    • I would like to see the Lakers negotiate a new contract with DLO. Maybe less money for more years. Cannot lose him for nothing to free agency. JJ should want to keep him. DLO w/b hard to replace.

      • How many more times do we need to see D.Russell play well in the regular season then stink it up in the playoffs? If he walks straight into Orlando’s cap space that’ll be a final F.U. to us.

        • Better to re-sign him and then trade him at the deadline. Otherwise, we lose him for nothing to free agency. Be very interested to see what JJ’s input on DLO w/b. Will tell us a lot about his priorities as head coach.

Orlando is likely to go after Klay Thompson before DLO and they supposedly do not want to pay more than he is making now. So there could be possibility of a S&T with Orlando. Jonathan Isaac makes $17.4M which is not guaranteed.

I’d love to trade DLO for Isaac. That could be a win-win for both teams. Isaac w/b great fit and can play 3/4/5 and stretch the court. Get CLO on a 1-year deal w/b better than letting him walk.

        • But don’t try to make it seem like we are in control of this situation. It’s more up to D.Russell than anyone else. ORL would be foolish to throw a buncha money at broken-down Klay.

          • It’s really the market that will determine what DLO does. The Lakers have two choices.

First is to do nothing and hope the market is so bad that DLO wants to lock up that $18M PO.

Second, is to negotiate with him and reach an agreement on maybe him opting in and getting a 2-year extension for $40M total.

Then we have a tradable asset at the deadline and don’t lose DLO for nada. And maybe just maybe JJ Redick can help him solve his playoff issues. Who knows. Hard to replace the vol 3-pt shooting and playmaking he provides.

We can control situation and get better outcome, even if it’s just a midseason trade.

          • Magic might be smarter to go after Klay than DLO. They want player for playoffs as well as regular season.

    • Celts set up far better to win another one before us…..

      • And they have ownership that cares more about winning than bottom line. Bucks really fucked themselves when they traded for Dame and let Jrue go. They’re going to lose Giannis at some point.

      • And they have a plan and a grown-up in the room. This is what I was talking about in the Jerry West thread yesterday. When there are questions about the Lakers being cheap, it’s not just about the roster and the cap. The feeling around the league is that or FO is not as robust as most others. It’s thin.

        • You’re preaching to the choir, Mongo. It is what it is and it’s not going to change. That’s why the best we can hope for is the team hires a brilliant young coach who will become the visionary and the adult in the room we need.

At least we’ve overcome our fear of thinking big and out-of-the-box. I’m glad we pursued Hurley even though I don’t think he was right for the job.

While we can’t know until he does it, I like Redick, the kind of player he was, and the kind of analyst he has become. He hopefully has the charisma, manic work ethic, and insightful judgment to be our next Pat Riley or Phil Jackson.

        • And here’s my response to that….we’re not think “big & outside the box” with this hire. We’re simply trying to replicate a move from the past….Pat Riley. This ain’t new. And the difference (other than Jerry West) is that he had a buncha dudes and future HOFers in their primes and the cap rules were different. JayJay’s got a 40yr old Lebron and AD….that’s pretty much it. It is ALOT to ask from a guy who’s never coached a day in his life to overcome all that. He doesn’t even know what he doesn’t know.

Pat Riley didn’t become Pat Riley by himself. He walked into a far better situation that already had a great roster and healthy infrastructure (which he was already a part of) that allowed him to become great. He wasn’t asked to do it all on his own. That’s why I don’t like the comparison.

    • Who is deserving more of an asterisk?
      1. Lakers’ Championship in the Bubble:
The Lakers won the NBA championship during the 2019-2020 season, which took place in the NBA bubble due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some people placed an asterisk on their victory because the circumstances were unique, with games played without fans and in a controlled environment.
However, the Lakers still faced tough competition and performed exceptionally well.
      2. Celtics’ Path to Victory:
This year, the Celtics had a relatively easy path to the championship.
While they built a strong roster, their opponents faced challenges such as injuries, health protocols, and other external factors.
The lack of formidable competition may lead some to question the legitimacy of their title.
      3. Dallas Mavericks’ Disappointment:
The Dallas Mavericks, despite havinga stars like Luka Doncic, and Kyrie, underperformed in the NBA Finals.
Their lackluster performance contributed to the overall perception that this year’s finals were less exciting.
In summary, both the Lakers’ bubble championship and the Celtics’ recent victory have unique circumstances. While asterisks can be debated, it’s essential to recognize that external factors impact every season. Ultimately, sports fans will have varying opinions on what deserves an asterisk, but the game continues to evolve, and each team faces its own challenges. But to be honest, this year’s finals has been the most boring to me. 🏀🌟

    • Yes we did DJ. Even though Tatum was the consensus best player in the draft, Magic thought Lonzo would be a great Hollywood story. Local boy makes good. Actually the staff wanted Tatum and even preferred Fox over Lonzo. Just one of the many huge mistakes the Laker management have made.

