I don’t really know what anyone would hope for or expect from media day. Rob wasn’t going to walk out and gesture widely and yell “WE TRADED RUSS!” and depart.
What I got out of media day was basically what I expected. LeBron is on board. AD is on board. Russ is pissed, and when isn’t he? Go back and watch last season’s media day and you’ll see the same demeanor, the same “let’s get this done with” attitude…much like Kawhi Leonard’s media day went, and frankly why shouldn’t Russ be sullen? Dude’s been dragged through the mud for months now for what? Silly fake trades, like the 2 FRPs and Russ for Mitchell and some detritus which had z-e-r-o chance of happening, and a rumor mill set to ludicrous. He looks how I feel when I here some of these questions.
The role-players all said the right things “it’s different when you put this jersey on, the city embraces you”, Darvin Ham said all the right things “we’re going to let camp decide who starts blah blah blah” and Rob said all the right things “we will improve the roster fer sure”. It’s media day and you’re not on the Phoenix Suns or Brooklyn Nets. it went great.
Zio looks yoked, Pelicans have a shot at making some noise if he can play 60-65 games (I might still give him the Embiid treatment and hold him out of the second half of back-to-backs). DeAndre Ayton is the saddest newly minted millionaire I’ve ever seen, and Kevin Durant looked SO PUMPED! I don’t know Kyrie, why do you think folks think you’re unreliable? Just that crazy thing called life, I guess…
At any rate, I wasn’t expecting truths and enlightenment from NBA media day. I got about what I expected: weirdness, resignation, and a bunch of dudes showing up for the first day of work.
