    • Yeah I remember this game very well. It is actually one of my favorite Lakers games. What I really liked about it is the suspense that came with it. It was game 7. You lose, you go home, and this was against a stacked Portland team that could could even win it all. The season was on the line but Shaq and Kobe delivered in a magical way, making it even merrier. That was a hell of a game.

      • I was in a hospital room with my son and his wife who was expecting my first grandson to be born in about a month. Beth had just gone in for an emergency issue and we were watching the game on the TV in the hospital room without the sound on so as not to bother Beth. When Kobe made that pass to Shaq for that dunk, my son and I exploded in cheers. Never forget that game. One month later my son was born. Nick is a die hard Lakers fan even though his dad became a Warriors fan.

        • Tom, that game coincided with my younger son’s one year anniversary. This game happened with the whole house watching. It was full of Laker fans. You would think the house was going to collapse due to the magnitude of the celebration. That was an unforgettable day.

Safe to say JJ will be modernizing Lakers' offense,

    • This podcast is from Dec 2022. In this episode of The Old Man and The Three Things with JJ Redick details just how LeBron James, Anthony Davis and The Lakers are winning so much. Yes, it’s the dominant play of AD but JJ made some mad scientist charts to discuss the correlation between shooting and success in The NBA.

The main reason why I am thrilled that the Lakers are hiring JJ Redick as our new head coach is he will finally force the Lakers into modernizing their offense. The Lakers cannot win shooting just 30 threes per game. Not when teams like the Celtics are shooting 40 to 50 threes per game.

Not to minimize the importance of defense, rebounding, passing, screening, and all of the little things that are essential to winning basketball, but it’s obvious that JJ Redick is a strong believer that winning in today’s NBA depends on shooting a volume number of 3-point shots. You can counter with PIP and FTM but unless you have shooters, you’re not going to have a good half-court offense.

JJ’s charts pretty much showed that the 10 teams with the worst offenses ranked in the lower half in 3PA while the 10 teams with the best offenses ranked in the upper half in 3PA. Percentages didn’t really matter. Lakers were 13th in percentages but second to last in 3PM.

While the Lakers are going to prioritize two-way players, they’re also going to prioritize trading for players who are volume 3-point shooters. This was a point in time when the Lakers were playing well, everybody was shooting lights out, and AD was dominating.

JJ pointed out that what was important was that AD must be surrounded by shooters just like LeBron. The biggest change were going to see with JJ as head coach is the Lakers are finally going to join the 3-point revolution.

      • Tom, it was our system not our shooters. All of 3’s came from drive and kick’s and transition 3’s. We were 7th in percentage DLO shot over 40%, LeBron shot over 40’s, Rui shot over 40%, he shot 43% as starter in 39 games. Prince shot 39.8% and Austin was a respectable 36%. The key is running more action for 3 point opportunities. I don’t care who you trade for, no one would have shot a ton of 3’s in last years system. Now I don’t see them becoming Boston. We were a top points in the paint team and we led the league in free throws. Boston by the way was 26th in free throws. What I hope for is at least in the 10th to 15th range in attempts.

        • Michael, you have been saying this for several years now and I have always agreed with you that it is the system that wastes our 3-point talents. And this goes way back. Here is hopping that JJ would be able to fix that.

        • Aloha, Michael,

I do think you’re right that we need to run plays to get wide open threes. It should be a priority Lakers have never prioritized getting open threes. That’s going to change ww/JJ imo. JJ believes offense starts outside/in not inside/out like the Lakers have always played. What you run outside determines your opportunities inside, not the other way around imo.

I also think we also need proven volume shooters. It’s hard to turn a guy who takes 2 or 3 threes per game into one who takes 5 to 7 threes, which is what the Lakers need to do to go from 30 to over 35 threes per game.

When you think about it smartly, it’s the proverbial chicken and egg situation. Which should be the focus and which should be the result?

Lakers now get their threes by attacking the paint in traditional drive-and-kicks. At first glance, that makes sense since they want to attack the rim, get points in the paint, and get to the line. But it’s fighting up hilll.

What they should do if they we smart is surround LBJ and AD with better, higher volume 3-point shooters and run plays to create spacing and open threes and two things will happen:

          1. Lakers will start shooting making more threes. Don’t need to be Celtics and take 40 per game but JJ will have them in top 10 w/35+ per game.

