Lakers, essential assembly with JJ Redick over the weekend

JJ Redick and the Los Angeles Lakers will meet this weekend to speak in regards to the function of the yellow and purple coach, as reported ESPN.

Redick already spoke at size with GM Rob Pelinka final month in the course of the draft mix in Chicago.

The former Duke must clarify intimately his plans to restart the Lakers, in entrance of Pelinka and proprietor Jeanie Buss.

The earlier dialogue between the yellow and purple and Hurley wouldn’t be an issue, which is nicely positioned for the appointment of a guard with 15 seasons of expertise within the NBA.

James Borrego, one other long-term choice for the Lakers, can be nearer to the Cavaliers bench.

The Front Office plan stays the identical regardless of Hurley’s failure to reach: construct a training workers with the expansion of Max Christie, Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura among the many most essential components, and they’re able to profit from the presence of Anthony Davis in each. on the perimeters of the sphere.

    • Eagerly awaiting news of JJ meeting with Lakers, especially with AD. JJ has said AD is not an alpha player, with which I agree. Will be interesting seeing how AD reacts to that judgement.

Educated Guesses On Potential Early NBA Signings

    Chris Paul to Lakers, Finally

Spoiler: LeBron James will headline the final slide of these re-signings (with the Lakers).

With that in mind, along with the Warriors ducking as much luxury tax as possible, Chris Paul isn’t going to get his non-guaranteed $30 million from Golden State.

Once he clears waivers, put Paul, finally, on the Lakers at a $3.3 million minimum contract.

The 39-year-old can come off the bench or even start, though the Lakers will need to limit his minutes, given he’s just a few months younger than the oldest player in the league (James, 40 in December).

While L.A. needs to infuse the roster with youth, the team also needs smart, veteran players. Paul was almost a Laker in 2011, but the deal was scuttled by David Stern, the late NBA commissioner who was operating as the owner of the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans) before it was sold to the Benson family.

Paul never got to play with Kobe Bryant and the Lakers, but now he gets the chance to don the purple and gold alongside James.

Redick Will Also Be Interviewing Lakers on Saturday

    • From the above article:

J.J. Redick will interview with the Los Angeles Lakers for their head coaching vacancy this weekend. While the Lakers will interview Redick, there will also be an interview being conducted by the candidate of the employer.

“I have no doubt that J.J. is going to have a strong performance because he’s been preparing for this for a long time,” said Brian Windhorst on Friday morning. “I think the question that’s being asked here is how much should J.J. really want this job? And that’s one of the reasons why I think there’s people in his life, in fact, I know there’s people in his life, who have said ‘Are you sure this is the opportunity you want? That this is what you want to leave for? Because this is such a challenging job.’

“Head coach of the Lakers is one of the four or five most desirable coaching jobs in all of sports. You’re talking about head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, manager of the Yankees, manager of Real Madrid…The Lakers are on that list.

“But J.J.’s got to hear from their franchise, from Rob Pelinka what their intentions are. How do they see life after LeBron James? How are they going to spend with these aprons in this new environment? What are their plans for their roster in this offseason? What can they do to help increase from their seventh place finish?

“This isn’t just a one-way interview. J.J. Redick has a great job. He has a great future. He could wait for three or four more head coaching opportunities in the next year or two, but that’s one of the big things that is going to come out of the conversations over the weekend, I would expect.”

      • What interests me most is what will be JJ’s plans to optimize AD. That’s going to be the major focus of his presentation since the Lakers clearly want to hire a coach who can connect and get the most out of the team’s superstar for the next 5 to 7 years.

Second would be what does JJ want to do with DLO. I would love to see the Lakers re-sign D’Angelo and pair him with Dejounte Murray with Austin Reaves moving to bench as 6MOY candidate. We need to shoot high 30’s in 3PA. Hard to do that w/o DLO.

    • Murray is a player the Lakers should prioritize. He’s an affordable two-way player with a clutch/Klutch gene. Lakers were hesitant in the past to give up picks or Reaves for him. While I want to keep Reaves, I’d give up a FRP and a swap to get DJM. Great contract – 4 yrs starting at $24.8M – allows you to build around him. He could become superstar on Lakers.

I assume the Hawks prefer to keep Trae Young because ownership has an affinity for him. Moreover, he’s the more dynamic player and has already proven capable of leading a team deep into the playoffs. He’s box office; people have just seemingly forgotten what he’s capable of because this organization can’t build a roster worth a damn around him.

However, the Hawks aren’t just going to trade Murray for the sake of it. NBA insider Brett Siegel says that a package of numerous draft assets and talent will be the cost for Murray.

