    • 9-Man Rotation:

      PG: Reaves, Russell
      SG: Reddish, Knecht
      SF: James, Hachimura
      PF: Davis,
      CE: Koloko, Hayes

      • Only if you want to shift DLo from the mostly useless to completely useless category of player this team has, do you demote him. That stupid blonde hair of his was the first indication he had other things on his mind than winning basketball.

    • At this point, I would give Max Christie’s minutes to Reddish.

    5 Things: Frizzle Fried

The Lakers are a team forever on, at a minimum, low heat. Even the dudes who wipe the sweat off the court are under a microscope when you’re a part of the Lakers organization. So the heat will only get hotter for this team as they come home after a fairly disastrous road trip. All but gone are the good vibes from the 3-0 start and replacing them are injury concerns and mediocre effort from guys we expect more out of. The Lakers trudge home 4-4, 10th in the west, and with a lot more questions than answers.

    1. Laker defense blows. At 28th in the NBA with a 118.8 defensive rating the only way to describe the Lakers defense is dreadful. That’s a whole 4 points worse than we finished last season under Coach Ham. With the same team one would expect at least some form of continuity on that end but that doesn’t seem to be the case. We’re not getting back, we played physically for all of 3 games, and then just started letting the other team get into the paint and bully us on the glass. Our defensive rebounding has taken a 3.7% step back, as well. Whatever the coaches are trying to do isn’t working and I don’t think a trade or Vando coming back is enough. The team needs to either fix the physicality issue or change it’s coverage schemes because the blueprint to beat us is pretty simple: play fast. We’re in the bottom five for most measurable defensive metrics. That’s just not anywhere near good enough.
    2. The offense looks solid through 8 games and I expect it to improve slightly in efficiency. This isn’t the area where the lakers are struggling. Our offense is currently the 8th best. Continuity on this end hasn’t been a huge problem, we’re scoring smart and we’re scoring well. We just can’t get a stop anymore. The only area that could stand to get cleaned up a little are the turnovers where we’re probably trying to force things too much or short cut the play in favor of a riskier cross court pass.
    3. Leave Knecht on the bench. I knew as soon as I saw Rui out this would pave the way for a poor decision: starting Dalton Knecht. The dude is playing pretty well off the bench and has a nice role he’s already carved out. Give him the time to get better at that and start a guy like Cam to infuse the starting lineup with the correct kind of juice. Cam played really well in his minutes and happens to be playing for his NBA life. He was a spark plug for us last season and Coach Reddick has been pining for one of those energy guys while simultaneously ignoring the one he has that’s healthy and ready to play.
    4. Enough with this 9 man rotation. Both the coaches and the players need more time. You’re not doing yourself a single favor by essentially benching 1/5th of your roster so you can play who you think are the 9 best. You’re 4-4 with no clear path back to consistently winning, the first month of the regular season is glorified training camp where the games matter, this is still an apropos time to be discovering combinations that work and a rotation doesn’t have to be set in November. It needs to have an idea of what it is by 2025, it needs to be comfortable with one another by January and if it’s not working it needs to be changed as best it can via trade in February. Lastly, there are 4…maybe 5…total players who deserve to be in a 9 man rotation. The rest are role players so use this time now to figure out which ones augment those intelligent 2 man pairings based off LeBron/Reaves and AD/DLO.
    5. Letting the wrong players leave. Under Rob Pelinka, and numerous coaches, we’ve let the wrong players leave the organization far too often. I’m not talking about how we draft, although prior to Knecht that, too, left a lot to be desired, but rather what we do with the players we actually have and why we choose to let some of them walk for no reason. Alex Caruso left so we could keep THT who has almost bottomed out of the league while Caruso plays a meaningful role in OKC. Instead of Scottie Pippen Jr. we somehow still have Maxwell Lewis on the roster and after watching Scottie dissect us on defense it’s hard for me to understand why. The kid just plays hard and plays right. What does Lewis even do well in the G League? This disturbing trend has resulted in a severe talent drain of affordable players that a team like the Lakers can’t afford to keep getting wrong.

Got another one tomorrow on my birthday. Which seems to always get ruined by an election or a bad Lakers game. The shitty election already happened so here’s hoping at least the Lakers win against the injury ravaged 76ers… Yay 50.

    • Nice Post Jamie, I never am optimistic when AD is out. I knew defense would be a problem. What was weird was it really wasn’t the stars that killed us. It was Pippin as you mention, that rookie wells, I think he hit 5 3’s And Jay Huff, another South Bay Laker alum. I liked him then and he is more like the back up 5 we need now. But it boiled down to shooting, which I thought would be the case. We missed a ton of open 3’s. We were 15 for 48 while they were 17 for 34. That was basically the difference. Austin and Dlo were a combine 4 for 18 and Dalton was 1 for 7. This year reminds me of last year at the beginning of the season when we lost games because we couldn’t hit open shots. We have to be better. I agree on Cam, he has been a bright spot. He started well last year to before a series of injuries seemed to derail his game. Hopefully he stays healthy. By the way my birthday is Saturday. We are almost birthday bro’s.😊

      • Me either, and it was nice to see Koloko get some run. Looks rusty but that’s expected.

