It’s too early to write the Lakers off, of course. There’s always a chance they pull a rabbit out of a hat with a trade or signing. They have been active in recent days, discussing potential deals with Portland, Brooklyn and Utah, among other teams, according to league and team sources. Vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka tends to operate in the shadows — more so this summer than ever, according to league sources. It’s certainly possible he has a contingency plan that saves the offseason.
But the Lakers are running out of time. Free agents are flying off the board. Teams are making moves that will tie up their cap space and make it harder to trade. James wants to have his contract situation resolved by the start of the Team USA Olympics practice on Saturday in Las Vegas. That’s an unofficial deadline for Los Angeles, at least on the free-agency front.
It’s reaching the point where the Lakers need to do something — and sooner than later.

Best MLE option for Lakers has to be Miles Bridges. Only question is how much of the $12.9M will it take to land him. Still hoping Lakers avoid trading DLO for DDR. Lakers should seriously consider not trading DLO until trade deadline. Problem is who plays point if we trade him. https://t.co/I0AVMRQgYQ

The whole Lebron opening up the MLE thing gets more & more complicated everytime I hear or read something about it. It started out with him simply taking a little bit less than the MAX but now it’s ballooned to him having to take HALF the MAX and also the team STILL needing to shed additional salary to get there. Even the so-called “experts” seem to have trouble getting their minds totally wrapped around how these new CBA tiers & penalties actually work.

@MongoSlade. I am not sure if there is anybody out there who is more frustrated than I am. Every day I wake up I would be expecting some good news about what the Lakers are doing to improve the roster, but instead I am feeling like someone whose relative is in hospice care with no expectation of any good news. This lack of action is taking a toll on me mentally. I understand that we’re financially handicapped, but somebody got us in this mess to begin with. And there is no other person to point fingers to other than Rob the culprit. The worst part is nobody knows when these dark clouds hovering above us will dissipate. What a horrible feeling!
-
Folks like to make excuses for Rob (much like Broussard did in this clip) and I get it. Good looking, slick talking dudes of a certain persuasion often get a pass that others don’t (we’re gonna see it ALOT with JayJay The Basketball Messiah over the next few years). I didn’t expect many free agency moves from us simply because of our salary & roster construction right now. Lebron gave a ray of hope but as I said above…it’s turning out not to be as simple as it first seemed. But Rob put himself in that predicament! He’s not a victim of circumstance or some sort of unforeseen calamity; he did this sh!t on purpose! The thing we’re most desperately missing is a grown-up in the room and that’s the main difference between Dr Buss & Jeannie. He knew his own shortcomings and the value of hiring folks who knew more than he did. That’s a component of leadership that alotta folks in those positions never grasp.

You know Trae is a below average 3 point shooter? What is your mental patient like obsession with just chucking up 3’s? You’ve got to actually make them too, right? Between Lebron’s washed old age, AD’s injury history, and Trae’s lack of D, THIS IS THE WESTBROOK PART 2 SCENARIO! Demar for the MLE at least can get your 2nd unit a bucket now and again, something that was woefully lacking.

That is very true, Tom. All these players Lakers coveted are being snatched out of the free-agency just like families frantically grabbing every merchandise from store shelves before a hurricane. And it is happening so fast, almost at twice the speed of sound. That is why I am so frustrated with everything going on in the free agent market. Very tough to go through this kind of experience. We Lakers aficionados are going through hell right now.

Pelinka is never able to corral his minions to reach a consensus or willing to go all-in to make sure he wins.
To me, you find the people who will make a difference and you land them, even if you have to overpay because not getting the right people cost way more in long run.

Dr Buss loved stars and he was alive during a time when it was much easier to get. Now stars are very expensive, leaving big names that no longer play big. Jeanie has to understand this before the franchise is destroyed. Derozen can score but he can’t stretch the floor and he has become a defensive liability. Get over it while we still can.

This would be an unmitigated disaster. Maybe only that LaVine/Ball trade you posted earlier is worse.

Hi Jaime, I was looking at that stack of dollars in your fiver and I kept saying to myself – if I get that money I am going to build a very nice city around a beautiful lake in Hawaii and build a mansion for every Lakers fan on this blog. I will put a no-trespassing sign around the city to warn the other NBA teams against sneaking into our business. Just kidding!!
Thanks for all you do, Jamie.

Also, think about this: next summer we’ll see AD’s extension kick in and if LBJ takes the max those 2 will cost $113 million in cap space, alone. Now toss in Reaves, Vincent, Vando and Hachimura (or at least the salaries they represent as they could be traded for someone(s) else making about the same and you’re already at roughly $164-165 mil in cap space. That would mean just letting JHS and Lewis walk and we haven’t factored in Knecht or Bronny so that figure is higher (we won’t have to worry about a FRP next summer, we don’t have one yet). We’ll basically be capped out next summer, too.
So get used to this. Or don’t. it’s entirely up to you lol.
CAP SPACE-A-GO-GO the new game sweeping the nation and leaving hoops fans disappointed and disillusioned with their team’s inability to print money and sign everyone! New from Parker Bros.

