I’ve always been a voracious reader but I just re-read (one of the benefits of getting older and having a poor memory) one of my all-time favorite novels, which was DARK MATTER by Black Crouch, which is a Sci-Fi thriller about multiple universes and the milions of other versions of you running around the multiverse. Maybe we all have millions of destinies.
Destiny infers some form of predetermination or master control over life, whether god or alien. I’ve always looked at destiny as being the best possible outcome of the millions of decisions you make over your lifetime. In other words, your best YOU.

“Not in doing what you like, but in liking what you do is the secret of happiness.”

Great quote, Buba. There’s a subtle but important difference between doing what you like and liking what you do.
I’ve been a lifetime proponent of the former but would have been smarter to have been a stronger proponent of the latter. Sometimes doing what you like is not the best for you.

Best quote yet, Buba. I love this one. What a difference how these three words are used. Power of Love. Love of Power.
All along the Watchtower…

So true, Tom. The
quote is a palindrome. It can be used both forward and backward and still create a whole new meaning. In fact, I had a palindrome on my birthday this year: 2/2/22. And that is February 2nd, ’22. Thanks for the response. How is your weekend going? Do you still go on your routine hiking?

It’s interesting that life works in opposites. Whatever side there is to life there is an opposite to it that helps make it to work. Opposites attract!

Had a mentor tell me this when I was still a pup and damn if I haven’t seen it play out time & time again over the years.

Most of the time when you f #ck up you move down.

Love the quotes idea, Buba, but I’m always suspect of pithy quotes that ignore reality or are shallow. Failure is often fatal and self destructive. Sometimes, people never learn from failure because of intrinsic flaws that lead to repeated failure. And the older you get, the less you’re able to adjust. I think it’s great when we do learn from failure but I’d bet that’s more the exception than the rule.
-
“Failure is often fatal and self destructive.”
True. And some people can’t seem to recover from a failure. But then, again, you go through trials and tribulations to be who you really need to be.
-
Great subject, Buba!
The battle of the quotes. So what is the best quote about failure and success and balancing them? Here are some great ones. I love #1, 2, and 4.
1. “Failure isn’t fatal, but failure to change might be” – John Wooden
2. “Everything you want is on the other side of fear.” – Jack Canfield
3. “Success is most often achieved by those who don’t know that failure is inevitable.” – Coco Chanel
4. “Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” – Robert F. Kennedy
5. “The phoenix must burn to emerge.” – Janet Fitch
6. “If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original.” – Ken Robinson
7. “Giving up is the only sure way to fail.” – Gena Showalter
8. “If you don’t try at anything, you can’t fail… it takes back bone to lead the life you want” – Richard Yates
9. “Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” – Denis Waitley
10. “When you take risks you learn that there will be times when you succeed and there will be times when you fail, and both are equally important.” – Ellen DeGeneres
-
By the way, I personally am one of those people who failed multiple times before succeeding. My philosophy has always been never to regret not doing something.
That’s led me to making some great and horrible decisions in my life but my only regrets were for things I’d do differently, not for things I wished I had tried to do.

My 3 cents, all anonymous: “Your error is not nearly so important as your response.” “If you don’t have time to do it right, how will you have time to do it over?” And this classic: “A woman’s place is in the home, as soon as she can get there after work. ” :))

If that is a Miles quote I should go to Vegas, stat.
My favorite quote from Mr. Davis is this one:
If anybody wants to keep creating they have to be about change. Living is an adventure and a challenge. When people come up to me and ask me to play something like ‘My Funny Valentine,’ some old thing that I might have done when they were fucking this special girl and the music might have made them both feel good, I can understand that. But I tell them to go buy the record. I’m not there in that place any longer and I have to live for what is best for me and not what’s best for them.

I want to play Bubba. Question for thought. Why do many think White is the Dominate Race, when any mixed always take the look of the Non-White Race?
-
First of all, we have to bear in mind that even in the animal kingdom all animals are created equal but some are more equal than others. It is the nature of life we live in.
Now, when it comes to racial equality whites tend to see themselves as more equal than people of color even though we are all equal. Sometimes even among whites, some think you have to be the whitest to be white. Anything less is considered inferior.
The white people taking dominion over black people was rooted in their ability to explore the world in the early civilizations that landed them in Africa. Taking advantage of the hospitality of the African people allowed them to divide and conquer. Ever since then the white people have achieved psychological superiority and dominion over black and other people of color. Even if you are Mexican or Indian but white, you are still considered superior to none whites and that includes mixed race.
Any color less than white is inferior.Unfortunately, that’s a stigma black and people of color have to deal with for a long time if not forever. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
-
-
The entire issue of race is so important that I find the efforts of the right to limit those discussions as stupid.
Take myself as an example. My father was Chinese and my mother White. As a half-Chinese kid in Wisconsin, I never had a schoolmate of any color but white. No blacks, Hispanic, or even Asian, other than relatives.
The hurtful and damaging aspect of racism is that it can make kids ashamed of or wanting to change their race. As a kid, I was ashamed of being Chinese. When you’re biracial, you never fit either culture completely. That was how it was with me. Bullying as a kid made me the aggressive hard charging person I am.
At any rate, when you live as long as I have and meet so many people who are smarter, more talented, and more accomplished that you realize that race is a barrier that can be overcome but not by everybody or everywhere.