What’s concerning, if not all that surprising given that we ran it back, is that we’re losing games the same way we did last season. Which means, in a lot of ways, it ain’t the coach but the personnel that’s the true issue. I think that we’re seeing that play out now.

Rebounding continues to be the Achilles Heel and you can add in transition defense and a lack of paint protection now, too. Part of it is a lack of talented size, some of it is we need a 40 year old on the floor to score enough points to win, and some of it is either a bad scheme or the players not fully executing the scheme (my personal jury is still out and waiting 20 or so games on that one).

The step forward we all hoped/needed one of Reaves/DLO/Hachimura or Christie to take hasn’t really materialized, at least not anything consistent. That’s not a knock on anyone but rathe the sobering reality of a team that had it’s two best players on the floor for the majority of the games last season and ended up in the Playin all the same. That indicates someone other than AD or LeBron needs to become a bigger factor.

        • Last year our starting unit was 21-8 down the stretch with a 110 defensive rating. The biggest difference is we were shooting a great percentage and not turning the ball over much. That has killed our transition defense. We also had Prince and Dinnwedie coming of the bench in stead of Christie and Dalton. Both were good defenders and Prince was shooting the 3 like we hoped Dalton would. I really do think we will be better when Vando and Wood come back. After that Dalton or Christie really have improve.

      • It’s quite a coincidence that Jamie and Michael are almost birthday bros. Tom’s birthday is exactly one month away – December 7th. I am going to wish you both great birthdays filled with serenity.

    • Wow, great post, Jamie!
Regarding your point about Dalton and the need to start Cam for some much-needed energy in the lineup, I absolutely agree! Cam has shown his value on the court, especially since he’s playing for his NBA life. He really was a spark plug for us last season, and it feels like Coach Reddick is overlooking this healthy, energetic guy in favor of others. You’re spot on about Cam. In fact, he is the only player with a positive +/- in the last two games.
The last five games highlight our current struggle: the lack of a strong bench. Remember when we prided ourselves on the depth of our roster? We called them the “bench mob” for a reason!
Just the other day, I expressed my frustration over not keeping Jay Huff and Scotie Pippen Jr. Why in the world are we hanging on to Maxwell Lewis and JHS? It feels like we’re gifting talent to the Grizzlies, who are now proving us wrong with those players. Collin Castleton has just been added to that list after moving from the Lakers. This early in the season, I really don’t think we should be locked into that 9-man rotation you mentioned. We need to rethink our strategy! Great post; keep the conversation going!

Cam Reddish and Christian Koloko Could Help Lakers’ Defensive Woes

Max Christie’s poor play and Anthony Davis’ injury may have opened the door for Lakers’ rookie head coach JJ Redick to make a pair of quick and dramatic changes to upgrade the defensive play of his 9-man rotation.

Coach Redick started the process of upgrading the defense of his 9-man rotation by inserting Cam Reddish to replace Max Christie, who started both season and game poorly after a new contract and raise offseason.
While L.A. still lost the game to Detroit, Reddish was the only Laker with a positive plus/minus and likely stole Christie’s backup shooting guard role and possibly re-opened a long shot opportunity to win a starting spot.

With Anthony Davis questionable due to a heel injury, it appears the Lakers are accelerating Christian Koloko’s opportunity to earn a rotation role as they’ve made him active for tonight’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies.
While Christian has not played in over a year, tonight will be his Lakers’ debut and it could not have come at a better time. After a great start, L.A.’s struggling and desperately in need of an injection of size and defense.

While replacing Christie and Hayes with Reddish and Koloko will help the Lakers defensively, there are still other key rotation moves to consider, including what to do about the situation with center Jaxson Hayes.
There’s also the dilemma of what to do about the D’Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves backcourt, which may work for the regular season but is likely to be an albatross for the Lakers once the NBA playoffs begin.

Gabe Vincent is still struggling mightily and Redick has already shown he’s not going to sit around and wait for players to start playing well. His move to replace Christie showed he’s not going to hesitate if changes are needed.
The Lakers may also have a quality replacement option for Gabe Vincent in Quincy Olivari. Considering how quickly Redick was in replacing Christie, Gabe Vincent should realize his rotation role is on the line right now.

Lakers ownership and front office needs to realize this Lakers roster is one of two quality rotation players from becoming a legitimate championship contender this season. Time to invest in Anthony Davis and LeBron James.