          2. Suddenly, it will become impossible to double LeBron and AD and they will feast on single coverage or the Lakers will rain threes on them.

JJ will make Lakers New School: 3PM -> PIP
Will Finally End Lakers Old School: PIP -> 3PM

Finally, I wonder if JJ becoming coach could result in the Lakers re-signing D’Angelo Russell. DLO became a top-10 volume 3-point specialist last season. I think JJ increases odds Lakers keep DLO.

          • Guys have upped their 3 point attempts all across the league. It’s not unusual. Rui for instance shot 3.4 for the season but 4 as a starter. I don’t think 5 or 6 is a huge stretch. He also scored 16.7 as a starter, shot 43.9% from 3 as a starter, and 57% from the field. And his defense really improved after he started. Not bad for a 5th option. The word is that he is not being shopped and it makes sense unless it’s for an all star. Darvin really screwed with him. Austin and DLO.

            • The problem imo was how the three starters surrounding LeBron and AD were unable to make a three in the Denver series. I still believe we need to upgrade at least two of our three role player starters. DLO and AR cannot start together. We need a true 3&D wing or second big, even if it forces LeBron to have to play more three. Be fun to see how the offense changes with JJ. Hiring him was the biggest move of this summer regardless of what we do with personnel. It’s the move we desperately needed as a franchise. A visionary who will take us into the modern NBA,

The Los Angeles Lakers are zeroing in on JJ Redick as the front-runner to be the franchise’s next head coach, league and media industry sources told The Athletic.

No final decision has been made yet, and the Lakers still have steps remaining in their head-coaching search process, league sources said. But the indications are strong that Redick is their leading choice at this stage.

The Lakers’ search has been seriously focused on two candidates — Redick and Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego — over the last couple of weeks, league sources said.

Redick was the first candidate to have a face-to-face meeting with the Lakers three weeks ago, and Borrego did an in-person interview with Lakers officials for a second time last week and the franchise has been impressed with him during the process, according to team sources. Anthony Davis and Borrego, who overlapped briefly in New Orleans, have also built a rapport recently.

Redick, a media analyst, is serving as a color commentator for the NBA Finals, which start Thursday night in Boston, fueling belief around the NBA that a potential hiring would officially take place and be announced after the series.

The Lakers have had interviews with several other candidates as well, including Celtics assistant Sam Cassell, Heat assistant Chris Quinn, Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori and Nuggets assistant David Adelman.

Multiple sources briefed on the matter said one person who has become a respected unofficial resource for the Lakers during the process is legendary former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, whose deep knowledge of candidates, such as Redick and others, provides a lens into the culture the organization wants and the characteristics of a potential staff around the next head coach.

Krzyzewski’s history with the Lakers goes back to 2004 when Dr. Jerry Buss made a strong yet unsuccessful offer to hire Coach K. Redick played for Krzyzewski at Duke from 2002 to 2006.

The Lakers have been seeking a coach who has the potential and staying power to be their head man for now and the long-term, as someone who will command the locker room and hold players accountable, as well as tirelessly gameplan and provide a level of structure and organization, according to those sources. It’s believed the franchise views Redick as the candidate who can check those boxes, those sources said.

Sources have described Lakers officials as “infatuated” with Redick and his potential as a coach.

Redick has yet to coach above the youth level. He’s the most forward-facing of the candidates given his high-profile playing career, run as a media personality and his recent “Mind the Game” podcast with LeBron James. Nevertheless, James has made it known that he is staying out of the team’s coaching search, according to people involved in the matter.

Redick played 15 seasons in the NBA with six teams, most notably the Orlando Magic and LA Clippers. A renowned shooter, he posted a career average of 12.8 points per game with 41.5 percent 3-point shooting, 44.7 percent from the field and 89.2 percent from the free-throw line.

      • The salary is about the best part of him coming to the Lakers. But honestly, he a floor spacing big on many a bad team. To expect him to do anything more than that is foolhardy unless you’re irrationally convinced that another 3 point chucker will fix everything. Still doesn’t do anything about the gaping holes in the defensive backcourt, 0 defense on the wings, and a cap situation that won’t let them do much about it.

        • Signing a player who makes only $17M allows the Lakers to have matching salary and cap space under the tax aprons to trade to upgrade other positions.