“Murray, who Atlanta made available at the trade deadline this past regular season, won’t be traded just for the sake of the organization making a move this offseason,” Siegel writes. “If the Hawks are to move on from Murray, it will be in a package that nets them numerous draft assets and talent to surround Young and the incoming No. 1 overall pick.”

I’m not quite sure what kind of market Dejounte Murray will garner, but a few clubs should be interested, which could always drive the price up. He’s a big point guard that is still a plus defender despite taking a step back in that department last season. Murray is coming off the best shooting season of his career and is on a very team-friendly deal that kicks in this season.

Five Reasons Why J.J. Redick Is Right Pick As Lakers Head Coach of Future

Despite tormenting moments of sorrow and angst, the Los Angeles Lakers are on the verge of a momentous franchise-defining move as they prepare to hire J.J. Redick to be their head coach of the future and next Pat Riley.

After a dismal season that ended in the Lakers’ disappointing first round ‘gentlemen’s sweep’ by the Nuggets, Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka fired Darvin Ham and announced they were looking for their next legacy coach.
Two months earlier, when it was starting to become obvious to everybody that he was not happy with Lakers’ head coach Darvin Ham, LeBron James started a podcast called ‘Mind the Game’ with none other than JJ Redick.

LeBron said he started the podcast with JJ Redick because he was tired of the overdone ‘barbershop debate’ approach to sports shows and wanted to teach the NBA’s fans “what the game of basketball really, truly means.”
The irony that the ‘Mind the Game’ podcasts served to display to the NBA and the Lakers’ front office just how ready JJ Redick was to become a head coach has not been missed. Just a coincidence or LeBron James LeGM?

Brian Windhorst recently said JJ Redick’s podcasts with LeBron James were essentially interviews for the Lakers job as well as a confirmation from the King should the Lakers decide to hire him as their next new head coach.
“They’ve extensively broken down the Lakers’ offense, extensively broken down what they do. It’s been out there for the whole world to hear, including the Lakers’ front office.” No wonder, L.A. zeroed in on Redick.

While LeBron has denied being involved in the Lakers’ decision to hire a new head coach, there’s no question he’s made sure everyone knew he thought JJ was a true basketball savant and potential great head coach.
But to his credit, Bron didn’t hesitate to text Dan Hurley and let him know he was not leaving L.A. and would love to have him as the Lakers’ next head coach. Bron’s likes to exert his influence without picking a favorite.

While the Lakers job scares many, JJ’s embraced the challenge and loves the opportunity to become the team’s next great head coach. Here are five reasons why JJ Redick is the right pick as L.A.’s head coach of the future.

    1. Redick Is Only Candidate With Legacy Potential

Despite being turned down by NCAA championship coach Danny Hurley, the Lakers’ primary goal is still to find the franchise’s next great head coach to build a modern championship identity and culture in the new NBA.

J.J. Redick is the only candidate for the Lakers’ head coach position who possesses the charisma, leadership, and basketball intelligence to become the franchise’s next legacy coach in the mold of Pat Riley or Phil Jackson.
Once Danny Hurley declined their offer, the Lakers immediately turned back to JJ Redick instead of James Borrego or any of the available NBA assistants like the Nuggets’ David Adelman or Timberwolves’ Micah Nori.

Whether you believe he was a gift from the basketball gods or the result of a grand scheme by LeBron James, JJ Redick is the Lakers only candidate who has the star power or basketball mind of a Pat Riley or Phil Jackson.

    2. The NBA Is Undergoing a Changing of the Guard

There’s no question the NBA’s undergoing a changing of the guard where older players, coaches, and teams are being replaced by younger players, coaches, and teams. This is not your father’s or grandfather’s NBA.

The Lakers have prioritized player development as a main focus of their new head coach. Just three years away from playing in the league, JJ has the elite communication skills to get young players to buy into his system.
Hiring a 39-year old recently-retired former player like Redick, who since transformed himself into a respected basketball analyst and podcaster, is a smart and savvy way to connect to the new generation of NBA players.

It helps when you’re from the same generation and speak same language. Building a championship identity and culture starts with hiring a head coach like JJ who can command respect and win the support of the players.

    3. Former Players Have Advantages As Head Coaches

The Lakers dodged a serious bullet when Danny Hurley declined their offer because his having never played or coached in the NBA was likely a greater handicap than JJ Redick’s having never coached other than at youth level.