      • That’s what I thought. I saw Tatum and Fox play college alot here in Indyland. Only thing about Lonzo is he couldn’t shoot a lick.

    • we would’ve traded him in the AD deal anyway…..

The passing of Jerry West put some things in perspective for me in terms of the current situation the Lakers find themselves in. The 1st thing folks want to do is compare JayJay Redick to Pat Riley or Steve Kerr or even Eric Spoelstra. But what we fail to realize is the common thread that runs through Riles & Kerr and ultimately to Spo (thru Riles) is Jerry West. I don’t think they have the same success without that guiding hand, mentorship, and presence in that office down the hallway. I hated the way he was portrayed in that Winning Time series (hell, just about everyone came out looking bad in that thing) but you can really tell how influential the man was when you read the tributes by the guys who worked under him (Ty Lue included).

So now I look at JayJay as a potential coach. No doubt, he has a good “basketball mind” (most guys who spent their life in the game do) but who’s gonna be his Jerry West? That part really eats at me. I suspect that it may be one of many reasons for Hurley turning down the job. Who’s gonna be the architect of the future? Who has the plan? Is there a plan? If you say Rob Pelinka then…..we got a problem. We tried to compare him to Bob Myers…but guess what? Jerry West mentored him too!!!!!

Sometimes it just feels like we need a grown-up in the room.

    • You make so many good points, Mongo. As the son of an entrepreneur, I can understand why Jeanie wants to hold onto the Lakers and her role as the franchise’s governor and final decision maker. She has her network of trustworthy allies and it’s doubtful that will change for the foreseeable future.

We can wish she would see how hiring Bob Myers to take over could double the value of the Lakers but the best we can do is hope they hire a coach who somehow someway can turn out to be a legacy coach who will provide the team with an identity and develop a championship culture and chemistry.

For me, that’s where JJ Redick comes in. Of course, he’s the typical out-of-the-box both logical and risky solutions everybody knows I love but I give Rob and Jeanie credit for being inspired. There will obviously be lots of bumps along the way but I think JJ is exactly the kind of person who could be the visionary we need.

I do agree he needs a visionary. I’m sure there will be some discussions the next few days with the Finals all but over about staff. Be great to have Stan Van Gundy, whom JJ played for, maybe as that mentor/lead assistant. Also might be good to have somebody who is great as a defensive coordinator to balance JJ’s obvious offensive bent.

Anyway, I’m thrilled. We’re lucky to have avoided Hurley imo and JJ will modernize our offense and take and make a lot more threes w/o sacrificing PIP & FTM.

      • Something I didn’t notice until recently, but we had the #2 scoring offense in the West last season. That wasn’t the problem; it was the defense.

As for JayJay…I just don’t see how he’s suddenly considered to be some kinda Messiah of Basketball. I give a ton of credit to his agent & PR team. I’ve watched the podcast…nothing revolutionary there. Basketball Xs & Os aren’t that complicated cuz there just aren’t that many moving pieces. Pick & Roll has been around since the game was invented and it’s still damn near unstoppable when run correctly. Schemes are only gonna get you so far.

Meyers would be great but again…why take this job right now? With the new apron rules and our lack of assets, it’s gonna be a struggle to build as long as Lebron & AD are getting paid. I feel like front offices will have to retool their strategies in this new environment. Presti has OKC in perfect position with all those picks and if I were a brand new head coach that’s the type of situation I’d be looking for. Hurley will be great because he has shown he has a knack for picking talent that fits what he’s doing and can deal with his coaching style….that’s a quality that’s more important than Xs & Os to me. He needs a team where he can start from scratch and guaranteed time to build it up & establish a culture. Lakers ain’t that.

    Devin Carter interest

In the same answer where he discussed the Lakers having interest in trading up, Fischer also discussed Devin Carter, a prospect the purple and gold are very interested in.

“Devin Carter, a Providence guard, he seems to be someone that the Lakers seem to like. I’ve been told that would be his absolute floor. I don’t think he’ll get anywhere close. I don’t think he’s getting out of lottery, let alone even out of the top 10.”

This isn’t the first time the Lakers and Carter have been linked. The team reportedly hosted him for a pre-draft workout.

