Thanks for your candidness. As far as life goes, we are once a man and twice a child. You are born a child and become a man at a later stage. But once you get very old you become a child all over again, and you would have to be taken care of again just like a child.
I can see why some people don’t want to live to be very old. You would simply feel like enough is enough. But the main factor could be losing your ability to do things that you like to do without help.
The desire not to live longer applies to both rich and poor.
On one hand, why would a rich man choose to end his life when he has it all?
It is because material things can never satisfy a human soul. People who aren’t rich (which is most people) are more likely to believe in the delusion that if they just got the material things they wanted, they would be satisfied. But when the rich people got it, they realized they still lacked something. People still keep craving something, not knowing what can truly satisfy them. It’s because nothing in this world can satisfy a human soul.
On the other hand, poor people still chase after their dreams of financial success or whatever it is – it keeps them going, thinking it’ll make them happy. But when you’e rich and have almost everything materialistic, you realize it’s not enough. To poor people, they still love money and all that this world can offer them because they’ve never experienced it. But to the rich, it all gets boring and dreary. Everything on earth seems dull.
So, these are some of the reasons why some people prefer not to live longer.
Great points, Buba. I will be 78 years old this December. My wife will be 75 later this year. We’ve been married for over 50 years and have 1 son and 1 grandson and 2 granddaughters.
I been lucky enough and dumb enough to have made and lost a lot of money during my life chasing one dream or another. In the end, you finally realize that all that counts are the kind of person you became and the family and friends you have.
My father lived to 101 so the questions you raised are paramount in my life. I’ve dedicated myself to making sure my wife and I enjoy every day we have left. Took my a lifetime to learn how to love someone and I intend to enjoy every single day we have left.
Have a great day, Buba. Looking forward to your visiting San Francisco someday so we can meet in person.
Hi, Tom.
Thank you so much for such a great response. It was well written and full of meaning. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I would like to take a moment to congratulate you and your wife on the Golden Jubilee of your marriage. That is a rare feat. I would also like to congratulate you both on your Diamond Jubilees for your birthdays. Too bad you and Larry Bird have the same birthday. You got my drift? lol! I wish you and your wife many more years filled with happiness.

As late as I had mine, chances are slim I make it.

We just have to pray for longevity. Nothing is impossible in life.

Well I don’t think I’m making it to 98, and tbh, not really sure I’d want to.