Wow, Jamie! Your analysis is what I will call the brutal truth. Truth hurts a lot, and that’s why I am hurting right now. But it has to be said. What we Lakers fans are facing now is real, and there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. The Lakers’ financial situation is like a triple-double gone wrong.
Through a combination of inept management and incompetence, the Lakers found themselves juggling a hefty payroll with LeBron James and Anthony Davis alone gobbling up more than half of the team’s salary cap.
Yes, LeBron’s willing to sacrifice to increase the team’s chances to bring in a quality player, and LeBron’s willing to take a pay cut. But that’s like asking a superstar to play with a blindfold – noble, but not enough. His $51 million cap hit still looms large, but the man had worked hard throughout his career, and deserves every penny that comes his way. Even if the Lakers have a mid-level exception (say around $12 million), it’s like finding pocket change in a couch – not enough for a star player.
One can only hope players like Gary Trent Jr. or Derozan might join, but it’s like hoping for rain during a drought. The Lakers need more firepower, and that’s why being financially handicapped makes me feel sad as a fan.
I am sure many of us agree the 2023/24 season has been a rollercoaster – injuries, disgruntled players (though not overt), and missed trade opportunities. Most of these problems point to gross mismanagement, if not lack of vision. It is like watching your favorite player airball a clutch shot.
In short, the Lakers have been playing chess with checkers money. The question that keeps burning inside of me is: How can the Lakers improve their situation? Well it seems there will be no answer to this question anytime soon.
Let’s hope they make a big splash soon!

Klay basically did not want to play with arch-enemy LeBron James. Lakers offered more money and years. Fuck Klay. May have dodged a giant bullet w/his defense.
Lakers still have great options but it will have to be a miracle for Rob Pelinka to follow through with any of them. Instead, I expect the usual wait until the trade deadline bullshit. Fuck Rob.
-
Why is it “F*ck Klay”? If his goal is to win another ring then why on earth would he come here instead of Dallas (who just made a Finals run)?
-
-
Here’s an observation: by simply letting Klay and CP3 walk, while assuredly unpopular the Warriors just accelerated their rebuild timeline by 2-3 years. They have draft assets, Wiggins and change, they can trade for a decent player same as us and have one more pick to throw in. And, yes, pick swaps.

Lakers add Bulls 2026 unp pick to their 2029 and 2031 picks. Use LeBron discount to get below second tax apron.
If Lonzo can play next season, this c/b great option. Volume 3-point shooters in Zach (34.9% 6.8 3PA), Lonzo (42.3% 7.4 3PA), and Brook (36.6% 5.1 3PA).

Wow. Okay, first Lonzo. He has had 3 knee surgeries over the last year and one was an experimental miscus transplant. They don’t even know if it will work. The last update was he was hopeful that he could play at some point this year. Assuming he can play again, not a sure thing, what kind of player would he be. After 3 knee surgeries, would he be the same guy. Would he as mobile? Not the kind of risk I would take for a win now team. Then LaVine is an often injured shooter that doesn’t play defense and is owed 43 mil per for the next 3 years. DLO is better. 41% on 3’s with 7 attempts a game. And he plays the point. I may give up my Laker fan status if they made that trade.

Aloha,
Just heard that the Lakers were set to give Klay a 4 year 20 mil per deal but the Warriors would not do a sign and trade with DLO. Thank you Warriors.
Dr Buss liked stars, so Jeanie likes stars. But there is a difference between having a star resume and still being a star. If we are going to trade DLO we can do better than Klay. He isn’t that guy anymore.
-
Klay kinda made sense if he was coming here for the full MLE, but even that stretched the logic of what we actually need right now which is to get younger and better. This will likely not happen overnight, thus it’s not a fan-friendly timeline.
Trading for Klay never made sense to me. You’re just improving the Warriors at that point. Same goes for DeRozan which means he’s basically off the board, too.
-
I have never been on board the Klay and Christ Paul trains. So it is okay with me that they are gone somewhere else. My worry right now is the possibility of us watching from the sidelines white the talent pool is being entirely drained by the time this free-agency dust settles. One thing keeping me hopeful is that we were not that far off from the finals this past two seasons had it not been the mismatch Denver presented us. We just need a few effective tweaks to the roster without losing much in the process.

Aloha,
Well looks like Klay is going to the Mavs at 16 mil per for 3 years. The Mav’s had a trade exception to fit him into. Honestly, my heart isn’t broken. While he would have added value as a MLE signing, I wouldn’t waste trade assets on him. Good on Rob.
I actually don’t think Rob is doing anything wrong this summer. It’s just that we are in this mess for all the huge mistakes he has made in the past.
I’m to the point where I don’t know if I would spend our remaining trade assets on a marginal upgrade. It looks like Mitchell will resign with the Cav’s he is the kind of player you spend those picks on. He is a bonafide superstar. Say you trade for Jamari Grant from Portland. Yes he would be an upgrade over Rui but not a game changer.
If LeBron were smart he would take that pay cut and allow us to sign a couple decent role players with the MLE. An over the hill former star isn’t going to move the needle enough.
At this point, I wouldn’t mind standing pat with our core and hope guys like Austin and Rui continue to grow, maybe find a signing or two on the margins and save those picks for either a big fish or that rebuild that’s coming sooner than we would like.

I don’t see Derose helping. I would rather keep DLO and Reaves.