However, the big issue here is that Carter is likely to be gone by pick No. 17. This, perhaps, is then linked to the Lakers’ desire to trade up in the draft, which feels like the only realistic way to draft Carter.

On DraftExpress, Carter is projected at pick No. 12. The latest mock draft from The Athletic has Carter slated to go at pick No. 8.

It seems the only way the Lakers could get Carter is trading up for him. And it would be quite the odd decision to trade up in the draft for a guard when the roster has a dearth of them already.

    • I feel like the Lakers are going to draft Edey if he’s available at 17. He’s going to be a massive matchup nightmare. If he avoid being a massive liability, he could become a valuable player for the Lakers. I love that he gets to the line 8 times a game and shoots a good percentage from the line. He could become a jumbo version of Brook Lopez down the line.

    • Whom are the Lakers targeting in top five?
Have not worked out anybody that high.
Love to see Lakers go after Donovan Clingan.
AD would love to have him as front court mate.
Laker best option for future is two bigs lineup.

      • Donovan Clingan could still be there at 5. He would be the most logical target. I’m sure they saw plenty of film while researching Hurley.

        • Got me thinking, would the Lakers trade on of those future 1Sts and this years to move up for say Clingan? He would 25 in 2029 and not even in his prime. Wonder if they feel their target is ready to really contribute now. I

          • It looks very possible. Part of the logic is you’re getting the perfect second big to start next to Anthony Davis and a player who could have immediate impact as Davis’ backup center.

Frankly, I can see us drafting Edey at 17 to save the picks. Edey has an unknown floor and ceiling but he’s going to help any team’s PIP and FTM.

          • Rare to be able to get a #5 pick in any draft and for a position that could change everything. Clingan’s what you need down the road against these teams with bruising bigs.

    • Not sure what we would have to give away to move up in an admittedly very weak draft.

With the No. 17 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Lakers are hoping to select a player who can help them win now, taking advantage of the twilight of LeBron James‘ career. The latest mock draft from Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer points towards Indiana Sophomore center Kel’el Ware, who O’Connor says shows “shades of Myles Turner“.

The Lakers need a player who can compete for minutes right away, and if they’re going to succeed, that player will need to both defend in the paint and stretch the floor. Anthony Davis is a superstar at the center spot, making first-team All-Defense and second-team All-NBA, but they need a player who can both complement Davis on the court and provide solid minutes while he sits.

    Who is Kel’el Ware?

Ware is a two-time high school state champion, playing for North Little Rock High School in Arkansas. As a senior he put up gaudy averages of 20.3 points, 12 rebounds and 5.7 blocks, earning him an offer to play at the University of Oregon.

After playing just 15.8 minutes per game for the Oregon Ducks as a freshman, Ware moved to become the starting center for a Hoosier team that went a respectable 19-14 under coach Mike Woodson.

College numbers don’t always translate to NBA success, but the 6-foot-11 Ware did a solid job for Indiana in 2023-24, averaging 15.9 points, 9.9 rebounds and 1.9 blocks while shooting a robust 42.5% from the 3-point line (albeit on just 1.3 attempts per game).

A promising finish to the season elevated Ware’s draft stock, as he raised his averages to 19 points, 11.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocks over his last nine games of the season.

The Turner comparison feels more like wishful thinking as opposed to a legitimate possibility, as Turner was a much better shot blocker in his one college season (2.6 blocks per game) and has led the NBA twice in blocks per game.

How Would Kel’el Ware Fit on the Lakers?

The only certainties in life are death, taxes and LeBron recruiting 3-point shooters to help spread the floor. On offense, Ware could provide depth at both the center and power forward spot, providing a Rui Hachimura-like 3-point threat that Christian Wood cannot. Defensively, Ware could fill the paint with Davis on the bench, or alongside Davis, Ware and Davis could create a two-headed anchor that could rival any opposition.

One would hope LeBron and Davis could help Ware shake some of the negatives from his scouting report. O’Connor notes that “Effort and focus have wavered going back to high school. He’ll disappear for an entire half. His desire to box out and play with physicality is a notable concern, and he’s been bullied by players of a comparable size to him.”

A key decision that will affect the drafting of Ware is whether D’Angelo Russell decides to stay with the Lakers. If Russell stays, that soaks up $18.6 million of cap space, making it less likely the Lakers could scour the center-deficient free agent market to bring in a difference maker. Bobby Marks of ESPN.com pointed out that if Russell leaves, the Lakers would have access to their $12.9 million midlevel exception.

There have been plenty of talks about the Lakers packaging the No. 17 pick to either move up in the draft or trade for a veteran. Similar to the Turner comparison, it feels improbable given the lack of assets the Lakers currently have.