Additionally, there is no better big to pair with AD in a two-bigs lineup than Lauri Markkanen. He should be Lakers top target in the entire league.

    • “And then it came down to Anthony Davis or Victor Wembanyama for the final spot. I know, I know that the Lakers are in the play-in. I can’t deny that Anthony Davis had an outstanding individual season. The defensive numbers for the Lakers as a team are not great. They’ve been basically right around league average all year. But his impact defensively, particularly protecting the paint, at the rim, all of the metrics says he’s been a top-10 defender at that position. You factor in that with 25 (points) and 12 (rebounds), a boost in assists this year, Anthony Davis gets the final spot on my Third Team All-NBA.”

“If I’m the Los Angeles Lakers, I need to get LeBron James out in transition. I need transition buckets. The shooters, Austin Reaves, Taurean Prince, Rui Hachimura, of course D’Angelo Russell, who has had an incredible season, they have to shoot the ball well. Denver, good 3-point shooting team, not a high volume 3-point shooting team. Can they win the 3-point battle there? Fast break, can they win that there?”

      • JJ could want to keep DLO for his 3-point shooting. Hard to become a better 3-point shooting team if you let DLO walk.

Lakers among teams interested in trading for Lauri Markkanen

“There are a few teams that, when you look at it, he is going to be their dream target,” the general manager told Heavy Sports. “The Lakers, you get a guy like him with Anthony Davis, and that’s perfect for both guys. The [New York] Knicks would love to get hold of him. The [Miami] Heat, again, put him with Bam [Adebayo] and that is the pair you want to build around, you can send Jimmy [Butler] wherever he wants.

“Just the floor-spacing aspect of it, it’s so valuable. He could make things easier on your stars.”

    • Lakers either need to sign DLO to new contract or sign-and-trade him. Cannot allow him to walk for nothing like Caruso.

      • I agree. But I wonder if DLO would want too if he is offered similar money, knowing that he is a trade asset for however long he is a Laker.

        • The market will tell him. I still say the Lakers should promise him a new 2-year sign-and-trade at $21M per year if he’ll opt into his players option for this year.

Frankly, Lakers need to keep both DLO and AR (move AR to bench) and use the 2029 and 2031 picks to add new 3&D guard and 3&D wing upgraded starters with size who really defend.

Use the picks for them and use #17 for a backup center like Filipowski or Ware.

    • I’m not in favor of trading for Trae because of his $43M per year contract but including Olynyk and not using the #17 pick, which the Lakers could use for a backup center, and keeping Vincent would give the Lakers strength at both point guard and center.

      • This is a pretty damn good lineup before adding minimum salary players:

        PG: Trae Young, Gabe Vincent
        SG: Max Christie, Cam Reddish
        SF: LeBron James, Maxwell Lewis
        PF: Kelly Olynyk, Christian Wood
        CE; Anthony Davis, Kyle Filipowski

        • Same thing I said last summer…that backcourt ain’t getting it done come playoff time. It’ll get us through the regular season but that’s about it.

      • Lakers also reduce payroll by $7.4M and remain under the first cap so they would have around $10M to spend on a free agent while still staying under the first tax apron for minimal luxury tax.

    • Pretty much all of our moves depend on what D.Russell decides to do. I’m not confident he’s gonna do us any favors.

      • No, but he may do himself a favor by accepting his player option if he has no offers better than the NTMLE. Personally, I think the Lakers need to re-sign or S&T him. We can’t lose him for nothing.

    • Giving too much?

    • Read this one yesterday. Wasn’t impressed then, either. Just don’t see the 3 superstar model working for us if we give up all our guys under contract.

The new CBA really only allows you to build a “super team” with guys you already have under contract. Otherwise we’re stuck with some version of the AARP team from a couple seasons back.

Minimum dudes can get you through the regular season kind of OK. How many vet minimum guys have shined at any pint during the playoffs? I can’t think of any.

A shortcuts in sport rarely work out. Rob has been trying to get back to the team he had ever since he gave it all away for Russ. That one’s still reverberating.

      • Click baiters keep trying to trade Young to LA. They thought about him a second before switching to Murray. Fit is as important as talent and I can’t think of any guards that would be a worse fit then Young. Besides his horrendous defense, young is one of the most ball dominant guards in the NBA. To play on a LeBron team you have to be able to play off the ball. Young needs the ball to succeed. People have been trying to take the ball out of Lebrons hands for a while now. That’s never going to happen. LeBron will play like LeBron until he hangs it up.

