Lakers may have landed a 24 year old center prospect who could develop into the perfect fit next to Anthony Davis on both sides of the ball. Most importantly, Koloko looks like the real deal as a shot blocker and should be able to step right in as the backup when AD goes to the bench. With time, Lakers should be able to develop Christian into the perfect center to pair in a two-bigs lineup with Anthony Davis. Great addition to the team. Will likely get standard contract once camp is over and the Lakers create additional roster spots to add players to the 15-man roster.
Take the time to watch this video of Koloko’s defensive highlights as a Raptor 2-years ago. This kid c/b the center the Lakers need to develop to play next to Anthony Davis. Kid is tall and long and an elite jumper. He can stay with guards and block layups and threes and is an elite offensive rebounder.
I wonder how soon we will see him. He hasn’t played in over a year so I would not be surprised if he played a lot of G league during the first part of the year. Castleton may see more minutes early. Evidently he has looked good this summer. He has put on weight and muscle. Strength was his biggest weakness because he is a pretty skilled player. Between the two we have a 100 games, so until we trade for a center at least we have some depth there. In a perfect world one of them will shine enough so we won’t need a trade.
I would almost prefer developing the three young centers we have and going after a journeyman center like Valanciunas, which seems like the inevitable solution.
I still think Castleton is a year or two away but Koloko has such great defensive ability he could be a contributor this season. If he can cover center when AD rests, he could change our decision to trade. Valanciunas can’t do that. Koloko could be perfect front court mate for AD.
I would prefer to target an elite defensive guard (Marcus Smart) rather than mediocre center. Koloko can protect the rim and is a great offensive rebounder. With newbies Knecht and koloko and healthy Vincent and Vando, Lakers new head coach Redick does have some new talent to help him get Lakers back on track.
