It’s fascinating to watch the two leading candidates for the Lakers head coaching gig having a conversation with each other right after Danny won his second NCAA championship. Lakers will be lucky to get either guy.
Hurley and Murray could be the safer bet but college coaches can have difficulty with professional players. There’s a reason why most of the college to pro coaches have not succeeded. Coaching rich men is different from coaching kids. And leaving college because of NIL and transfer portal for the NBA would be like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Finally, there’s always the refuge of going back to college. Hurley is a driven man for sure. But he would have a safety net and I think not have played or coached in the league could be tough.
While he hasn’t coached at any level, JJ has played for elite coaches at every level and is smart and fortunate enought to have learned from them what works and what doesn’t, what matters and what doesn’t. He’s maniacally organized and knows the pro game as a player and coach, which is something Hurley cannot say. JJ may have an easier transition as a rookie head coach than Danny. I’m just glad we’re down to two elite candidates that I will be excited to support. Momentous times for LAL.

And it looks like at least one of them will end up being paid by the Lakers to not work sometime soon.