        • One more point. We were the 6th highest scoring team in the league last year. We outscored the Mavs, Nuggets and TWolves. Those are the 3 most concerning teams. Our needs clearly on the defensive end. So why bring in a no defense offensive player? Especially giving up our best perimeter defender. That trade would result in quite possibly the worst defense in the league.

        • Trae Young is the epitome of what the Lakers do NOT want. Poor defense, injury prone…not a physical player. I feel that Trae Young has been aiming for the Lakers since he was trying to hang around Kobe’s daughter. He doesn’t have the smooth PR skills needed to be a star in LA that could deal with the media. And LA media is nowhere as hard as New York media. He’s got small market star written all over him. I have been in favor of Murray for his ability to play with other star on the same team. Murray is far better defensively. Murray is more reliable health wise than Zach Lavine…so I’d much prefer Murray, but not at price that would gut the core of the team. I’d keep Reaves, and would be willing to trade only one of the two others (Hachimura or Russell)…toss in Hood-Schifino, and minimal draft assets. I haven’t done the math, but others do.

With the Lakers currently set at guard, I mostly avoided backcourt players.

For our purposes, after talking this through with talent evaluators from multiple NBA teams, I’m going to break them into a few different categories.

    The investments

Kyle Kuzma, Deni Avdija, Malcolm Brogdon, Keldon Johnson, Bruce Brown, Dorian Finney-Smith

In all of these scenarios, the Lakers are almost certainly sending out at least one first-round pick, and to make salaries match, players from a group of Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt and Gabe Vincent (and maybe D’Angelo Russell if he exercises his player option). And remember, those are the kinds of players the Lakers acquired for the same reasons that they’d now be targeting guys from this group.

    The ready-made, free-agent wings

Isaac Okoro, Naji Marshall, Buddy Hield, Kelly Oubre Jr.

    The bargain bigs

    Day’Ron Sharpe, Xavier Tillman

    The big swings

    Chuma Okeke, KJ Martin

The Los Angeles Lakers are looking for their next head coach. As they are in the process of evaluating and interviewing the candidates, one name has emerged as the frontrunner: JJ Redick.

The latest reporting suggests that the Lakers are absolutely enamored with the idea of hiring the former Duke star as the franchise’s next head coach. The talks have advanced so far that Redick is reportedly already working on building his coaching staff.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Redick is seeking experienced assistant coaches to help him in his first coaching stint.

Stein reports that Redick is targeting Sam Cassell, James Borrego, and Jared Dudley as his assistants if he were to get the Lakers job.

Cassell and Borrego have already been rumored for the head coaching vacancies around the league, including the Lakers. They are certainly the two of the most experienced and respected assistant coaches in the NBA. If they can’t get a head coaching gig elsewhere, they would presumably be interested in being a high-profile assistant under Redick.

Dudley, on the other hand, is not as experienced as Borrego and Cassell. Ever since he retired as a Laker three years ago, the 38-year-old has been an assistant coach with the Mavericks under Jason Kidd.

Considering that Redick has no prior coaching experience, his assistant coaches will play a big role for the Lakers. Therefore, going for more experienced names is certainly understandable.

There should similarly be a ton of interest in working under Redick. If things were to not work out for the 39-year old in Los Angeles, whoever is his top assistant will be the favorite to be the next head coach.

There has been plenty of speculation that LeBron James is the one who is advocating for the Redick hiring. The two friends have been co-hosting a podcast together for the past few months and James is known to respect Redick’s basketball intelligence. Whether that will translate to success in coaching remains to be seen.

    • One of the weakest drafts in recent memory

    • Not only is this draft projected as weak but it seems like half of the lottery teams are looking to trade their picks. #17pick will not have nowhere near the value of post-LeBron 2029 and 2031picks. Since Lakers likely not looking for 3rd star, they should use pick.

Ironically, there are 4 or 5 legitimate quality center prospects projected to be drafted 15 to 25 who could be excellent fits for the Lakers. Filipowski, Edey, Ware, and Holmes should all be avaialble when the Lakers pick at #17. I’d take Filipowski.
