’t be counted upon. Kyrie is only slightly less of a hail Mary than Westbrook was. Neither has nor will relegate the Lakers from being a team where the unlikely health of its aging or injury-prone stars will make or break the season. So, the Lakers can either roll the dice on what’ll probably be another disappointing campaign and push their future relevance even further down the road, or stand firm and make some moves that’ll position them to getting back to the mountaintop someday in the next decade or so.
Paying that fading star never works out in the modern NBA. Waaaaaaaaaaay too much salary for diminishing returns. The Lakers have proven that several times now. Time to do the smart thing, blow it up, and build for the future.

Great photo, Dave.
Many moons ago, my friend.
Great memory to cherish.
Vinny was really special.
I listened to Dodger games
just because of him. -
Thumbs up from me, DJ. You’ve got to find a way to keep these treasures for the rest of your life. Man, I wish I had throwback pictures like this. I will be going around with my chest out like I am on top of the world. You feel me?
By the way, “super wife” is a super cool way to praise a superstar wife. Love the term. Great job, DJ.

Sure glad Kobe didn’t have an EGO, lol! Watch “The Captain” Jeter! It’s great so far. He and Kobe must have been brothers from differing mommas!

I think if I was LBJ I would pass on an extension and perhaps go back to Cavs for basically nothing next year. They have a very very good chance of the East with him. He’s a billionaire and can move back to LA after his career. I hope we keep him, but?

When it comes to LeBron and his contract I never bothered to read what many in the media are making it look like to be. Everything going on behind the scenes in regards to his contract is only going to be a formality, if not ceremonial.
We all have to keep in mind that he won a championship with every franchise he played for. We also have to realize that he is heading into the twilight of his career, so championship hunting with another franchise at this point in his career would not be a motivation for him especially if you have to consider him leaving a glamorous franchise like the Lakers.
Trust me, I understand a player of LeBron’s caliber would want as many championships as possible before he retires, but I also don’t think every player would be lucky enough to win 11 championships like Bill Russell.
What the Lakers and LeBron have going on is focusing on the makeup of the next roster. Getting him a good roster is, and should be, the priority and a better way to send him off into the sunset. And yes, getting him a few more chips along the way would be the cherry on top of the cake.
Come August 4th, we will be focusing on some other stuff rather than LeBron’s contract. And that’s just my two cents.
-
Buba, as much as I’d love to see another Lakers championship in the Lebron era, I just don’t see it happening. Paying 50mil for a guy that gives you performance warranting half that at best, is only a recipe for disappointment. Trying to fill out a championship roster with that handicap is fool’s errand.
-
Thanks for the great response @therealhtj. You made a very good point about the 50mil. I was going to mention that but didn’t get the time while I was busy.
To build a championship roster with your hands strapped behind you by such a monstrous contract is almost impossible. And even though folks think LeBron is a billionaire I don’t see him taking a discount for the sake of roster improvement. That’s just not going to happen and it is also what you get from a superstar even if father time is knocking on the door.
I started noticing LeBron going face to face with father time last season and could tell he is losing some of his athleticism bit by bit. He is definitely pushing through it with all he could muster, but let’s not be fooled — Father time is never defeated.
But at the same time, we are at this point because he has proven his worth over the years. So, to me, let’s give Caesar what belongs to Caesar. And that’s the hard reality.
-
I think the Lakers just want to stay (barely) relevant as opposed to try and build an actual contender. Wasting money on aging stars to keep their name in the headlines is pretty much the only trick Jeannie knows. It’s made for an unwatchable product since the Doc handed over the reigns. I bet if he held on long enough, he would’ve realized his heirs were incapable of continuing his legacy, and he’d have sold the team.

If LBJ leaves next year, we will have a boatload of money and it would be great for Cavs if they want him with that team. Might take a pay cut (usually what billionaires do, lol). Our problem might be who on that Laker team am I watching? Let’s see, we gots AD and???? Can’t wait to watch them! Yahoo!

LeBron James Next Team Odds
The Nets are given -175 odds, or an implied 63.6% chance to land LeBron James if he’s traded. However, the Nets aren’t alone on the market. Oddsmakers give five teams at least +750 odds. That includes the New York Knicks who are given +750 odds, or an implied 11.8% chance to land LeBron.
A third stint with Cleveland is also on the table according to oddsmakers. The Cavs are given +200 odds, or an implied 33.3% chance. A return to Miami is another possibility, as the Heat are given +300 odds, or an implied 25% chance.
The only team on the market that isn’t in New York or that James hasn’t played for before is the Utah Jazz. Utah is given +500 odds, or an implied 16.7% chance to land LeBron in what would be one of the most shocking moves in NBA history.
LeBron’s market is small. In fact, it’s the smallest for any player this year. For example, Kevin Durant’s market has 13 teams on it and Kyrie Irving’s has eight. For LeBron to have just five means there’s reason to believe the list is that narrow.
The fact he’s on the odds market at all suggests that a trade may be more possible than people know at this point. Could we see LeBron traded for Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving is arguably the NBA’s biggest blockbuster trade ever?
Oddsmakers are saying it’s a real possibility.
