The Los Angeles Lakers have widely been regarded as the most disappointing team of the NBA offseason.
Initially, L.A. came into the summer with high hopes. Klay Thompson, Dejounte Murray and DeMar DeRozan were just a few of the big names that the Lakers were linked to.
Unfortunately, none of those guys actually wound up with Los Angeles. Thompson went to the Dallas Mavericks. Murray was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. And DeRozan landed with the Sacramento Kings.
On Saturday word also came down that the Lauri Markkanen Trade Sweepstakes had dwindled to three teams – and the Lakers weren’t one of them.
Fortunately, less than 24 hours later, a reprieve came down. It appears as though L.A. is on the verge of a blockbuster trade with the Portland Trail Blazers centered around Jerami Grant.
“So much of the focus has been on Klay and the [Los Angeles] Clippers and always the Lakers,” ESPN’s Zach Lowe reported over the weekend. “Should we start printing the Jerami Grant-Lakers jerseys, by the way? Should we just do it now? … I might order one.”
Lowe has never been one for errant speculation. If he is saying something like this, it’s because he knows it is actually going down.
And in a lot of ways this move makes sense. The Lakers have been linked to Grant for some time. The only thing that has held up the trade from occurring up to this point is L.A.’s refusal to include one key piece in a potential deal.
It appears as though the Lakers’ position has now changed.
Will Grant be enough to push LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the Lakers back into title contention? Time will tell.

If the Lakers trade both picks for Jerami Grant, they must also get Robert Williams in the trade and keep D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves. Here's the trade that does that and opens up two roster spots for minimum salary players. https://t.co/1AWg3HVEDy pic.twitter.com/m0alVb66hJ

Classic click bait. A off the cuff remark turns into finalizing a blockbuster trade. One would think that at least someone from the LA media would pick up on it. Grant has a bad contract. When Dame left the speculation was that the Trailblazers would have to pay to get out of it. Grant brings a little better defense but he isn’t a better scorer than Rui and while Rui hasn’t been a great rebounder, he’s better the Grant. Grant doesn’t move the needle enough to justify the cost.
-
True, but nothing’s happening and it gives me a chance to push a trade I like. These are the kinds of deals that work. We offer a pick for Grant, Portland says they want two. We counter OK but then throw in Williams. They hash over the filler and any sweeteners and agree to a trade. Expanding trades is how we get more depth and diversity, how we swap more 1-ways for 2-ways. Of course, you have to be willing to give up the second pick. You know Rob would love to keep a pick for the deadline but with how LeBron and AD are playing, time to go all-in is now imo.

Grant is not going all in Tom. Do a little research. He is a decent player that’s way overpaid. We should get a first for taking him. He a pretty good defender but a poor rebounder. He averaged 21 on a bad team as the first option. How much offense will he brings as the 3rd. And Williams has bad knees. He played 62 games one year other than that he has hardly played. You have to give up either Rui or DLO and either Vando or Vincent and that’s just for Grant. When you look at return vs cost it’s not worth it. Better off trying to land someone like Carter Jr and keep the core.
-
While I am a big fan of Grant, I agree entirely with your take that he will not move the needle. Averaging 21 on a bad team as the first option, plus not a good rebounder, makes it a risky move. I am still holding on to my belief that the team needs to hold on to it as is till something meaningful comes up. Thanks, Michael.

Giving up both picks is a big price for Grant and Williams but worth it.
Grant can still play the 3 so Bron can play the 4 and he's shot 40% from deep on 5-6 threes per game last 2 years. He has some alpha in him.
Williams is elite low post defender to backup and pair with AD. https://t.co/6XXVYUqBYo

Hard to see Portland expanding the trade for one of their starters and the same 2 picks they’re asking just for Grant. Even if they did, I’d still just roll with Hayes. He’s 3 inches taller, doesn’t weigh much less, has more upside and stays healthier. Robert Williams has managed 60+ games in exactly one season he’s played in. That’s just me, though.

In the latest episode of “The Big Podcast with Shaq”, O’Neal stood up for Bronny James and urged the public to ease off the criticism. “I would like the scrutiny to get off Bronny James,” he said.
O’Neal continued, “He’s my nephew. He’s a boy. A great kid. All he wants to do is play. It’s unfortunate for the kids that have to live up to what we’ve done. I hope he gets a chance to play well. I hope he gets a chance to make a name for himself. I’m sitting watching all this criticism. All that stuff’s unnecessary.”

Reality begins to set in for the click bait crowd. Took ’em long enough…
Utah won’t be trading LM unless it’s for a “can’t refuse offer”. Unlikely the Lakers have one they can offer, if they even wanted to in the first place. Also it’s unlikely most teams see that as doing good business when they’d have to turn around and pay him a ton of money for what was essentially one good season. He could just as easily be the next BI where he does well enough on a bad team but either can’t stay on the floor or can’t win at the playoff level. Or both, since he hasn’t managed to get there on Utah.
Chicago “resigned” to starting the season with LaVine. So much for getting draft picks for taking him on? Honestly, Chicago might as well wait and try and rehab his value. They have this odd belief they’re on the cusp of contending. Which I don’t get at all.
Speaking of Mr. Ingram, BI likely to stay in NOLA. Again, not surprising. He took a step back and nobody is probably excited to offer him a multi year max contract and/or send NOLA the haul they likely feel entitled to for him in a trade. Might as well hold onto your picks and let the market dictate his value next summer.
Welcome to the new CBA, folks. Big contracts for under-performing players are the new albatross in ways we can only imagine to actual GMs. It’s funny when the league signs an incredibly profitable deal and the players probably won’t see the half of it in terms of salaries simply because they agreed to a max 10% cap growth every season. 15-20% probably would have made more sense.
Also, shout out to whomever owns TNT for suing the league when they rejected the match. Hard for Silver to arbitrate the oddity that is the Timberwolves not selling to the A-Rod group now since this is, basically, the same thing.
Gotta love the dog days man…

Oh, I almost forgot. Super awesome Laker “insider” Mr. Buha confirms that the Lakers have been shopping DLo with nary a taker in sight. Awesome. Like LaVine I’d cut that off at the knees, publicly declare the roster is fine as-is and sorry coach but we couldn’t lure Shaq out of retirement to be your bruising center and focus on February.
-
At least media day will be interesting. “Hey DLo, what’s your reaction to the Lakers shopping you all summer and nobody biting?” (DLo drops mic and walks away)

The good news Jamie is the Lakers have resisted going after the names that are out there. It’s funny, the Trailblazers were criticized for giving Jabari Grant that big 5 year contract. Then Dame leaves and that contract becomes even worse. There was speculation that the Blazers would have pay to get out of it. Enter the Lakers and they suddenly want 2 first picks along with the 3 contracts it would take. Two of those would be good players they could flip. In essence they want lakers to pay to get out of a crummy contract. Teams have been trying to screw what’s perceived as a desperate lakers team. Kudos to Rob for not doing something stupid like he did with Russ. It’s best to see what the team looks like after a couple of months.

I am not worried about the team. Once they figure out their chemistry, they will coast to the top. I am only worried about the lack of rest for AD and LeBron this coming season.