    • Frankly, I was surprised and pleased that JJ Redick pulled the plug on Max Christie after just 7 games. I’m also thrilled to see Christian Koloko getting a chance to play, even if it required AD to get injured. At any rate, he could leapfrog Vando and/or Wood in the rotation. Don’t know what to expect but we need more size.

    • Could also see Russell as point guard off bench and Reddish starting to give starters more defensive matchup. I’ve also always been a fan of Vando at the two since that is what he guards and it gives him a huge size advantage over other twos.

Laker Nation watched in horror as Anthony Davis went down with an apparent ankle injury during last night’s game. Yes, he was able to stay on the floor until the final whistle. But it was evident from him hobbling up and down the court while grimacing in pain that he was hurt. Sure enough, no one wants to see the LA side’s key starter miss games, especially after the dominant start he has had to the season. But if it comes to that, JJ Redick might turn to his 24-year-old big man for help, who is set to return from over a year-long hiatus.

We are talking about Christian Koloko. Well, Rob Pelinka signed him in September on a two-way contract. However, he has not played an NBA game since last April. The hooper was forced to take a year off because of respiratory illness and blood clots. But the latest update via @LADEig on X reveals, “Christian Koloko is with the team and will be listed as active tomorrow.”

Fortunately, the NBA’s Fitness-to-Play panel cleared him to play last week. Well, JJ Redick revealed after the 7’1 Center got clearance that he would begin his play process with the South Bay Lakers, the G League affiliate. But things could change, now that the team is dealing with AD’s injury. Following last night’s game, Davis has been listed as questionable for the upcoming Memphis encounter due to a left heel contusion. And the Lakers are in desperate need of size.

So, it is very likely that Koloko directly gets the call up to the main roster to serve as a backup Center for the Purple and Gold.

How can Christian Koloko help the Lakers solve their size problem?

Obviously, Koloko is nowhere close to being a superstar of AD’s caliber. And the latter has had a monster start to this season, averaging a league-high 32.6 points. But he revealed yesterday that he’s been managing a lingering ankle issue since this summer. And the Lakers could certainly use a backup player like Koloko to take some load off him.

While Christian has not played in over a year, he had a decent start to his career in Toronto. During his rookie year, he averaged 3.1 points and nearly 3 rebounds in limited minutes. And his ability to protect the paint surely caught everyone’s attention as he averaged one block per game. Even during his junior year in college, the hooper averaged an impressive 2.8 blocks.

Koloko could play a similar role for the LA Lakers and be a constant defensive presence inside the paint. Sure enough, it will allow their offense to run more smoothly, knowing that they have a reliable big man inside. And JJ would not have to worry about overexerting Anthony Davis on both ends of the floor.

    • With AD hobbled by his heel, this is great news. Our lack of size has been a killer. Koloko should be able to replace Hayes and Reddish will likely replace Max. Problem is still bench scoring.

It would be great if Koloko was good enough to replace Rui in the starting lineup and still backup AD when he goes to the bench. Rui’s offense could be the punch the bench needs.

I’d also like to see Olivari get a shot at some bench minutes. Lakers should consider giving him a shot at Gabe’s minutes. At any rate, replacing Max and Jax with Cam and Chris is a good start. Let’s hope AD’s heel feels better tomorrow.

      • Obviously need to see if Koloko can replace Hayes in rotation as well as if Reddish can replace Christie. I’d like to see Olivari get a shot at replacing Gabe. Lots of ‘ifs’ but this could be our best without-a-trade 9-man rotation offensively and defensively.

        PG: Reaves, Olivari
        SG: Russell, Reddish
        SF: James, Hachimura
        PF: Davis, Wood
        CE: Koloko

How Davis/Russell & James/Reaves Pairings Upgrade Lakers’ Rotation

Besides starting and closing with last year’s conference finals lineup, JJ Redick is also pairing Anthony Davis with D’Angelo Russell and LeBron James with Austin Reaves for the Lakers’ middle-of-game rotations.

Strategically, JJ is making the move for several reasons. First, he wants to take better advantage of the elite pick-and-roll chemistry D’Angelo Russell already has with Anthony Davis and Austin Reaves with LeBron James.
Secondly, he wants to make sure every lineup used will both be balanced and competitive. That means making sure the offense and defense balance of every lineup is sound and that lineup has the 2-way talent to compete.

One of JJ Redick’s strengths as a head coach has been his work ethic and attention to detail. Unlike Darvin Ham, Redick has a vision for the players he wants on the Lakers squad and how he wants them to play basketball.
JJ’s other strength has been his ability to make quick decisions, which is what he did with both the starting lineup and with this recent decision to pair Davis with Russell and James with Reaves for team’s middle lineups.

With a roster that brings back most of the players from last year’s team that made it to the Western Conference finals, the Lakers have an opportunity for the first time since signing LeBron to build chemistry and continuity.
JJ Redick has a chance to do in his first 5 games what it took Darvin Ham almost half a season to do, which is figure out who should be starting and closing games and who should be part of the team’s new 9-man rotation.