While having played in the league is not a requirement to become a good or great head coach, there’s no question it’s a clear major advantage JJ Redick has over Danny Hurley, James Borrego, David Adelman, and Micah Nori.
The coaching transition from college to the NBA has proven to be difficult because the players are rich men and not college kids and the transition from assistant to head coach requires a completely different set of talents.

JJ Redick’s experience as an NBA player and analyst/podcaster gives him clear advantages over candidates who never played in the league. Former players are more easily accepted and better understand roster dynamics.

    4. Redick Will Embrace NBA 3-Point Revolution

Hiring a head coach who built his brand as a volume 3-point sniper is the best way to guarantee the Lakers will fully embrace the 3-point revolution that’s transformed how basketball games are played and won in the NBA.

The Lakers ranked 27th out of 30 NBA teams by averaging just 31.4 3-point attempts per game last season. Despite the 8th best average of 37.7%, the Lakers still only finished 24th with only 11.8 made 3-pointers per game.
The teams in the finals — the Celtics and Mavericks — finished 1st and 3rd in made 3-pointers per game with 16.5 and 14.8 respectively, which means they score 14.1 or 9.0 more points per game from deep than the Lakers.

JJ Redick understands that the Lakers need to take between 35 to 40 threes per game to be competitive in the modern NBA. Under Redick, the Lakers will finally run plays and try to add players who can take and make threes.

    5. Redick Is Built For the Bright Lights of L.A.

JJ Redick’s 3-year career as an NBA analyst and professional podcaster makes him uniquely qualified to be deal with the scorching press, media spotlight, and bright lights that come with the Lakers’ head coaching job.

From his role as part of ESPN’s Finals crew to his ‘Mind the Game’ podcasts with LeBron James and his Old Man and the Three podcasts, JJ has shown he has the charisma, quick intelligence, and charm to manage the media.
As we saw with Darvin Ham and previous Lakers coaches, being able to hold your own in post game pressers is critical. The Lakers’ press can smell blood in the water like hungry sharks. Having a media pro like JJ is a plus.

Unlike Danny Hurley, JJ Redick has not wavered in his desire and belief that he can be the Lakers’ next great head coach. Like Kobe said, it takes a certain kind of person to embrace the L.A. experience. JJ is built for L.A.

JJ Redick and the Los Angeles Lakers are set to meet again this weekend to discuss the franchise’s vacant head-coaching position, team and league sources confirmed.

Redick, a 39-year-old former NBA player, has been considered the front-runner in league circles for most of the coaching search. That briefly changed last week when Connecticut coach Dan Hurley and the Lakers expressed mutual interest before Hurley interviewed in Los Angeles on Friday. He rejected the Lakers’ six-year, $70 million offer on Monday, according to team and league sources.

The Lakers’ brass regrouped Tuesday and began circling back to candidates, including Redick, according to team and league sources. The ESPN commentator and podcaster previously met with vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka for nearly two hours the week of May 13 at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago.

ESPN first reported the meeting taking place this weekend. Redick has been on the broadcast for the NBA Finals, which could end as soon as Friday if the Boston Celtics complete a sweep of the Dallas Mavericks.

New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego has been the other central candidate over the past few weeks. Borrego met with Pelinka in person in Los Angeles on May 20 for over two hours. He also met with Lakers stakeholders at the team’s practice facility on May 29. Anthony Davis and Borrego, who overlapped briefly in New Orleans, have also built a rapport recently. Yahoo reported Wednesday that Borrego is also advancing in the head-coaching search with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Lakers’ plan of having a coach in place by the June 26 NBA Draft — and ideally sooner — remains unchanged, according to team and league sources.

As The Athletic previously reported, the Lakers are high on Redick’s potential and view the 15-year NBA veteran as a Pat Riley-like coaching prospect, according to league sources. Redick checks many of the boxes on the Lakers’ extensive checklist for their next coach.

Redick has yet to coach above the youth level. He’s the most forward-facing of the candidates given his high-profile playing career, run as a media personality and his recent “Mind the Game” podcast with LeBron James. Nevertheless, James has made it known that he is staying out of the team’s coaching search, according to people involved in the matter.

The coaching hire is pivotal as Los Angeles hopes to retain James, who must decide whether to exercise his $51.4 million player option for the 2024-25 season by June 29. The Lakers are open to any contract structure that will keep James in Los Angeles, league sources told The Athletic.

Multiple sources briefed on the matter said one person who has become a respected unofficial resource for the Lakers during the process is legendary former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, whose deep knowledge of candidates, such as Redick and others, provides a lens into the culture the organization wants and the characteristics of a potential staff around the next head coach.

