The Lakers, coming off an embarrassing loss in San Antonio, head home for a Monday night clash against the Knicks. But with a record of 15-11, the Lakers’ play has made many in the Lakers community (including our own fans) point fingers at the coaching staff for a great portion of the blame for why the team is off to such an uninspiring start. Is Darvin Ham’s coaching the issue, could the Lakers be doing better under another coach? Tune in as the guys from the Lakers Fast Break share thoughts on this delicate subject. Why are so many critical of “Pockets” coaching job this season? We share thoughts on the coaching job of Darvin Ham on this Lakers Weekend on the Lakers Fast Break podcast!

Sometimes I ask myself, Is there a correlation between an NBA coach’s skills and the performance of his players on the court? Why are high-paying NBA coaches’ teams piling up losses? For example, Pop is the highest-paying coach in the NBA at $16M but piled up a record 18-game losing streak before injuries to the Lakers allowed them to snap that streak a few days ago. Meanwhile, Monte Williams is the second highest at $13M, but the Pistons are drowning towards a record territory with their losing streak at 23 games and counting.
And why are Ty Lue, Eric Spoelstra, Nick Nurse, and Joe Mazzula of the Celtics considered good coaches after inheriting good teams? And why was Quin Snyder good with the Jazz but not very good with the Hawks? A coach is as good as the team he inherits. Darvin Ham struggled with the Lakers at the beginning of last season until the trade deadline acquisitions turned things around for the better, and the team reached the Western Conference Finals.
A correlation exists between an NBA coach’s skills and the performance of his players on the court. Phil Jackson is an example. A good coach can motivate his players, develop their skills, and create effective game strategies that lead to success on the court. Darvin Ham is still learning.
However, there are many factors that can impact a team’s performance, including injuries, team chemistry, and the talent level of the players. It’s also worth noting that winning in the NBA is incredibly difficult, and even the best coaches will experience losing streaks from time to time. As for why high-paying NBA coaches’ teams are piling up losses, it’s hard to say without looking at specific examples. Sometimes, a coach may be dealing with a roster with significant weaknesses or facing other challenges that make it difficult to win consistently. Ultimately, coaching is just one factor in a team’s success, and there are many different variables that come into play.

Nice comment Buba. With young teams I think they have to learn how to win. The Spurs for instance have blown a lot of big leads on that losing streaks. As for the Lakers I have questions a few of Davins moves but over all he could not do much because of injuries and that it didn’t help that we had an extremely difficult schedule during this stretch.

You call it naysayers, we call it like it is. Ham’s coaching has been underwhelming again this year and has cost us games. The majority of our panelists and our audience are in agreement on this. Admit it Tom, Ham has made some terrible coaching blunders this season.

Listen to Jamie and I talk about the Lakers summer league and latest purple and gold speculation about AD moving to the four and what’s in stake for new Lakers center Jaxson Hayes.
Jamie made a surprisingly bold prediction that he thinks there’s a 50/50 chance the Lakers might start Hayes at center to begin the season. Now that is a bold prediction, especially since we have not yet seen what Jax looks like in a Lakers uniform.

The Lakers did what was needed to control their destiny and end up as the 3rd seed. They have a date with the 6th seeded Minnesota Timberwolves.