So let’s take a closer look at JJ Redick’s plan to create balanced and competitive middle-game lineups by pairing Davis/Russell and James/Reaves with complementary combinations of bench players.

    LAKERS 9-MAN ROTATION

The above chart displays a sample 9-man rotation utilizing only players who are currently on the Lakers’ roster and able to play. Christie, Vincent, and Hayes are likely to be replaced in the rotation at some point in time.

This Lakers rotation includes 8 different 5-man lineups. 4 of the 5-man lineups consist of starters Reaves, Russell, Hachimura, James, and Davis, who will start and close both the first and second halves of each game.
The other 4 lineups will be 5-man mixes of starters and reserves led by Davis/Russell or James/Reaves who will follow the starters and precede the closers and fill out the middle of the first and second halves of the game.

Redick’s new move ensures that the Lakers will always have one of their two superstar bigs in Anthony Davis and LeBron James and one of their two playmaking guards in D’Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves on the court.
By establishing two complementary middle-of-game lineups anchored by a superstar big and playmaking guard, Redick simply established a scheme by which the Lakers would always have balanced, competitive lineups.

The new scheme not only optimizes the Lakers best two pick-and-roll duos but also maximizes time on the court by the team’s five starters while minimizing it for the four reserves included in the Lakers’ 9-man rotation. One of Darvin Ham’s biggest shortcoming as a head coach was how long it took him to decide on the starting lineup that made the conference finals and how often his midgame lineups were not balanced or competitive.

Once Vanderbilt, Wood, and Koloko have recovered from their injuries, there’s a good chance they, or other players for whom the Lakers trade, will eventually replace Christie, Vincent, and Hayes in the 9-man rotation.

    STARTER/BENCH MINUTES

JJ’s new rotation also assures that the Lakers always have two starters in every lineup and 180 or 75% of the 240 minutes per game will be played by Lakers’ starters and only 60 minutes per game or 25% by bench players.

The Lakers have a bench scoring problem. They currently have the league’s best starting lineup, averaging a stunning 98.0 points per game and the league’s worst bench lineup, averaging a league worst 20.1 points per game.
So far, all five of the Lakers’ starters are averaging double figures and the team has won 4 of their first 6 games and are facing a November schedule that is much less challenging and offers an opportunity to rack up wins.

While it’s still early in the season, Redick is not likely to have too much patience with Christie, Vincent, and Hayes. Christie and Vincent have been terrible and Hayes is possibly facing a domestic violence suspension.
Hopefully, the Lakers will get Vanderbilt, Wood, and Koloko back from injury or trade for more talent to upgrade their bench to replace Christie, Vincent, and Hayes with players who play better offense and defense.

Ultimately, the Lakers are going to have to make a decision on the Reaves and Russell backcourt, which realistically is not good enough defensively to be a championship backcourt. Most likely decision is to trade Russell.
The other starting lineup change the Lakers may consider is moving Rui Hachimura to the bench to boost scoring and replacing him with a second big on the roster like Koloko or making a trade for a big like Walker Kessler.

The Lakers need to optimize minutes for their starters and minimize minutes for their bench until they get players back from injury or from a trade that will enable them to upgrade their bench offense and defense.

    LAKERS’ NEXT 30 DAYS

Last season, the Lakers finished their first 20 games of the season with an 11–9 record. Right now, the Lakers are 4–2. Over the next 30 days, they will play a dramatically easier schedule with 14 mostly winnable games.

The toughest games will be those against OKC and San Antonio and two games against Memphis. Other than those games, the Lakers should have a realistic opportunity to go 9–5, 10–4, or 11–3 over the 14-game schedule.
At best, the Lakers current team could enter December as a top-2 team in the West with a 15–5 record. At worst, they could enter December as a top-6 team in the West with a 12–8 record, slightly better than last season.

One thing that seems clear is that this year’s Lakers team is dramatically better despite essentially being the same as last year’s team. The difference, of course, has been the terrific job done by rookie head coach JJ Redick.
Redick has been a revelation who’s taken the Lakers by storm with the strength of his personality. The players have embraced his approach and vision and there’s no doubt the front office will be forced to make moves.

Ideally, the Los Angeles Lakers need a new starting point guard who’s an aggressive point-of-attack defender and a new starting center who can protect the rim and start alongside Anthony Davis in a two-bigs lineup.
The Lakers will have to look to a trade or free agency to get a new point guard but there’s a chance that Christian Wood or Christian Koloko could work out as the second big to start next to and complement Anthony Davis.

JJ Redick has shown in just 6 games that this Lakers team is just one player or two away from being a legitimate championship contender. Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka will have no choice but to be forced to make a big trade.