Krzyzewski’s history with the Lakers goes back to 2004 when Dr. Jerry Buss made a strong yet unsuccessful offer to hire Coach K. Redick played for Krzyzewski at Duke from 2002 to 2006.

Redick spent 15 seasons in the NBA with six teams, most notably the Orlando Magic and LA Clippers. A renowned shooter, he posted a career average of 12.8 points per game with 41.5 percent 3-point shooting, 44.7 percent from the field and 89.2 percent from the free-throw line.

    • JJ will need to impress Anthony Davis with his plans for how to best use him at both ends of the court. That should be the focus of his interviews on Saturday. Future of Lakers is Anthony Davis. JJ will adddress this.

I’m hoping JJ will embrace AD as power forward who shoots threes rather than just as a center. Get a starting quality big to pair with AD so he can play his preferred position and Lakers get bigger and bullier.

Lakers need to copy what the Celtics did and upgrade their other starters, focus on two-way players who can switch everything on D and shoot threes on O, embrace the 3-point revolution and modernize Lakers’ offense. Spend those picks to upgrade other three starters.

      • HI Tom. I agree with you 100% on the basketball Gods analogy. You can almost see the whole thing playing out in slow motion in favor of JJ.
As for Hurley, he should be grateful that the Lakers had doubled his value just by being in the picture. He doesn’t need to run an ad in the Washington Post or the New York Times. His value has jumped to the 10th degree. Good for him.

JJ Redick interviewing for Lakers coaching job this weekend

JJ Redick will formally interview for the Los Angeles Lakers’ coaching job this weekend, and a strong performance is expected to move him to the forefront of the franchise’s search, sources told ESPN.

Redick, an ESPN NBA analyst who played 15 years in the league, had a 90-plus-minute visit with Lakers vice president and general manager Rob Pelinka last month at the Chicago draft combine. Now, a trip to Los Angeles will go far deeper into detail on the job and the meetings will include Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss, sources said.

Pelinka and Redick have talked on the phone in recent days, and Redick understands and accepts Pelinka’s lengthy pursuit of Connecticut coach Dan Hurley that initially stalled Redick’s candidacy, sources said.

As New Orleans Pelicans assistant James Borrego’s candidacy gains traction in Cleveland, Redick has a chance to make his case in an all-day session with Pelinka, Buss and other senior decision-makers in Los Angeles, sources said.

As Pelinka did with Hurley, he still wants a teaching coach and staff who will prioritize the development of young players such as Max Christie, Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura and can design a creative approach to featuring Anthony Davis on both ends of the floor, sources said. Redick has a strong relationship with Lakers star LeBron James, with whom he co-hosts a basketball podcast.

Redick is the lead analyst for ESPN’s game coverage and is currently working the Boston Celtics-Dallas Mavericks NBA Finals series.

    • I think the Lakers dodged what could have been a killer bullet because there college guys always think they can translate what they do in the NCAA to the NBA but the game and the players are completely different, which is why very few college coaches have been able to make the transition successfully.

As to more money making a difference, I’m amazed at how so many Lakers fans don’t understand the difference between a competitive offer and a Godfather offer that you cannot refuse. 6-years $70M was a competitive offer. The situation clearly called for a Godfather offer if any at all, e.g. 6 years $100M. I’d bet Hurley would have taken that offer.

There’s a distinct possibility that the reason the Lakers did not offer $100M is because they were concerned about whether going for a college coach was the right move. I think Hurley would have a lot tougher job coaching the Lakers than Redick because the NBA is JJ’s area of expertise whereas it would all be new for Hurley.

Bottom line, thankfully the basketball gods are watching over the Lakers.

      • My only concern about Hurley is his style of screaming at his players. It works for college-level but it might not work in the pros. Anyway, let us all get behind JJ.
As for me, I can’t wait to see how he is going to motivate the players. I will support him 100%, but I also would like to see who his assistants are, hopefully, we end up with some brilliant minds. Does anybody want Phil Handy back?

    • That new billionaire owner in Phoenix would have overpaid him. And Hurley might have lasted a whole year…or not.
At least our roster is in better shape than PHX.
As always, it’s the players who matter, and when they don’t meet expectations, the coach takes the fall. If they give Redick the job (or anyone else intriguing), there will be the usual excitement, followed by the ride, and then the inevitable firing. All you can do is hope for the best.

      • “As always, it’s the players who matter, and when they don’t meet expectations, the coach takes the fall.”

I have posted the same thing during the season. It all comes down to the players you have, though the coaches should be held accountable for the strategies they come up with. Other times players respond well to a new voice, and that’s were a change of coach becomes necessary.
